SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A splash of color brings life back to Bay Park Elementary. Over the weekend, parents and volunteers joined together to give the school a facelift. The beautification project now has kids excited to come to school. “They were just blown away,” says Emily Auer. “Their face just lit up. They actually touched the walls.”Bay Park Elementary is approaching it’s the 80th anniversary. The school’s beautification team brought together almost 80 volunteers. The project started Friday night until late Sunday afternoon. Volunteers painted the walls and wooden backpack holders. Parents tell 10News one family donated a bunch of small desks with chairs that now sit in the halls. Behr gave the paint for the project. “Such a wonderful group of kids, so positive,” says parent Erica Krystek. “We really wanted that positivity reflected in the hallways.”The Bay Park Elementary Beautification Team plans to do more upgrades in the future. They hope to paint and add new carpet to the school’s auditorium. 1022

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In honor of Veterans Day, dozens of volunteers found a way to give back to current active duty military service members.The organization Waves of Appreciation packed thousands of "Appreciation bags" filled with snacks for service members traveling through San Diego during the holidays.Volunteers fill the bags assembly line style. This program started in 2011 when the founder of the event saw a military service member traveling alone during the holidays, exhausted and hungry. Since then volunteers have handed out more than 24,000 bags.Waves of Appreciation is looking for volunteers to pass out the goodie bags at Lindbergh Field in December in time for the holidays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two horses died Sunday after being seriously injured during separate races at the Del Mar Racetrack.A third horse was also hospitalized with an injury.The track tweeted at 2:17 p.m. confirming that in Sunday's third race, Ghost Street suffered a "catastrophic injury to his left front sesamoid and was humanely euthanized."Ghost Street was a 3-year-old gelding.A short while later, Prayer Warrior, a 3-year-old colt, was euthanized after suffering an injury to his front leg in Sunday's sixth race. 527
