UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- China supports for UN General Assembly to play an even greater role in handling international affairs, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Monday.Yang made the remarks in a meeting with UN General Assembly President Joseph Deiss at UN Headquarters on the sidelines of a high-level meeting on anti-poverty goals.The foreign minister voiced hope for the General Assembly to attach greater importance to development issues, proactively implement the outcomes of the UN high-level meeting, pay attention to the concerns of developing countries and further promote international development cooperation.On Monday morning, Yang also held separate meetings with Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa and the foreign ministers of Khazakstan, Indonesia and Switzerland.He told Mousa that China hopes for a stronger Sina-Arab strategic relationship of cooperation, and that China remains committed to supporting the just cause of the Palestinian people in seeking legitimate national interests.

CAIRO, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Egyptian industry officials vowed closer bilateral economic ties on Sunday with the signing of an industrial cooperation agreement.Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid met with Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Yizhong. Both talked about the expansion and improvement of bilateral trade and economic cooperation.Rachid told reporters that he hoped the new agreement would pave the way for more cooperation in different industry sectors including manufacturing of cars components, textiles, petrochemicals, electronics and technology."This agreement includes the process of sharing technology and increasing investment in the industrial sector and training of workers as well as helping Egyptian companies promote their products in the Chinese markets," said the Egyptian minister.The agreement also included the formation of an Egyptian- Chinese task force that takes the responsibility of sharing information and experiments in the industrial sectors and encouraging Egyptian and Chinese firms to establish joint ventures in different areas of cooperation, according to Rachid.Rachid said that Egypt wanted to benefit from the successful Chinese experience in the industrial sector.Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif also met with the Chinese minister. The prime minister said Egypt shows great interest in boosting cooperation with China.The bilateral trade between Egypt and China increased from 3 billion U.S. dollars in 2006 to 6.24 billion dollars in 2008, according to Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Wu Chunhua.By the end of last year, Chinese investment in Egypt exceeded 500 million U.S. dollars. Chinese auto companies such as Chery Automobile and Brilliance Automobile have had assembly lines here in Egypt.Rachid expected that the Egyptian-Chinese cooperation would witness a great milestone in all sectors, particularly the trade and industry relations thanks to exchanges in the economic and political levels.

Is it because they resent China's development path and hate China's political system?" STOCKHOLM, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Iceland's President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson Wednesday said that Iceland's government and people sincerely appreciate China's precious support to Iceland in dealing with financial crisis and treat China as a trustworthy friend and important cooperation partner, according to a report reaching here from Reykjavik."Iceland is willing to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields including geothermal energy, earthquake monitoring, culture and tourism. BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China Merchants Bank said Friday its profit rose 57.4 percent to 20.59 billion yuan (3.07 billion U.S. dollars) in the first three quarters from one year earlier.The jump in net profit was mainly due to higher interest income, the bank said in its business report filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange.Also, total assets of the mid-sized lender had expanded to 2.36 trillion yuan by the end of September, up 14.10 percent from the end of 2009.Additionally, the bank's non-performing loan ratio was 0.64 percent, down 0.18 percentage points from the beginning of this year.Shares of the bank were down 2.41 percent at 14.57 yuan in Shanghai and down 1.13 percent at 21.95 HK dollars in Hong Kong Friday.
