AstraZeneca is the latest drugmaker to announce promising Phase 3 trial results from its COVID-19 vaccine candidate. On Monday, AstraZeneca said its two-shot vaccine candidate has been 90% effective thus far along with no safety concerns.“These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives," said Professor Andrew Pollard, the chief executive of the study. Excitingly, we’ve found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90% effective and if this dosing regime is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply. Today’s announcement is only possible thanks to the many volunteers in our trial, and the hard working and talented team of researchers based around the world.”The company added in its press release that its vaccine candidate offers two distinct advantages over vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna — it's cheaper to produce, and does not need to be stored in ultra-cold conditions before use.AstraZeneca added that the company would "immediately" prepare regulatory paperwork to seek Emergency Use Listing status from the World Health Organization.AstraZeneca is just the latest drug company to report encouraging results from its COVID-19 vaccine candidate.Last week, Pfizer said it had submitted Emergency Use Authorization paperwork to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) after a final analysis of its vaccine candidate proved to be 95% effective in preventing COVID-19. The FDA is expected to approve the drug in the coming weeks.Moderna has also said that early results show its vaccine candidate to be 95% effective, and is on track to have the drug approved for Emergency Use Authorization by the end of the year.AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna are all shattering records for vaccine development. The three vaccines are all on track to be approved for widespread use in uder a year. Typically, it takes several years for a vaccine to go from development to approval. The announcement comes as COVID-19 is spreading around the world at a rate not previously seen since the pandemic began. And while all three companies are pre-producing their vaccines in the hope that it will be approved, health experts warn that they won't be widely available until spring 2021. 2247

Authorities are using the recent arrest of a registered sex offender as a reminder for parents to monitor their children’s candy this Halloween season.Detectives with the Santa Barbara County Special Investigations Bureau and the Cannabis Compliance Team pulled over a driver Wednesday afternoon in Santa Maria, California. The driver was identified as Christian Sandez of Santa Maria. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office says inside his van they found “a large amount of packaged cannabis infused candy, processed cannabis flower, concentrated cannabis and cannabis vape products, which he possessed for the purpose of sales.”The 28-year-old, who is on active parole, does not have a California Bureau of Cannabis Control retail or sales license, according to the sheriff’s office.Sandez was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana, which is a felony, and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail where he is being held without bail for violating his parole, the sheriff’s office says. The sheriff’s office says cannabis-infused products “are intentionally packaged to resemble normal candy and can easily be mistaken” and they are encouraging parents to monitor their children’s candy, especially around Halloween. This story originally reported on KSBY.com. 1282

As the debate rages nationwide over what to do over a plethora of Confederate monuments, new concern is mounting over a Confederate rally planned for Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday. At the center of the debate is Richmond’s “Monument Avenue,” a collection of statues of Confederate leaders in the former Confederate capital. Back in May, the city’s mayor Levar Stoney said that while he personally believes the monuments are an “endorsement of a shameful past,” he didn’t believe there should be a rush to remove them. He had hoped for a dialogue to take place, and even floated the idea of adding plaques to the statues for more accurate historical context."I think we have an opportunity here in the city to actually be a hub for reconciliation."He created the “Monument Avenue Commission” and even solicited public input in the form of open public meetings. Richmond residents were not shy voicing their opinions.Rita Willis, a former teacher, attended the Aug. 9 public forum to say they are a part of Virginia’s history, whether some like it or not. However she emphasized that if they stay, other statues should be erected that highlight people of other races and ethnicities.George Knight, on the other hand, stood in the auditorium and gave city officials a tongue lashing.“Now is the time to finally get rid of the monuments and replace them with people who actually fought for freedom who actually stood for justice,” Knight said, his voice raising as officials urged him to keep calm. “You lost! Get over it already! Get rid of your participation trophies on monument avenue, get rid of it.”He was met with a spattering of boos as well as cheers. But some attitudes regarding the statues changed following the white nationalist rally last month in Charlottesville, Virginia, which culminated in counter-protestor Heather Heyer losing her life. Stoney is one who’s taken a slightly different position since Charlottesville and believes that perhaps they should now consider taking them down. He wrote in a statement that it had become clear that the statues were being used as a “rallying point for division and intolerance and violence.”The group rallying support around the Robert E. Lee statue on Saturday is a relatively small group out of Tennessee known as “CSA II: The New Confederate States of America.” The group’s president said they were “standing up for their proud heritage” in a nonviolent manner and that any white nationalists or racists who show up to rally with them will not be accepted. He said his message to Richmonders on edge regarding the weekend’s rally is simple: “We are here for peaceful purposes only.”“We will not stand for any violence in Richmond, Virginia.”But the city says they are taking protective measures to be safe. The mayor and police chief announced this week that any objects that can be used as weapons will be prohibited. One type of weapon that won’t be prohibited, however, are guns, as Virginia is an open-carry state.“If you do not respect our city,” Stoney warned, “law enforcement will lock you up."  3084
