The National Park Service on Thursday unveiled a new plan to hike entrance fees at national parks with more modest increases than the ones it proposed last fall. The proposal calls for raising fees at many national parks?by around in the next year, with some seeing an additional increase in 2020. The new plan will apply to the 117 national parks that charge fees, not to the two-thirds of national parks that do not have entrance fees, the agency says. The entrance fee for the Grand Canyon, the nation's most popular park that charges an entrance fee, will climb by to per vehicle starting June 1. An annual pass for the Grand Canyon will climb by to , according to the park service numbers. The original proposal, unveiled in October, called for more than doubling peak-season admission at 17 popular parks to . The response to that plan was highly negative, the Interior Department told The Washington Post earlier this month.Increasing entrance fees will help the park service address a nearly billion backlog of maintenance projects, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has said.Zinke said the new plan is more "balanced" and will raise about million in additional revenue per year. The National Parks Conservation Association, a nonprofit group that opposed the original proposal, said Thursday that the "more measured fee increases will put additional funds into enhancing park experiences without threatening visitation or local economies."Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico, the top Democrat on a committee that oversees federal funding for the National Park Service, said he was not convinced the increase was justified and that he would be asking the department for "a much more detailed explanation" of its rationale. 1770

The new romaine lettuce recall is causing many to change up their Thanksgiving Day menus.A popular vegan restaurant and catering company, Pianta, is one place affected by the recall.“We use romaine every day,” says restaurant owner Michael Moon. “We use about two to three cases of romaine every week, so it's pretty significant.”The restaurant has thrown out all of its romaine lettuce.“Essentially, we're just throwing away money,” Moon says. However, Pianta’s owner says it’s only a small cost to pay for the safety of his customers.“We don't want to be associated with some sort of outbreak here as a plant-based restaurant. It's scary.”Until further notice, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning everyone to throw out any and all romaine lettuce. That includes prewashed bag lettuce, as well as any other foods stored with it or touching it.Health officials also to clean out your refrigerator and counter.Moon says the recall is scary, because this is just the latest recall impacting his vegan, plant-based restaurant.“We've seen this with spinach; we've seen it with romaine; we've seen it with kale,” Moon says. “So, for someone like us, it's sort of the bedrock of what we're doing here, so it's obviously a big concern. The CDC is trying to find the source of the E. coli outbreak, which so far has sent dozens of people to the hospital, both in the United States and Canada. 1418

The NBA’s player representatives have voted to support the notion of starting this coming season on Dec. 22, the date that the league has been targeting in its talks about how and when to get teams back on the floor for a planned 72-game season. The player vote is just one part of the process. Among the primary matters to be determined: how much more escrow will be taken from players because of the shorter-than-usual season, and how the league and the players will navigate testing and other health and safety issues amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The 2019-20 season ended more than three months later than normal because of the coronavirus."The Board of Player Representatives of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) has tentatively approved a start date of December 22, 2020 for the 2020-2021 NBA season and a 72-game schedule. Additional details remain to be negotiated and the NBPA is confident that the parties will reach agreement on these remaining issues relevant to the upcoming season," the NBPA said in a statement. 1059

The Human Rights Campaign on Sunday called for the Trump administration not to go forward with a rollback of protections for transgender people, following a report in The New York Times on a draft proposal."Setting a destructive precedent, the Trump-Pence administration intends to erase LGBTQ people from federal civil rights protections and eviscerate enforcement of non-discrimination laws," the group's president, Chad Griffin, said in a statement.HRC is among the nation's most prominent LGBTQ rights groups, and its statement Sunday called on Congress to pass legislation enshrining protections it says are at threat should the Trump administration go forward with the reported plan. The Times report said the Department of Health and Human Services is working to define sex under Title IX as solely male or female at birth, with no room for change. The proposal could formally be presented to the Justice Department by the end of the year, sources told the Times."Sex means a person's status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth," the proposal says, according to The Times. 1137
