SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Most above-ground power lines in San Diego may soon be gone.The City of San Diego has an aggressive plan to move the lines underground, and they want your input at a meeting next week.People in Ocean Beach aren’t looking forward to the headache during construction, but can’t wait until the power poles are gone.Wayne Samuel works at Ozzie's Import Auto in Ocean Beach. The process to move utility wires outside his business underground has already begun.“So far they’ve taken underground connections from building to power grid,” said Samuel.A map of the plan shows there are 1,000 miles left to transfer underground. The city plans to bury 15 miles a year.The project will be funded by a surcharge on your SDG&E power bill that you’ve been paying since 2002. The city says you won’t see an increase in your bill, even though the price tag is in the billions.The reason for going underground? Fire safety and aesthetics.“I think it’s a good idea getting billboards and power lines out of the visible view of the public,” Samuel said.Arthur Harral has lived in Ocean Beach for more than 40 years. He’s dealt with the pre-construction and paid for the surcharges, but doesn’t mind.“It’s a wonderful deal. In some states across the country, in Colorado, they have them underground, and I’m all for it in San Diego,” said Harral.Construction will last 18 to 36 months. Once the new underground utility lines are in place, the city will install curb ramps, replace street trees, and repair damaged pavement.A public meeting about the plans will take place downtown next Tuesday at 5:30 in the Auditorium at the San Diego Public Utilities Department located at 9192 Topaz Way. 1707

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police have identified a man who was fatally shot in the Midway District this week, prompting a standoff with the suspect of the murder in North Park.San Diego Police received a report of the shooting just before 11 a.m. Sunday in the rear parking lot of the 24 Hour Fitness at 3675 Midway Drive. Police arrived to find 27-year-old Alexander Mazin of San Diego suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.Despite medial aid at the scene, Mazin died at the scene.RELATED: Fatal shooting leads to standoff between police, suspect in North ParkFollowing the shooting, police were led to the intersection of 30th Street and Upas St where an hours-long standoff began.Once SWAT teams entered the apartment, however, they did not find the suspect — identified as 41-year-old Ernesto Castallenos Martinez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One young man was named the newest recruit of the San Diego Police Department Wednesday.SDPD's newest officer, five-year-old Liam, was sworn in by Chief David Nisleit as part of a ceremony hosted by the department and Make-A-Wish San Diego.Liam, who was born with a congenital heart defect, began his first day on the beat soon after his ceremony. He and his partner received a call to help capture a bank robber. Bank of America also partnered with Make-A-Wish to offer up a location for a bank robbery and arrest scene, where the two cops took in the suspect.Liam and his partner then returned to police headquarters to interview the suspect.The Make-A-Wish event was held just one day before the department celebrates its 130th anniversary. 770

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect Tuesday they say threatened a woman with a gun in an hotel bathroom. According to police, the incident happened in a bathroom at the Hilton on the 4200 block of Taylor Street in Old Town.Police say the man threatened the woman with a semi-automatic gun.Initially a man who matched that description was detained after a short foot chase. Police say he ran for unknown reasons but was quickly released when they determined he was not the attacker.Authorities describe the suspect as a black man in his mid-20s who is five feet, eight inches tall, was wearing a gray shirt, tan pants, a light colored backpack and has short hair.The suspect is wanted for brandishing a weapon, battery and assault with the attempt to commit a sexual offense. 806
