A federal judge in New York on Wednesday will field another clash over House Democrats' pursuit of President Donald Trump's financial records. The hearing, regarding subpoenas sent to two banks that handled Trump accounts for years, comes the same week that a judge in Washington, DC, said an accounting firm would have to comply with a subpoena from Congress, knocking down Trump's legal challenge within days of hearing arguments in the case. Trump's legal team appealed on Tuesday, but the Memorial Day subpoena date still stands because the appeals court has not yet intervened.A major question is how long Trump's challenges will take to proceed through the courts -- and whether the President could delay the subpoenas through his 2020 re-election campaign. The two court cases over House subpoenas, running closely in tandem, represent a major attempt by Trump to prevent Congress from reaching his personal and business records. The House of Representatives has also requested Trump's tax returns from the IRS, and Democrats in the House and the Senate are pursuing another court case that may allow them to look into the President's business records for signs of foreign influence. In the New York case, the House Financial Services and Intelligence committees requested a large swath of Trump family and business records from Deutsche Bank and Capital One bank in April, saying they need the records to consider banking policy revisions and to investigate the President's financial tangles with foreign powers, such as Russia.Trump's private legal team argues that the records requests violate his and his family's privacy and have no legislative purpose. The judge in New York, Edgardo Ramos, an Obama appointee, is unlikely to make a final ruling during Wednesday's hearing, which begins at 2:30 p.m. It's also not clear yet whether the judge will want to handle the case in stages, as is typical -- a tactic the judge in DC rejected, as it would have effectively allowed Trump to further delay his accountant's response to the subpoena. 2057

A gunman is on the run after killing two people in a car on a Houston freeway as horrified motorists watched during the Thursday evening rush hour, authorities said.Police initially got a call of an accident at 5:55 p.m., but when they arrived seven minutes later, they found a shooting scene. The fatal incident started as a crash involving two cars headed eastbound on Interstate 10, Houston Police Assistant Chief Bobby Dobbins said Thursday evening at a news conference."One of the vehicles struck the other vehicle and spun it out ... similar to a pit maneuver," he said, according to video of the news conference tweeted by Houston Police.Gunman fired as the car rolled downhillTwo occupants of the vehicle that rammed the other car got out, Dobbins said. One had a weapon. The gunman, described by a witness as a Hispanic male, fired multiple rounds at the car that had been rammed, pursuing it as it rolled down a hill, he said.Police found narcotics in the car of the two victims, both middle-aged black men, Dobbins said without further identifying them."Road rage? An accident? Narcotics? We just don't know, yet so I won't speculate," he added. One witness, who had a pistol in his car, fired several rounds when he saw the shooter turn toward him, Dobbins said. It's unclear whether the first gunman was struck by a bullet. He ran back up the hill, got into his car and sped away, Dobbins said."We don't have a good description of the (shooter's) vehicle," he said. "We believe it was a sedan, but we cannot tell you the model yet."Journalist describes an 'unreal scene'Daniel Gotera, a journalist for local station KHOU, heard the gunshots and saw people fleeing, he said."Unreal scene just witnessed on I-10 in Houston," he tweeted. "A guy gets out of his car with gun just shooting in the middle of freeway. Unbelievable."Witnesses provided CPR to the car's occupants until authorities arrived. Houston police urge anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward. That part of the freeway was still closed midmorning Friday for investigation. 2072

A frightening bank scam now allows thieves to get right into your checking account, and even savvy people are falling for it.All they need is:Your cellphone numberA bank account that is compatible with the Zelle money transfer system. You assuming that it's really your bank on the phoneIt just happened to one man in Ohio, who showed how thieves can now con their way into getting thousands of dollars from your checking account.Damon Lander runs a university biology lab. As a university employee, he's not the type of person who would fall for a phone scam — until this one."The other evening, I got a phone call from what I thought was Fifth Third Bank," he said. With his caller ID showing his bank's number, Lander answered the phone, and immediately worried when the caller explained he was with the bank's fraud department."He told me they had detected fraud in my account, and they were going to help me take care of that, and set up security measures, and take care of the fraudulent charge," Lander said.It all sounded perfectly legitimate. So he did what the phone rep instructed, such as entering a verification code on the log-in page on the bank's app.The caller promised to lock the account, and issue him a new debit card. Lander thought everything was taken care of.But within a few minutes, Lander says, he got a strange text from the bank."My user ID had been removed," he said.A few minutes later, he got more alerts from the bank, and that's when he really started to worry."They changed my username, my password, my card PIN and set up a Zelle account."Scammers open Zelle accountLander had never used Zelle before, but it is a money transfer app similar to Venmo that is automatically offered to customers at almost a dozen big banks around the country, including Bank of America, Key Bank, Chase and Fifth Third.Suddenly, Lander watched helplessly as another text alerted him that his brand new Zelle account sent ,000 to a disposable cellphone number."They transferred funds to someone I've never met before," he said,Panicking, he called the bank's customer service number, where he learned the bank had not initiated any fraud call.In fact, to Fifth Third, it appeared that he had made all the changes to his account since he entered a verification code that essentially gave the keys to his account to a scammer. Why this scam is so worrisomeWhat's scary is that this scam doesn't require a thief to gain access to your ATM card or a blank check they found somewhere, as bank theft required in the past. All it takes is a text or call claiming to be from your bank's "fraud department" and they can get into your account. Once there, they can now use Zelle to quickly get money out of it. 2727
