ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - News of an arrest in connection to a fatal cyclist hit-and-run crash came as the victim's family mourned together on his favorite holiday. "Can't stop thinking about him and about that day," said Marc Engelhardt.Engelhardt calls the last week all-consuming and painful, since the moment he doubled back during a six-hour bike ride to see what was keeping his friends - only to discover the horrific aftermath. His friend Kevin Lentz, 36, a husband and new father, was struck and killed on an Escondido street, hit head-on by a dark sedan which promptly took off."Disbelief, surreal," said Engelhardt.RELATED: Friends mourn bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crashPolice say they discovered the heavily damaged car about a half mile away. On Thanksgiving, they announced the arrest of a suspect, 41-year-old Jamison Connor, on an unrelated parole warrant related to weapons, drugs and DUI charges."Certainly a sense of relief," said Engelhardt.Engelhardt says news of the arrest came as Lentz's family came together."Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday. He's a food guy. Yesterday was a special time for them ... They were trying to focus on how great Kevin was. Emotionally exhausting is probably the best way to put it, all these mixed feelings ... Very difficult. Obviously they are happy that the arrest happened," said Engelhardt.Police have not said how they linked Connor to the crash, only saying detectives 'developed information' he was behind the wheel.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1566

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County's rising coronavirus case numbers will determine what can stay open and what must shut down again. The uncertainty is taking both a financial and emotional toll for local restaurant owners.Open. Close. Open. Close. This isn't the revolving door that welcomes customers into local restaurants, it's the state's rules on indoor dining that is worrying business owners."It's devastating thinking that we might have to close again," Charlie's Family Restaurant owner, Suzan Meleka said. "I haven't slept in two nights."When the quarantine began in mid-March, the 28-year-old Escondido diner had to shut its doors. Meleka said they tried take-out. But as a traditional sit-down diner, it just wasn't for them. Then came the good news on May 21, 2020. With temperature checks, new cleaning, social distancing protocols in place, Charlie's reopened, and their loyal regulars came back."The food is great, the prices are great, the atmosphere is great!" one customer said."It's like a family here," said another."We were worried that a lot of them might forget about us because we were closed for two and a half months," Meleka said. "So they've just been wonderful. They are glad to be back to some sort of normalcy."But that normalcy did not last too long for diners in 19 California counties on the state's watch list. On July 1, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom declared that every restaurant in counties surrounding San Diego had to again, stop serving food indoors. So far, San Diego is clear from that list. But Meleka is worried we are next."I think if restaurants are following every single protocol, they shouldn't be penalized," Meleka said.Compared to their large dining hall and banquet room for overflow, Charlie's only has four outdoor tables. This may not be enough capacity for the beloved family diner to muscle through another forced shutdown."I keep saying it's the twilight zone because it's just unbelievable," Meleka said.Meleka hopes everyone follows the state's guidelines so that San Diego County can stay off the state's watch list. She says the goal is for all local restaurants to keep their businesses afloat. 2179

ENCINITAS (CNS) - The Rancho Coastal Humane Society will take in 23 puppies, adolescent, and adult dogs from the Mexican state of Sonora this morning -- the latest in a series of lifesaving transports from Rescue Fenix in Obregon, working hand-in-paw with the humane society and Greater Good Charities."These dogs were rescued from the streets and taken to the Rescue Fenix shelter," said John Van Zante, RCHS spokesman. "They live in outdoor colony kennels. The puppies and smaller dogs compete for food with every other dog. Many of them would not survive if they were not taken in by Rescue Fenix then transferred out of there."The dogs began their 17-hour ride to Tijuana early Friday morning. They crossed the border early Saturday morning and then got some rest at the home of a Rescue Fenix volunteer in Escondido. The dogs are scheduled to be transferred to RCHS in Encinitas on Saturday morning. Rescue Fenix volunteer Georgina Parsa, who lives in Escondido, will complete the transfer."Our Medical team will perform examinations before the dogs are settled into their new kennels with food, water, and their first soft bedding," said Judi Sanzo, RCHS president. "Some of them will go into foster care with trained RCHS volunteers. In the coming days the dogs will receive more extensive exams, vaccinations, medical treatment including spay or neuter, and each dog will be micro chipped before becoming available for adoption."Sanzo said the relationship between Rancho Coastal Humane Society and Rescue Fenix is new, but it's already proven successful."From the first transfer, we were told that the dogs and puppies who arrived here would not have survived if we had not taken them. That's how important this is. Together -- we save lives," Sanzo said. For more information about Rancho Coastal Humane Society's adoptions visit www.sdpets.org or call 760-753-6413. 1882

Federal investigators are looking into whether a huge wildfire near Los Angeles was sparked by Southern California Edison utility equipment. Edison says it has turned over a section of an overhead conductor from the utility’s facility near a dam in the area where the Bobcat Fire started Sept. 6. The initial report of fire was near Cogswell Dam at 12:21 p.m. Sept. 6. The utility says five minutes earlier, at 12:16 p.m., a circuit at the substation experienced a possible disturbance or event. Edison says cameras captured smoke developing in the area around 12:10 p.m., prior to the activity on Edison’s circuit. As of Thursday, there are still 26 ongoing wildfires in California being fought by 18,200 firefighters. In the last six weeks, fires have consumed 6,700 buildings and have killed 26 people. Crews say that cooler weather in the state is helping firefighters make progress on the wildfires, which have consumed 3.6 million acres of land in the state since the start of the year. 999
