MADRID, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Spain will vigorously boost the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain, and turn a new chapter of bilateral trade and economic cooperation, a Chinese official said here on Wednesday.Gao Hucheng, China's international trade representative and vice minister of commerce, told reporters in Madrid that Li's ongoing Europe tour is the first foreign trip by Chinese leaders in 2011 and the choice of Spain as the first leg demonstrates the importance that China has attached to its ties with Spain and its strong will to promote cooperation with Spain.Li arrived here Tuesday for a three-day official visit to Spain. He will later visit Germany and Britain in his three-nation Europe tour.Gao hailed the ever closer trade relations between China and Spain, their increasing two-way investments and new progress in their cooperation in major projects such as in the energy field.Gao said both sides have been deepening cooperation in some traditional areas like finance and telecommunication, and making new achievements in new energy and brand cooperation.During Li's visit to Spain, the two sides signed a series of agreements on economic and trade cooperation in the financial, petroleum and chemical, renewable energy, nuclear power equipment and food sectors, he said, adding that the deals are worth 7.5 billion U.S. dollars.Vice Premier Li, whose entourage included more than 80 entreprenurs, Wednesday delivered a speech at a breakfast attended by Chinese and Spanish entreprenurs.The address augmented the confidence of the two countries' enterprises in bilateral cooperation in coping with the global financial crisis, and the expansion of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, Gao said.As a long-term strategic partner of the European Union (EU), China supports the measures Spain and other EU countries have taken to stabilize its economy and financial markets, and it has confidence in Spain's and the EU's financial markets, he said.After the outbreak of the sovereign debt crisis in Europe, Gao said, China has kept buying national bonds of Spain and other EU nations, helping EU countries weather the crisis with concrete efforts.Gao expressed his belief that with concerted efforts by the EU and the international community, Spain and other EU nations will eventually tide over the crisis and achieve full economic recovery.

BANGKOK, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese military will adopt a more open and cooperative attitude when developing friendly ties with Thailand's armed forces, a senior Chinese defense official said Monday.Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army of China, made the pledge at the 9th Defence and Security Consultations between the Chinese and Thai Defence Ministries.Complex and profound changes are taking place in regional situations, said Ma. It is the responsibility of governments and armed forces in the region to enhance international cooperation, jointly cope with challenges, safeguard regional peace and stability to create favorable security conditions for common development, Ma said.The Chinese military is willing to boost in-depth, wide-ranging and all-dimensional ties with Thailand, building upon past achievements, Ma said.General Kittipong Keskowit, permanent secretary for defence of Thailand, hailed the long-lasting friendly cooperation between Thailand and China.He also expressed Thailand's willingness to continue carrying out close military exchanges and cooperation with China so as to contribute to the eternal friendship between the two countries and to the peace and stability of the region.During the event, Ma, on behalf of the Chinese military, donated 20 transport speedboats to Thailand to support its fight against the current floods.Ma arrived in Thailand on Saturday for a three-day visit at the invitation of the Thai Defence Ministry.

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopian Minister of Finance and Economic Development Sufian Ahmed and a Chinese delegation led by Liu Liange, deputy president of Export-Import Bank of China (China Eximbank), on Monday discussed projects financed by the EximBank here in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.The two sides exchanged ideas on ways of enhancing cooperation in infrastructure development and other sectors. Speaking at the discussion, Sufian said the two countries have been enjoying good relations in all sectors.He said China has forged good relations with the African continent in general and Ethiopia in particular."Particularly the relations between the two countries are increasing from time to time...We also thank the supporting hand of the Chinese government and the Chinese institutions. BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese yuan strengthened to a record high against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday to reach 6.6128 per dollar.The central parity rate of the Chinese currency, also known as the renminbi (RMB), was set 88 basis points lower than Tuesday's 6.6216, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.China's central bank announced on June 19, 2010, it would further reform the yuan exchange rate formation mechanism to improve its flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate each trading day.The central parity rate of the RMB against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of enquired prices from all market makers before the opening of the market each business day.
