The team is expected to be here for seven to 10 days. The catastrophic earthquake hit northeast of Japan on March 11, triggering severe tsunami and causing extensive damage and loss in different areas. SAN FRANCISCO, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Web exploit toolkits, or " packaged" attack frameworks that can be traded online, are rapidly growing as the top cybercrime weapon due to ease of use and high success rate, a new report has found."When it comes to conducting online crime, exploit toolkits are the weapon of choice for many cyber criminals," said the "2010 Top Cyber Security Risks Report" published by Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) on Monday. The trend started in 2006 with the release of WebAttacker, considered by many to be the first modern day web exploit toolkit, according to the report. An emerging trend ensued and soon took off, and today the Internet is subjected to hundreds of exploits originating from these toolkits."With the ever-increasing, web-based criminal activity, the number of exploit toolkits has skyrocketed and shows no signs of slowing down," the report stated.Though protecting against attacks originated with web exploit toolkits is becoming increasingly difficult, there are ways to minimize the risk of infection, said the report, noting that one of the most effective defenses is to install patches onto host systems. The report also found that while the number of attacks against known vulnerabilities continues to rise, the number of discovered vulnerabilities has plateaued in 2010."We've discovered that rather than investing resources to uncover new exploits, attackers are focused on current, unpatched vulnerabilities in web applications, social networking sites and Web 2.0 interfaces," Mike Dausin, a manager at HP Digital Vaccine Labs, said in a statement.Data from the report showed that nearly half of all reported vulnerabilities exist in web applications, and third-party plug- ins to content management systems have become the leading cause of web application vulnerabilities.

BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature on Friday ended its bimonthly session, adopting a series of bills including a law on vehicle and vessel taxation, which is aimed at standardizing taxation and promoting environmental awareness and energy efficiency. The National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee also voted to adopt an amendment to the Criminal Law which reduces the number of crimes punishable by death by 13 to 55.Moreover, it passed the country's first law on intangible cultural heritage protection, which is expected to better preserve heritages of historic, literary, artistic or scientific value. At the session that opened on Wednesday, lawmakers validated the dismissal of Liu Zhijun from his post as the railways minister and appointed Sheng Guangzu, the former head of the General Administration of Customs, to replace Liu.The discipline watchdog of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said on Feb. 12 that Liu was under investigation for alleged "severe violation of discipline," while the CPC Central Committee's Organization Department said he had been removed from the post of the ministry's Party chief.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said at the closing of the bimonthly session that the democratic rights of NPC members should be fully respected and guaranteed during the upcoming NPC plenary session. On Friday afternoon, the members of the NPC Standing Committee attended a lecture on China's water conservancy development.

WASHINGTON, March 24 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday approved the use of Zostavax, a live attenuated virus vaccine, for the prevention of shingles in individuals 50 to 59 years of age. Zostavax is already approved for use in individuals 60 years of age and older. In the United States shingles affects approximately 200,000 healthy people between the ages of 50 and 59, per year. It is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is a virus in the herpes family and the same virus that causes chickenpox. After an attack of chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in certain nerves in the body. For reasons that are not fully understood, the virus can reappear in the form of shingles, more commonly in people with weakened immune systems and with aging."The likelihood of shingles increases with age. The availability of Zostavax to a younger age group provides an additional opportunity to prevent this often painful and debilitating disease" said Karen Midthun, director of FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in a statement. ( Shingles is characterized by a rash of blisters, which generally develop in a band on one side of the body and can cause severe pain that may last for weeks, and in some people, for months or years after the episode.Approval was based on a multicenter study conducted in the United States and four other countries in approximately 22,000 people who were 50-59 years of age. Half received Zostavax and half received a placebo. Study participants were then monitored for at least one year to see if they developed shingles. Compared with placebo, Zostavax reduced the risk of developing shingles by approximately 70 percent. The most common side effects observed in the study were redness, pain and swelling at the site of injection, and headache, according to the FDA.Zostavax, manufactured by Merck & Co., was originally approved on May 26, 2006, for the prevention of shingles in individuals 60 years of age and older.
