From the middle of the Obama administration to the midpoint of the Trump presidency, household income grew the most in tech and entertainment centers like Austin, Texas; Nashville, Tennessee; and large chunks of the West Coast.Congressional districts that attract highly educated workers around areas like Denver and Charlotte, North Carolina, were among the communities that saw mean household income rise the most from 2013 to 2018, according to new figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.Other congressional districts that had the highest household income growth were in or around Houston; Pittsburgh; Provo, Utah; parts of South Florida and the wealthy retirement haven of Sarasota, Florida.Most of the income growth in these areas came from wages, said Mark Vitner, a senior economist at Wells Fargo Securities.“Metro areas tied to technology have tended to perform best, although global gateways and energy markets had their moment in the sun earlier in the decade,” Vitner said.Household income grew more in Democratic-leaning districts than Republican ones, according to an Associated Press analysis of the data by congressional districts. Household income grew by an average of more than ,000 in Democratic-leaning congressional districts, compared to more than ,000 in Republican-leaning districts.What impact that has going into the 2020 elections remains to be seen, experts said.“Surely new evidence of income level rises in coastal and more highly educated districts relative to others plays to the Democrats’ strength,” said William Frey, a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution. “But it also makes clear they need to redouble their efforts to court non-college voters in less prosperous districts in the run-up to the 2020 election.”The greater income growth in Democratic-leaning districts likely had to do with the fact that they’re in cities where incomes tend to be higher, Vitner said.“Republican districts tend to be more rural and have lower wages,” he said.In some areas, the growth in household income was enormous. In House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s district, located in San Francisco, the epicenter of the last decade’s tech boom, household income jumped by a third from almost 0,500 to more than 0,000.In other areas, income growth was significantly more modest.In the district that covers Huntington, West Virginia, average household income only went up 5% to about ,500. From the outside, the chaos and screaming from the kids room at this YMCA in Burlington Kentucky, seems pretty normal.But in the world of COVID-19, it’s anything but.“The world has really changed and is changing by the minute,” said Jorge Gomes, director of Greater Cincinnati YMCA.The Greater Cincinnati YMCA took the call to action and is closing down other operations to focus on childcare for parents who can’t work from home, especially those on the front lines fighting this pandemic.“We have opened childcare centers specifically to help and support those individuals that are hospital staff and first responders," said Gomes. "Our intent is to give these kids a safe fun environment while they’re families are saving the world."Childcare is going is a big deal while the country weathers the storm. Normally, during working hours, parents rely on the school system for that, among many other things.No one knows that better than Kathy Burkhardt.“Our schools don’t close," she said. "We’re open until 6 in the evening; sometimes beyond that. We provide summer feeding, summer care, after school care."Burkhardt runs the Erlanger-Elsmere School District (EESD). She and her staff aren’t changing anything while school is out. The school will continue to feed children. “Three of our schools are open right now for breakfast and lunch,” said Amanda Ponchot, nutrition director for EESD.Additionally, the school district is checking on students struggling with their mental health issues.“Our counselors are still checking in with our high-need kids, everyday,” said Amber Evans, youth services coordinator for the district.And making sure kids have a place to stay.“We typically serve about 300 students [experiencing] homelessness,” said Shelly Warner, the Families in Transitions Coordinator at EESD.These are just many of the things that our education system is tasked with handling, coronavirus or not.“We see our role as making sure students are successful, and if all you’re doing is focusing on what’s happening from 8 to 3, then you’re not really doing all you can do for children and families,” said Burkhardt.All of the district's actions are helping in times like this, especially the meals for families who are preparing for the worst.“We're trying to ration our food, so we’ve created like a little sign out snack sheet, so they're allowed two snacks a day,” said Nina Vogt, a mom with three kids at home from school. But the spirit of the community is strong, and its members think by working together they can help keep families and kids safe and fed.“There is some simplicity with just simply walking away for a couple of weeks and some extreme complexities when you think about trying to launch a whole new idea, but this is what we do," said Gomes“Stay calm. You can do this and reach out to people in your district or in your community to help you, because together we can do so much more than we can alone,” said Burkhardt. 2966
From grinding gears to tightening brakes, working on bikes can be intimidating and emotionally deflating for some people.Nkenna Onwuzuruoha says she feels at one with the world while riding on two wheels. When it comes to actually fixing her bike, however, she’s a little less confident.To help learn the tools of the trade, Onwuzuruoha comes to the Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective on Wednesday evenings during WTF Night, a program offering a safe earning environment for women, transgenders and femmes. And the idea is to give those groups a safe place to work in.“Oh, I love it,” Onwuzuruoha says. “It’s a great place for women, trans, and femme folk to work and not feel intimidated or frustrated.”WTF night has been happening in Salt Lake City, Utah since 2002. Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective Workers say it’s now becoming a nationwide movement with more bike shops across the country hosting events geared towards helping these groups. “It lets women and those that have normally had a wrench torn out of their hand or have been degraded as, ‘Oh, I’ll do that for you,'--it really allows them to build confidence to be able to maintain their own bike,” says Kendra Davis, a Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective volunteer.Davis and her team say they are helping put the power back in the hands of people who may feel marginalized by men in bike shops. Attendees say what’s equally as important as gaining this hands-on education is learning how to be an ally of these groups.“We’re here together supporting each other in a way that is not normally seen I think,” says Maniessa Raza. “That’s why I choose to come specifically tonight rather than any other night.” 1681
For the second time in less than six months, a brand-new Boeing aircraft has crashed just minutes into a flight.All 157 people on board the Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa that crashed on Sunday morning have died, the airline has confirmed.The tragedy follows the Lion Air flight that went down over the Java Sea in late October, killing all 189 people on board.There is no suggestion yet as to what caused the latest disaster, and no evidence that the two incidents are linked in causality.What is known, however, is that both flights took place on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 -- a new model recently unveiled to great fanfare by the US aviation giant, that saw its first flight less than two years ago."It's highly suspicious," said Mary Schiavo, a CNN aviation analyst and the former Inspector General of the U.S. Transportation Department. "Here we have a brand-new aircraft that's gone down twice in a year. That rings alarm bells in the aviation industry, because that just doesn't happen."Adding to concerns are some similarities between the two flights. Both were operated by well-known airlines with strong safety records -- but the Lion Air flight went down 13 minutes after take off, while Sunday's Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed just six minutes into its journey.And while the Ethiopian Airlines did not see the wild fluctuations in altitude that the Lion Air flight saw, it did dip and then regain altitude before it crashed."The similarities with Lion Air are too great not to be concerned," Schiavo said.Data from flight recorders awaitedAt the root of October's Lion Air crash was a new safety system installed in the MAX 8 plane, known as the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), that automatically pulls the plane's nose down if data suggests it is at risk.In that flight, the system was responding to faulty data that suggested the nose was tilted at a higher angle than it was, indicating the plane was at risk of stalling.The pilots subsequently engaged in a futile tug-of-war with the plane's automatic systems, trying to reverse a nosedive that should not be triggered so soon after takeoff. Boeing has argued that pilots should have identified the system was in operation, and turned it off."All pilots should have been trained on that function after Lion Air," Schiavo added. "Boeing did something very unusual for any manufacturer -- it sent out an emergency bulletin and told all airlines to make sure they trained the pilots in the shut-off procedure.""This is one of the things that should never be happening after takeoff," Schiavo said.It is too early for conclusions to be drawn as to whether the same issue occurred on the Ethiopian Airlines flight -- but a clue could come sooner rather than later."We will not get a final determination for two or three years, but we will get information from the flight recorders -- which I'm guessing will be fairly easy to retrieve -- in a matter of weeks," said CNN anchor Richard Quest, who specializes in aviation."At the moment, it seems a coincidence" that both disasters occurred on the same aircraft, Quest said. "But I'm guaranteeing to you that the authorities will be examining just how close a coincidence, and whether there are common circumstances between the two," he said."Two brand new planes have crashed from two respected airlines," Quest added. "Ethiopian is a very, very well-run airline. There is no safety issue on Ethiopian Airlines."Possible repercussions for Boeing If investigators do uncover a similar cause of the two accidents, the repercussions for Boeing could be dramatic."The Lion Air flight was a big deal for Boeing, but they managed to overcome it," Schiavo says. "They put out the emergency warning about training, and the industry went on. With the second one, I don't think everybody's going to forget."The MAX 8 could be grounded if a link is found -- either by the company itself, or by governments, though the former is more likely to come first, Schiavo says. "The voluntary basis is always the better way to go -- but it will be expensive for Boeing."Airlines with MAX 8 aircraft in their fleet -- and those with outstanding MAX 8 orders -- are likely to be watching developments closely in the coming days and weeks.According to 4284
