WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General William Barr defended the aggressive federal law enforcement response to civil unrest in America as he testified for the first time before the House Judiciary Committee. He pushed back against angry, skeptical Democrats who said President Donald Trump’s administration is unconstitutionally suppressing dissent. The hearing, held Tuesday as the late civil rights icon John Lewis laid in state steps away in the Capitol rotunda, highlighted the wide election-year gulf between the two parties on police brutality and systemic racism in law enforcement, which Barr argued does not exist. Massive protests have sparked unrest across the nation following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police and calls for reform have grown louder.Tuesday's hearing is part of a series of hearings in which Democrats on the committee are holding to investigate what they say has become a politicized department. In his opening statements, Barr referred to an investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign's ties to Russia as "bogus" and asserted that he acts independently of President Donald Trump and his administration. He also addressed ongoing protests across the country and the Trump administration's use of federal agents to restore peace. (KGTV) -- A man who detained two juveniles before taking their skateboards while posing as a sheriff’s deputy was sentenced Monday.  Abraham Joseph Nava, 24, was sentenced to three years of formal probation after pleading guilty in July to felony false imprisonment.In a separate case, Nava also admitted to calling in a false report of a bomb threat. Nava was given credit for 149 days in custody.RELATED: Guilty plea from man who posed as deputy, detained juveniles  He will have to comply with counseling conditions as required by the probation department, including a forensic examination to help determine what course of treatment to take, said Deputy District Attorney Peter Estes.Nava was arrested on June 14, several days after the sheriff’s department was contacted about a suspect claiming to be an undercover deputy.During interviews with several employees in the Main Street area of Vista, investigators learned that the suspect passed out fake business cards and was interacting with juveniles.Investigators also learned that the two juveniles were detained and had their skateboards taken. After identifying Nava as the suspect, investigators obtained a warrant to search his home where they discovered several pieces of San Diego County Sheriff’s Department uniform items, including badges.A box of fraudulent business cards was also found. VISTA (CNS) - An Oceanside man who allegedly fatally struck a pedestrian in a crosswalk while fleeing from another crash was charged Friday with murder, among other charges.Wesley Stuart, 27, was also charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit-and-run and drunken driving, and faces 15 years to life in state prison if convicted of all charges stemming from the Tuesday night death of 65-year-old Tran Thanhminh of Oceanside.Police said the initial crash was reported shortly after 10:15 p.m. Tuesday at Douglas Drive and Mission Avenue.RELATED: 65-year-old man killed, driver arrested in Oceanside hit-and-runInvestigators believe Stuart was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup and was speeding eastbound on Mission, ran a red light and collided with a Ford F-150 pickup that was northbound on Douglas, Oceanside police Sgt. Rick Davis said.After the crash, the Chevy driver backed up and headed east on Mission, where he struck Thanhminh in a crosswalk, dragging him about 150 feet down the street, the sergeant said.Thanhminh, who died at the scene, was with his wife at the time, though she was not struck, authorities said.The couple had just closed their restaurant for the day and were walking home when he was hit, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, which stated that his wife had already crossed the street when she heard the crash, but did not see her husband when she turned to look into the street.Stuart allegedly continued on Mission before getting out of the pickup at Rancho Del Oro and fleeing on foot with a passenger, Davis said.Officers searched the area with the help of a police helicopter and apprehended the two outside Stuart's home, Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said.Stuart was arrested.
