SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six people were arrested at a Pacific Beach DUI checkpoint Friday night, according to San Diego Police.The checkpoint was held on the 2700 block of Garnet Avenue between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.According to the department, nearly 1,350 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, 845 were screened, seven drivers evaluated, and six arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.“Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public,” the department said. 619

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — She's a pre-med student at UCSD with hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon, and for the last year-and-a-half, Shea Cruise has been homeless.Like so many on the UCSD campus, the senior's plate is pretty full. The neuroscience student has a rigorous course load."I was taking 20 units this quarter, full time is 12," said Cruise, 23.But her studies aren't the only thing occupying her thoughts. When classes are over and she's finished her shift as a server, Cruise must figure out where she's going to sleep.She calls her 2006 Ford Focus home. She's parked it in store lots, near the beach and in campus parking structures overnight. She qualifies for some financial aid but it's enough to cover her tuition. Shortly after transferring to the school two summers ago from Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, she decided to live in her car to save money. "I shower in the gym on campus," said Cruise.Cruise also borrows her textbooks — whatever it takes. "This was something I had to do to reach my goals. Something I was willing to sacrifice," said Cruise. Then, four weeks ago came an unexpected medical diagnosis, which will force her to take leave from her job for appointments and treatment.Cruise started a Gofundme campaign to help with tuition and other expenses, at the same time revealing a truth few on campus were aware of."It's an invisible population. Speaking about it hopefully will bring more light not to me but others in my position," said Cruise.As for her academic position, she currently has a 3.8 GPA and is determined to graduate this June."I don't look at my situation as a victim. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Smugglers from Mexico have reportedly been able to breach recently constructed sections of the border wall, according to a report from The Washington Post. Smugglers breached the wall's bollard steel and concrete sections using reciprocating saws, allowing drugs and people to pass through from Mexico, the Post reported, citing U.S. agents and officials. The exact locations of the damaged wall were not indicated.10News reached out to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Saturday. While no one was available to speak, the CBP said in an email, "the bollard walls were not designed to be impenetrable or indestructible."RELATED: Border officials say the wall is working, drug smuggling shifting to the seaThis contrasts President Donald Trump's claims during a visit to San Diego in September, in which he claimed the bollard walls were "virtually impenetrable." The President went on to say at the time, "if you think you're going to cut it with a blow torch, that doesn't work because you hit concrete. And then if you think you're going to go through the concrete that doesn't work because we have very powerful rebar inside."The new 14-mile stretch of bollard fencing was completed in August, running from Otay Mountain to San Diego's coastline. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University astronomers played a role in the recent discovery of a third planet within the Kepler-47 planetary system.A team of researchers, led by astronomers from SDSU, discovered a new Neptune-size planet orbiting the system's two suns between two previously discovered planets.The planet, named Kepler-47d, was discovered using a method called, "transit method," according to to university. The method measures a level of brightness to help detect masses. "If the orbital plane of the planet is aligned edge-on as seen from Earth, the planet can pass in front of the host stars, leading to a measurable decrease in the observed brightness," a release from the school describes.RELATED: Researchers share photo of a black hole — the first ever in historyPreviously, the planet's signal was too weak to detect.“We saw a hint of a third planet back in 2012, but with only one transit we needed more data to be sure,” SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, the paper’s lead author, said in the release. “With an additional transit, the planet’s orbital period could be determined, and we were then able to uncover more transits that were hidden in the noise in the earlier data.”Kepler-47d is about seven times the size of Earth and takes 87 days to orbit around its suns.“We certainly didn’t expect it to be the largest planet in the system. This was almost shocking,” said William Welsh, SDSU astronomer and the study’s co-author.The entire Kepler-47 system itself is interesting as well. With two suns, it's the only known multi-planet circumbinary system. The system is extremely compact and would fit inside the orbit of Earth. It's located about 3340 light-years away in the direction of constellation Cygnus. 1748
