A 9th grade student at Buffalo’s International Preparatory School in New York says she was forced to remove her hijab by an assistant principal.“He was like, ‘Take that thing off your head, you’re not Muslim or Arabian.’” That’s what Najah Travis claims assistant principal Marin Lyonga told her after pulling her to the side on Monday. She refused, and called her mother. When Luvita Franklin arrived she said she was speaking with a second assistant principal, Patrick Doyle, who told her it’s district policy to provide proof of practicing the Muslim faith to wear a hijab. In a recording of the conversation played by Franklin for our cameras Doyle can be heard saying “It is a district policy.” When Franklin asked whether it was new he replied, “It’s not new.”We send a transcript to representative from the school district. Buffalo Schools chief of staff Darren Brown says it is not a policy for the district that students are required to provide proof of religion. He says administrators are always free to inquire more about students’ religions and ask questions to understand more. After investigating this incident, Brown says the assistant principals asked to see proof of religion because they were familiar with Travis from a number of interactions, but had never seen Travis in a hijab before.Brown says administrators were worried about it being seen as offensive to other students, and wanted to ensure the hijab was not being worn as a fashion statement.“It wouldn’t matter if it was the first or the 5th time you’ve seen her wearing it, once she put it on her head, it shouldn’t have mattered,” said Franklin. In the recording with Doyle, he can be heard saying, “All she needs to do is bring a note saying she’s a part of the religion from somebody that’s a member of the (indistinguishable)…as long as that’s done, at that point she can wear it as much as she wants. Nobody will ever stop her. We fully support all religions.”Imam Pasha Syed at Jami Masjid says hijabs are not exclusive to the Muslim faith. Anyone, at any time can wear one. He also says even Muslims don’t wear hijabs daily.“It takes time. It doesn’t happen from day one. Some people may have to grow into it. Sometimes it takes years.”Brown said that Buffalo Public Schools prides itself on inclusion and dignity for all students. The district has looked into this incident and continues to investigate to determine whether it was handled appropriately by all parties involved. Research shows the number of mass shootings has created an increased level of anxiety for a growing number of people. That’s the case for Mila Johns, who doesn’t leave her Maryland home as much as she used to. Johns feels defenseless and gripped by fear that she could become the next victim of a mass shooting. “I've changed my day-to-day routine,” she says. “I don't go to the movies. When we go out, I know where the exits are. I sit with my back to the wall. Sometimes it's easier to just not deal with it and stay home.” When she does go out, Johns went as far as buying a trauma pack—which includes trauma pads, sterile gloves, duct tape, bandages, dressing and antiseptic—to take with her. Johns’ 13-year-old daughter also carries on her backpack when she goes to school. “Sadly, that's where she's most likely to have to use it, it feels” Johns says. “And that's just heartbreaking.” Johns knows some people may feel she's overreacting, but she points out that research shows the amount of mass shootings in the U.S. this year has outpaced the number of days. That's according to Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group. It qualifies mass shootings as four or more people shot or killed, excluding the shooter. As of now, 2019 is on track to average more than one mass shooting a day.“We're at, I think on Sunday it was 251 mass shootings on the 216th day of the year,” Johns says. “It just feels inevitable.” Daniel Z. Lieberman, a professor of psychiatry at George Washington University, says although mass shootings are happening more frequently, it’s still very rare.“The risk of being killed in a mass shooting is about 1 in 100,000,” he explains. “Compare that to the risk dying from cancer, which is 1 in 7; dying in an automobile, that's about 1 in 100, so rationally, it just doesn't make sense to worry about that.” He says it's normal to have some anxiety after a tragedy, but he says people can get caught up with the idea of being in danger rather than the reality. “Anxiety is not a rational experience. It's an emotion,” he says. “And emotions often don't respond to facts, and particularly statistics, which tend to be very dry.”For Johns, she says she would be more comforted by action instead of numbers. “Statistics aren't helping anybody feel better when we are living in a culture where this just keeps happening and there's no desire or willingness to change,” she says. 2424

(CNN) — Five elephants and a 3-year-old calf died at a waterfall in Thailand during what authorities believe was an attempt by the adults to save the young one.The incident happened Saturday at the Haew Narok waterfall at the Khao Yai National Park. Two surviving elephants were trapped at the waterfall for hours before national park officials saved them, and fed them pineapples, bananas and sugar cane covered in supplements.Authorities were notified that elephants were crying out from the waterfall and when they arrived, they discovered the body of the calf, said Khanchit Srinoppawan, chief of the Khao Yai National Park. The five dead adult elephants were found in another part of the waterfall. The waterfall is closed to the public following the incident. 775
