WASHINGTON – The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is introducing a new Purple Heart Medal Forever stamp this month.The Forever stamp will go on sale nationwide on Oct. 4 and will be issued in self-adhesive sheets of 20.Like the Purple Heart Medal, the USPS says the stamp will honor the members of the U.S. military who have been wounded or killed in action. The Purple Heart Medal has a long history that starts with George Washington, who established the Badge of Military Merit during the Revolutionary War. It was discontinued after the war, but reinstated with a new design in 1932, the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth. Whether on the field or from the sidelines, it’s clear to see rugby is a very special sport. A sport where every athlete runs, rucks, scrums, and mauls. Oh yeah, they also tackle without any pads. “There’s a lot more adrenaline going, and a lot of times, I won’t even realize that I’ve been stepped on,” says rugby player Kaya Troyer. “Which is a little different than other sports.”Now, this sport played around the world is attracting more athletes in the United States. Players like Abigail Tofoya, who traveled from to California to Colorado for a girls rugby camp.“It’s a sisterhood; it’s a bond,” she says. “You develop so many friendships through this.”In 2014, the Sports and Fitness Industry Association reported rugby as the fastest growing team sport in the U.S., with participation growing by 350 percent in a five-year period.“Rugby, it gives me that very competitive edge,” says rugby player Lena Luciano.To gain that competitive edge, players are learning from the best rugby minds the country has to offer. Getting top-level tips from coaches like Jaime Burke, who represented her country while playing for the U.S. Women’s National Team in three Women’s Rugby World Cups.“It’s much different than when I first started out,” she says. “At this point, we have pretty much year-round programming from U8 all the way through U15.”Attracting a bigger audience, however, doesn’t come without concern.“Her daughter wanted my daughter to play and I was like, ‘No way! You’re crazy!’” recalls rugby parent Robin Hartman.Injuries do happen in all sports, including rugby.“The biggest risks we’re seeing is when we look at elite players, collegiate players, and youth players is a risk to the head and neck and then ligament injuries are also pretty common as well,” explains Scott Laker, MD, medical director of the UCHealth Concussion Clinic.Dr. Laker broke down the health risks ranked by sport.“Youth hockey probably has the highest rate of concussions, then probably youth rugby, and then below that is youth soccer,” he says. “The lowest rate is swimming and diving.” Some athletes, however, enjoy contact and say that the excitement of rugby continues to grow among girls across the country one game at a time. 2236

VOLKMARSEN, Germany (AP) — Police in Germany say several people have been injured after a car drove into a crowd at a Carnival procession. Northern Hesse police said a large number of police are at the scene in Volkmarsen, about 175 miles southwest of Berlin, and the driver was arrested. Police said they couldn't immediately provide further details and urged people not to spread “unconfirmed reports" about the incident, which happened early Monday afternoon. Police say they have not received any reports of any deaths, and don't have a specific number of injuries yet. They say it is too early to say what caused the car to crash into the crowd. 662

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Elizabeth Tikoyan admits her phone is never far from her hands.“Most people are on their phones for hours a day,” she said.Her phone served as a lifeline, of sorts – especially when she spent a chunk of her teenage years in the hospital.“When I was in high school, all my friends were going to their homecomings and proms,” Tikoyan said, “and I was going to doctors and treatment centers and they didn't know what was wrong with me.”Eventually, doctors figured out she had advanced Lyme disease. However, she never forgot the loneliness she experienced during that time.“I thought, ‘how could we personalize a way to connect with people on a one-to-one basis and make a more personalized connection?’ That's what was missing for me,” she said.That led Tikoyan to develop the Riley app.It allows people to connect to one another based on similar medical conditions, like cancer, autoimmune diseases and, now, even the coronavirus – where self-quarantines could lead to people feeling isolated.”Knowing that, other people out there are experiencing the same thing or going through the same experience, is really making them feel so much more empowered,” Tikoyan said.Among those people is Kathryn White, who also has Lyme disease, along with complex PTSD. Her service dog, Constantine, is constantly at her side, but she’s also found kindred spirits in the Riley app.“You start with, ‘hello, how are you?’ and then it quickly evolves into ‘how you doing today? How are you feeling?’” White said.So far, she has messaged others with similar conditions, including a person who lives in Spain.“One of the main things I was looking for was a friendship, was that support network, and I definitely found that with various people,” White said.Users can put in as little or as much personal information as they want into the free app. The Riley team said security is a top priority: they monitor for inappropriate content and allow users to flag it as well.“By connecting with each other, we can hopefully change the stigma and go out there and really feel empowered,” Tikoyan said.Since launching in January, more than 700 people have joined the Riley app. The team behind it is now working with several hospital systems to expand the app’s reach. 2270

United States senators have a knack for talking a lot, sometimes speaking for hours on end. For instance, Sen. Strom Thurmond once led a 24-hour filibuster in opposition of passage of the 1957 Civil Rights Act. But for the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, senators are being told to be quiet. On Wednesday, Senate leaders Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., issued an official memo concerning decorum during the trial. The decorum guidelines tell senators to not engage in conversation with neighboring senators during the trial. Senators also are being prohibited from using electronic devices, like cellphones, on the Senate floor. Senators were also told that the only reading material allowed will be those relevant to the trial. Other bullet points in the memo state that senators should refer to Chief Justice John Roberts as "Mr. Chief Justice." Also, senators were told to stand quietly when Roberts enters and exits the chamber. The trial is expected to go six days a week, with Sundays being the only day off for senators during the trial. 1089
