SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Security is tight at San Diego's mosques following an arson attack at a mosque in Escondido early Sunday morning. Someone set fire to the Islamic Center of Escondido on West Sixth Avenue around 3 a.m, but a handful of worshippers was inside, and the group put out the fire before it caused any significant damage. When police arrived, they found a message in graffiti referencing the recent shootings at mosques in New Zealand. Monday afternoon, two San Diego Police Department patrol cars sat in the parking lot of the Islamic Center of San Diego. Directors say worshipers are nervous. "They accept the faith of what happened, others are very, you know, worried as well. It's a mixed mood," said Khelil Ouznali, vice chair of the board of directors. The center already has surveillance cameras all over the property and guards on duty, but now the directors are considering hiring armed guards. "We are looking into improving security, you know, we are looking into different options based on the feedback from our community," said Ouznali. On the campus of San Diego State University Monday, dozens of students rallied against hate. They marched through the student union chanting, "No hate at state, Muslims are here to stay, no hate at state, Muslims are here to stay!" Faduma Mohamed is a member of the Muslim Student Association. "It just goes to show there's a lot of hate against us, but although some people can attempt to destroy Muslims, Islam itself the religion, cannot be destroyed," said Mohamed. The group posted pictures of the lives lost in the shooting rampages at the mosques in New Zealand and the attack at a Jewish Synagogue in Pittsburgh. SAN DIEGO (CNS) — Two men who were allegedly running an illegal hash oil lab inside a Lemon Grove warehouse were charged by federal prosecutors Friday.Adam Ledesma and Jared Hoffman are charged with manufacturing around 166 kilograms of hash oil inside the building raided by Drug Enforcement Administration agents on Thursday.The hash oil, valued at more than .75 million, was seized along with ``sophisticated laboratory equipment'' valued at more than million, according to the DEA.In the criminal complaint filed Friday, DEA Special Agent James Gillis wrote that DEA agents regularly surveilled the building over the past month, and observed Ledesma and Hoffman regularly entering the building.There were ``no visible indications of commercial or manufacturing operations operating out of the building,'' according to Gillis, who said that on May 14, he found a number of paint buckets, stainless steel pots and other items he alleged were consistent with manufacturing cannabis inside two dumpsters in the building's loading dock. The building's electricity bills dating back to last May were also ``excessive and consistent with the amount of electricity required to operate equipment commonly used for concentrated cannabis extraction and/or indoor marijuana cultivation.''Search warrants were served Thursday for the premises, which has no license for marijuana cultivation from either the state or San Diego County, according to the DEA.Authorities said it was the sixth hash oil lab in San Diego County dismantled by federal authorities within the past three weeks. Explosions at two of those labs sent four people to hospitals with serious burns, the DEA said.The agency alleged that the Lemon Grove lab was in particular danger of an explosion or fire, due to high combustible gas readings at the premises, as well as a large amount of ethanol found at the lab. 1886

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Military families sent 10News letters discussing a myriad of issues their students faced when they transferred from out of state into San Diego Unified School District.One student, who didn't want to be identified, sent a letter that read in part, "I would dread getting up everyday knowing that this was going to be a continuous process," explaining he didn't get the same treatment in an assistance program here, compared to where he previously lived.Another letter discusses a woman's special needs children, "It took over a week to even get my children placed in classrooms to start school with no updates as to why. After calling several times we were able to get placements for our children. I know that special needs children have to be placed in certain classrooms and things like that, but for it to take that long is a little excessive." She continued stating in the letter, "two of our children are waitlisted (with no foreseeable date of service) for speech therapy with a letter stating that it is because there is a "lack of available therapists" in the area."Erika Bradley said her daughter had trouble transferring AP and Honors credits, and once she was pulled out to be home schooled, she was told her daughter couldn't participate on the Varsity Soccer team."It put her in a tailspin... We had many instances of panic attacks," she said."We have upwards of 8,000 military dependent students within our district," Jennifer Coronel, Program Manager of Children and Youth in Transition at SDUSD said. That's about 7% of the district's student population.On SDUSD's website, you can find numerous resources for military families. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A California couple who operated a charity that claimed to provide goods to San Diegans in need has been sentenced to prison.Geraldine Hill and Clayton Hill pleaded guilty to the charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and tax evasion in June, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California. Geraldine has been sentenced to 15 months in prison while Clayton was sentenced to 9 months in prison.The couple operated On Your Feet, also known as Family Resource Center. From 2011 to 2016, the pair obtained more than .35 million in donated clothing and other items and claimed the items would be given to the needy, according to prosecutors. The items were supposed to benefit low-income families in San Diego.“While fraud is always wrong, the theft of charitable donations that were to be used to help San Diego’s low income families is particularly disheartening,” said Acting FBI Special Agent in Charge Omer Meisel. “This type of fraud and deceit for personal gain simply cannot be tolerated. The FBI is committed to ensuring that white collar predators don’t prevent those less fortunate from receiving all the benefits that generous donors provide to seemingly legitimate non-profit organizations.”The Hills only donated about ,000 in charitable donations and sold the remaining items, using the proceeds to support themselves, their family, and lavish spending, prosecutors say. Between January 2011 and February 2017, the couple spent nearly 0,000 from personal and charity bank accounts on luxury retail, vacations, entertainment, and vehicles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 2-year-old-boy died and three other children became ill as a result of E. Coli linked to contact with animals at the San Diego County Fair, health officials said Friday. Four cases of infections have been confirmed in children ranging from 2 to 13 years old, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.1st case: A 13-year-old girl visited the fair on June 8. Illness onset began on June 10. The girl is currently recovering and was not hospitalized.2nd case: A 11-year-old girl visited the fair on June 8 and 12. Illness onset began on June 12. The girl is currently recovering and was not hospitalized.3rd case: A 9-year-old boy visited the fair on June 13. Illness onset began on June 16. The boy is currently recovering and was not hospitalized.4th case: A 2-year-old boy visited the fair on June 15. Illness onset began on June 19. Boy suffered from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and was hospitalized. The boy died on June 24.The 2-year-old boy, identified by family members as Jedediah Cabezuela, died from Shiga-toxin-producing E. Coli (STEC). Health officials said Saturday there were no other clusters of Shiga-toxin in the county.E. Coli can cause the complication HUS. The condition destroys red blood cells and causes the kidneys fail, which can lead to death.The source of the E.Coli bacteria is under investigation by the County Department of Environmental Health, and Health and Human Services Epidemiology Program. County inspectors said the illnesses had no link to any food facilities the children accessed. People who do not wash their hands after petting an animal, or bring food or drinks into an area with animals, increase their chance of getting sick, CDC officials said.
