(KGTV) - The City of San Marcos is turning to crowdfunding to make up for budget shortfalls in their 4th of July plans.For the second straight year, the city set up a GoFundMe website to raise money for fireworks. This year's goal is ,500.City officials tell 10News the city already pitches in ,000 to pay for entertainment, security, permits and other costs associated with their annual Fireworks Extravaganza.They also say traditional donations have brought in about ,000 for fireworks. But the fireworks show costs K."I can tell you, it's the best show in North County," says San Marcos Recreations Programs Manager Andrea Gonzalez. "It's a real show-stopper."Last year's GoFundMe brought in more than ,000. Gonzalez says the city still solicits donations from past donors through the mail and phone calls, but those have been down over the last few years. They decided to get creative and make it easier for people to chip in."It's a lot easier to get on your Facebook page and contribute to a GoFundMe with one click than having to write a check," says Gonzalez.Other 4th of July celebrations have done the same thing. Scientists believe they have discovered a new species of whale in Mexico.The team was taking underwater video and audio samples of three beaked whales near Baja California. They work with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society near the San Benito Islands, about 300 miles from the U.S. border.They originally were looking for what animal was making an unidentified sound recorded in 2018 in the area.Experts in the field of beaked whales now say the scientists’ observations don’t match anything seen before, and they are “highly confident” the video shows an entirely new species, according to a press release.“We saw something new. Something that was not expected in this area, something that doesn’t match, either visually or acoustically, anything that is known to exist,” said Dr. Jay Barlow in a statement from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. “It just sends chills up and down my spine when I think that we might have accomplished what most people would say was truly impossible – finding a large mammal that exists on this earth that is totally unknown to science.”Scientists are now using genetic sampling to confirm what the scientists found is really a new kind of beaked whale.The discovery of a new species of beaked whale proves how much mystery there is left to discover in the oceans that our captains, crews, and research partners fight to defend,” said Peter Hammarstedt, Director of Campaigns for Sea Shepherd. 1442

SEDGWICK, Colo. – A man suspected of killing three members of a Kentucky family who were found dead Monday was arrested Monday afternoon near a small town in northeast Colorado.Edward Siddens, was arrested around 4:20 p.m. in Sedgwick, Colorado, which is just south and west of borders with Nebraska.He was wanted by Kentucky State Police out of Allen County, Kentucky. In connection to the deaths of Jimmy Siddens, his wife, Helen Siddens, and their son, Jimmy Siddens II. It's unclear how Edward Siddens might be related to the deceased.According to Kentucky authorities and local media reports, a county water employee was checking the family’s meter Monday and found two bodies on the ground. Authorities found another body nearby.The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office says it was notified shortly after 4 p.m. Monday that Siddens as in the county.Siddens was believed to have been driving a stolen vehicle when he was found by deputies in the town of Sedgwick. The sheriff’s office says deputies were involved in a “short low speed pursuit” with Siddens before he was arrested without incident.The sheriff’s office confirmed that Siddens was the man arrested Monday, and said it was working with Kentucky state police. Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan told protesters occupying several city blocks they are in no danger of being invaded by the federal government despite comments from President Donald Trump saying he is ready to “take back” the city.The protesters, who have seized control of Seattle’s East Precinct police station, are pushing the city to make significant reforms to policing. After days of unrest, at times becoming violent, the protests have largely not been violent since protesters have declared the area an “autonomous zone.”The protesters are among those calling for police reforms in the wake of George Floyd's death. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - It’s been two days since 29 year old Frank Stricker drove his truck into a crowd of street vendors near the border in Mexico. Court records from Utah show Stricker should have never been behind the wheel in the first place because he has a suspended license. The court records show Stricker has been arrested six times since 2008 in Utah and has 47 criminal charges, all mostly drug related. RELATED: 'We were fleeing for our lives.' They expect him to be arraigned Thursday in Mexican court. In the crash Monday afternoon, Stricker hit 17 vehicles, 12 vendor carts and injured three people.
