SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has opened cool zones as the county faces scorching temperatures amid the coronavirus pandemic. A cool zone will open at noon today in the former Sears building at Chula Vista Center, providing socially distant and disinfected spaces to beat the heat.With a heat wave expected this weekend and into next week and the city's recreation centers and libraries closed to the public due to the pandemic, the city issued a statement saying the opening of a cool zone was paramount.The Chula Vista cool zone will be open when temperatures exceed 85 degrees, and will be operated by city recreation staff. It will remain open through next week.RELATED: Dangerous heat set to sweep through San Diego CountyVisitors to the zone, located at 565 Broadway, are required to wear a face covering while inside and may bring one personal bag.There will be seating available and movies playing. Each area will be disinfected between uses. Water is allowed, but no food, no smoking and no pets. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police arrested a domestic violence suspect Friday morning after a standoff in La Mesa that temporarily blocked access to parts of Grossmont Center. The La Mesa and San Diego police departments responded to the situation at Grossmont Center Drive and Center Drive just before 8 a.m. Both streets were closed as officers worked to detain the suspect, La Mesa Police reported in a tweet.The situation started Thursday night when police received a call from the victim, saying she was choked by her ex-boyfriend at a residence on the 6800 block of Hyde Park Drive, San Diego police said.Police responded about 7:20 p.m. but the suspect already had fled in the girlfriend's car. Officers took a crime report and the victim was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa as a precautionary measure.The suspect returned to the residence this morning and the victim called the police again, according to SDPD. The suspect then drove to Grossmont Center, where police found him around 7:30 a.m. The suspect was arrested at 8:19 a.m. and taken into custody.The streets in the area were reopened around 8:30 a.m., SDPD said. 1145

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - State data has landed San Diego County in the most restrictive tier of the state's COVID-19 reopening plan, meaning nonessential businesses have two days to prepare for the regression.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said the restrictions associated with the purple tier will go into place just after midnight Friday."These are the results of our individual actions and behaviors that assign us to a tier," she said.Many nonessential businesses will be required to move to outdoor-only operations. These include restaurants, family entertainment centers, wineries, places of worship, movie theaters, museums, gyms, zoos, aquariums and cardrooms. Amusement parks, and live audience sporting events are closed. Bars, breweries and distilleries will be able to remain open as long as they are able to operate outside and with food on the same ticket as alcohol.Retail businesses and shopping centers will be able to remain open with 25% of the building's capacity. No food courts will be permitted.Schools will be able to remain open for in-person learning if they are already in session. If a district has not reopened for in-person learning, it must remain remote only. San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Tuesday that 11 counties in California were preparing to move to more restrictive tiers. A county then has to be in that tier for a minimum of three weeks before it may move to a less restrictive tier.Even as the number of cases continues to climb, the testing positivity rate for the region continues a decline. From last week's data, it dropped to 2.6%, a 0.8% decline. It still remains high enough for this metric to remain in the orange tier.The state's health equity metric, which looks at the testing positivity for areas with the least healthy conditions, increased from 5.3% to 6.5% and remained in the red tier. This metric does not move counties backward to more restrictive tiers, but is required to advance.The state data reflect the previous week's case numbers to determine where counties stand.San Diego County health officials reported 483 new COVID-19 infections and seven deaths Tuesday, raising the region's total to 61,053 cases and 915 deaths.Of the tests reported Tuesday, 5% returned positive, raising the 14- day rolling average of positive tests to 3.5%.Of the total number of cases in the county, 4,084 -- or 6.7% -- have required hospitalization and 944 patients -- or 1.5% of all cases -- had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Five new community outbreaks were reported Tuesday, one each in a restaurant/bar, grocery setting, retail setting, TK-12 school and a business setting. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gas & Electric announced Wednesday that ratepayers will once again have the opportunity to reduce their monthly bill by driving an electric vehicle.SDG&E has made the promotion available to electric vehicle drivers for the last two years in an effort to combat the effects of climate change and reduce the county's collective carbon footprint. The county's roughly 35,000 plug-in electric vehicle drivers can apply for the credit, administered by the California Air Resources Board, though May 31.Last year's Electric Vehicle Climate Credit was 0 for each of the roughly 15,000 residents who applied. In 2017, about 7,000 residents received credits of roughly 0 each.SDG&E also offers time-of-use charging plans for electric vehicles when residents pay a monthly service fee of . Drivers can charge their car from midnight to 6 a.m. on weekdays and midnight to 2 p.m. on weekends and holidays for 9 cents per kilowatt hour, which is equivalent to paying 75 cents per gallon of gas.``In addition to the environmental benefits, the performance of electric vehicles and the savings that come from fueling a car with electricity versus gasoline are driving a growing number of people to make the switch to plug-in electric vehicles,'' said Mike Schneider, SDG&E's vice president of clean transportation and asset management.Residents who drive electric vehicles can apply for the credit online by using their SDG&E account number, their car's Vehicle Identification Number and a digital copy of their DMV registration. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police searched Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light at a Mission Valley intersection and slammed into another car, seriously injuring it's 60-year-old driver.The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Friars and Frazee roads, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.A 60-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus sedan southbound on Frazee Road when a man driving a blue Ford pickup truck westbound on Friars Road ran a red light at Frazee and crashed into the driver's side of the Lexus, Heims said.The pickup driver kept driving, then pulled over a short distance away before he got out and ran away, the officer said.
