SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County has seen two flu deaths and more than twice the unusual number of illnesses so far this season, health officials reported Wednesday. County Health and Human Services officials said the number of confirmed flu cases is more than double the past three-year average, putting this year on par with the severe 2017-2018 flu season. Seventy-seven San Diego County residents died of flu complications last season. Almost 10,000 became ill. More than 235 cases of flu were confirmed by Sept. 28, compared to 67 at this time last flu season. “People should get vaccinated now to avoid getting sick and infecting others,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available throughout the region.” The flu shot is recommended for everyone over six months old. It takes about two weeks for immunity to develop, according to health officials. Anyone who needs the vaccine and does not have health insurance can go to a County public health center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan announced Monday a motion to reduce thousands of marijuana convictions.The motion asks the San Diego Superior Court to reduce 25,000 marijuana convictions, ranging from felonies to misdemeanors, and dismiss another 1,000 misdemeanor convictions completely.“We’ve been a leader in the state and pro-active on giving individuals with marijuana convictions the opportunity to move forward with their lives without a conviction that may have been negatively impacting their lives by restricting their employment or housing,” said Stephan. “This latest motion is the continuation of work that began more than two years ago. But according to the DA's office, officials have actively been reducing or dismissing eligible marijuana cases under 2016's Proposition 64, which legalized recreational cannabis. Since 2016, the DA's office says it has reduced or dismissed more than 1,600 marijuana-related convictions.Under Prop 64, sections regarding cultivation of marijuana, possession for sale of marijuana, and sales and/or transporting marijuana — all felonies — qualify for resentencing. The video shows a protester being taken away in an unmarked van as one officer warns her family around her not to follow them or he will shoot. Thursday at around 9:30 pm, a young woman is handcuffed on Park Avenue. Moments later, she is snatched off the street and taken away in the unmarked police vehicle. "She said somebody took Shayla; like somebody came and took her," the woman's mother, Breann Piccini, told ABC 10News exclusively. Piccini's mother said Shayla and her cousins spent the day at a massive protest in Downtown San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County is working to make it easier for San Diegans to get flu shots, which health officials say is especially important this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.On Thursday, local leaders kicked off efforts to promote flu vaccinations. Over the course of the next few weeks, they will be hosting pop-up clinics across the county where people can get free flu shots.The pop-up clinics are designed for those who don’t have insurance or those who can’t get the vaccine from their health care provider or pharmacy.Valentina Christiansen came to one of the clinics to get flu shots for her family. She said, “I think it’s great because I tried to go through our health plan and that’s over a month out, and we wanted to get it sooner. We heard about the opportunity and we’re excited to be able to do that.”Dr. Denise Foster, chief nursing officer for the county, said getting the flu vaccine can also help in the battle against the coronavirus. Keeping flu patients out of the hospital frees up beds and resources for those fighting COVID-19.“The flu vaccine can prevent the flu and prevent people from seeking health care services that might be needed right now connected to the pandemic,” Foster said.Foster added there are more people that have gotten the flu vaccine this year in comparison to this same time last year.
