SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who fled from officers near Hoover High School Wednesday led police on a meandering, roughly 45-minute road chase, running stoplights and driving the wrong way on one-way streets before pulling over near Lindbergh Field and making a failed attempt to escape on foot.The man drove off when patrol personnel approached him at about 12:15 p.m. to check on his welfare in response to a report that he appeared distraught while sitting in a white Chevrolet Malibu parked in the 4400 block of El Cajon Boulevard in the Teralta East area, according to San Diego police.The fleeing motorist, whose name was not immediately available, traveled over various mid-city streets before heading west on University Avenue through City Heights, North Park and Hillcrest.Early on in the chase, the driver ran over a spike strip laid out by police in his path, winding up with at least one flat tire on his car, Officer Tony Martinez said.After crisscrossing streets near Scripps Mercy Hospital, the man -- who appeared to be talking on a cellphone throughout the pursuit -- headed south on Fifth Avenue, driving against light traffic on the one-way northbound thoroughfare.Reaching downtown San Diego, the motorist crisscrossed the busy urban center for about 15 minutes, often driving at slow speeds, blowing through red lights and traveling in the wrong direction on one-way streets as police cruisers and an SDPD helicopter tailed him and officers placed more spike strips ahead of him.Eventually, he proceeded west through the Cortez Hill and Little Italy districts on B Street, then north on Pacific Highway, at one point driving onto a sidewalk to evade the pursuing police personnel.Just after 1 p.m., the fleeing man drove into a car-rental lot near San Diego International Airport, pulled over, jumped out of his vehicle and ran off into a parking garage.Officers gave chase and got the man into custody following a brief struggle, police said.No injuries were reported. 1998

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Arizona man who carried out a series of knifepoint rapes in the city of San Diego 24 years ago will be sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison early next year following his guilty plea to six rape counts.Christopher VanBuskirk, 47, of Goodyear, pleaded guilty Monday to threatening the victims with a knife while sexually assaulting them on four occasions between August and November of 1995, according to San Diego police.Deputy District Attorney Martin Doyle said Vanbuskirk also pleaded guilty to two knifepoint rapes committed in Riverside County in March 2002 and November 2004, with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office giving San Diego County prosecutors jurisdiction over those two cases.RELATED: Man accused of sexually assaulting six women since 1995 faces 190 yearsVanbuskirk is slated to be sentenced Feb. 20.Prosecutors said the four San Diego cases occurred twice in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, once in Pacific Beach, and once near San Diego Mesa College. Gavin Newsom announced Monday the state will send .7 million to support San Diego's proposed purchase of two hotels to provide more than 330 rental housing units for San Diegans experiencing homelessness.The funds -- part of the state's Project Homekey -- will go toward the purchase of the Residence Inn Hotel Circle and Residence Inn Kearny Mesa, to be considered by the San Diego City Council in October.The purchase of the two properties would create 332 permanent supportive housing units, with 72 of the units having two bedrooms, enough to provide housing for more than 400 individuals. According to a city statement, the units were determined to require minimal work before people could move in. The Hotel Circle property was built in 2003, while the Kearny Mesa property was built in 1990 and underwent a renovation in 2013."San Diego has proven we can put state dollars to action on programs and services that reduce homelessness," said Mayor Kevin Faulconer. "We have the real opportunity to house hundreds of individuals with these two hotels, and the Project Homekey grants will go a long way toward achieving that."RELATED: City of San Diego to buy hotels for permanent housing for the homelessThrough the Project Homekey program, the state is making 0 million in grant funding available to local public entities in California, including cities, counties or housing authorities. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who beat his estranged wife to death with a commemorative baseball bat as she delivered food to him at his City Heights apartment was sentenced Friday to 16 years to life in state prison.Dana Marion Davis, 56, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to second- degree murder in the death of April Davis, his spouse of more than 30 years and the mother of his six children.The defendant beat the 51-year-old victim with a wooden bat on the afternoon of Oct. 7, 2017, then prevented a family member and police from entering the apartment, said Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt. When officers finally gained entry, she was found dead on the floor.Davis told Judge Michael Smyth that he was remorseful for killing the mother of his children."She didn't deserve this," the defendant said before he was sentenced.To his children -- three of whom were present in court -- Davis said, "I am deeply sorry for the pain I have caused you."A psychologist determined the defendant suffered childhood development trauma that affected his relationship with his wife, Deputy Public Defender Amy Hoffman told the judge.When talking to police after the murder, Davis was "clearly in shock" as to what happened, Hoffman told the judge. The attorney said alcohol was involved in the fatal encounter.According to Marquardt, the defendant was on probation for domestic violence when he killed his wife. The two had been living apart.The prosecutor said the defendant had been violent with the victim in the past, having been convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence in 1994 and 2016.When the defendant was convicted of punching his wife in the head in 2016, he was also prosecuted for choking his teenage daughter, Marquardt said. 1749
