SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A San Diego fire captain convicted of domestic violence was sentenced Wednesday.Steven Michaels received three years probation, 52 weeks of counseling and 180 days of custody which will be served in a county parole and alternative custody program, according to City News Service.Michaels, a veteran fire captain with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, pleaded guilty in 2017 to shoving his girlfriend against a wall and refusing to let her use a phone to call for help, CNS reported.RELATED: Veteran San Diego fire captain pleads guilty to domestic violence chargeMichaels filed a request to have the felony charge reduced to a misdemeanor, but Judge Timothy Walsh denied the request citing a history of alcohol-related incidents of domestic violence.The felony conviction will likely cause Michaels to lose his job."He's taken away his career," said Walsh," if there is a career left. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company created technology for NASA's 2020 Mars rover, launching in July.The Perseverance is set to launch July 20, at 9:15 a.m. EST.NASA's been working on this project for more than a decade, drawing from past missions with hopes of finding evidence of past life on the red planet."It's a really exciting mission!" Mike Carpenter, VP of Engineering at KULR Technology said."We don't know for sure what they're going to find, but if they find any hard evidence of life that would be wonderful." Carpenter is thrilled to be a part of this mission, bringing a piece of San Diego to Mars.Carpenter said the company is known for it's technology that keeps batteries from exploding.For the rover, they created heat sinks that control the temperature around sensitive instruments. Specifically the heat sinks on Perseverance protect SHERLOC, a detector on the arm of the rover that looks for signs of past life.KULR sent similar tech to Mercury, but this is their first trip to Mars."It is the largest most sophisticated rover NASA has sent there," Carpenter said.According to NASA, Perseverance will be landing in the Jezero Crater, the site of an ancient river delta.The mission has four Science Goals:1. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man involved in a reported domestic violence incident in City Heights early Wednesday morning made his way onto the roof of a building and refused to come down, prompting a standoff with San Diego police.According to SDPD officials, officers responded to a domestic violence-related call at around 2:30 a.m. at a home in the 4100 block of Wilson Avenue. Police say the incident involved a man and his girlfriend, and the man allegedly destroyed a phone line or cell phone.When officers arrived, they spotted the man in the incident and tried to get him to surrender, but he ran away.With police in pursuit, the man climbed onto the roof of a home on 35th Street. Officers surrounded the home, but when police placed a ladder for the man to come down, he grabbed the ladder and pulled it onto the roof with him.The man used the ladder to help him cross onto the roof of a two-story apartment building in the 4000 block of 35th Street.As police negotiators tried to get the man to come down, he reportedly threatened officers with makeshift weapons and threw objects at emergency responders.After nearly 19 hours, the man was taken into custody just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night. 1211

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Hillcrest man was left feeling helpless after he spots a burglar inside his home on Christmas Eve while he was on the other side of the country. Tyler Luna was visiting family in Mississippi when he wanted to check on a recent gift from a client. He got a red flower that is supposed to bloom on Christmas. Before he left, he set up surveillance cameras and placed the flower in a window nearby. He opened the app on his phone and saw the flower and a thief inside his home."Your heart sinks and its like what’s happening," Luna said. In a panic, Luna called 911 but the Mississippi dispatchers told him they couldn’t help. He flew home Christmas night and met with police immediately to file a police report. "It was very scary."When he went inside his home he found his class ring missing, his watch drawer empty of all watches, and some valuables in his nightstand, all gone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local hardware store is hoping to find the family of a mysterious model the store used for an ad when it first opened its doors in the late 1800s.The woman, known as the “Hardware Lady,” modeled hardware items on her dress for one of San Diego Hardware’s first advertisements 125 years ago.The company is hoping to identify the mystery model in time for their December 8 anniversary party. The store also hopes to honor the model and her family.The model’s dress was styled with keys, locks and chains and a small wood burning stove. The woman’s crown was made of spoons, clothespins and other hardware from the store.The store was founded in 1892 and now operates in Kearny Mesa and online. 721
