Gun policy has been a longtime devise topic but not usually a top issue among Latino voters. That is until this election.A recent research study found 7 out of 10 Latinos voters want stricter gun policy.In El Paso, Texas, a mass shooting that left 23 people dead and several injured has caused people to pay closer attention to gun policy and take a stance.On Monday, we ran into Adrian Loera at Sportsman Elite. Loera was at the gun store practicing shooting his gun at the range.“You never know when something is going to happen,” he said. “That is one of the reasons why I got my handgun license, because of the events that happened here last year.”Loera is referring to August 3, 2019, when a gunman drove hundreds of miles to an El Paso Walmart, with the sole purpose of killing Latinos.Last year's shooting changed a lot for El Paso. It robbed the community of a sense of security they once felt. Loera says he never thought about owning a gun before and now not only does he own a gun, he wants to make sure no one takes away his right to do so. His new beliefs would influence his vote this coming election.While Loera’s views on gun policy have changed, the same horrible event had quite the opposite impact on Miranda Escobar Gregory. As she stands in front of the newly erected memorial for all 23 of the victims, she recalls the paralyzing fear she felt the day of the shooting. She says the entire city was locked down for hours.“It’s not a need to have a giant machine gun or semi-automatic gun when you are just playing it safe,” said Escobar Gregory.She wants assault-style guns to be banned at the federal level and a mental health screening as part of the purchasing process. In Texas, you can buy a gun as long as you pass a criminal background check.Critics of a more restrictive purchasing process say there are other tactics that should be considered.“Another law preventing or trying to prevent law abiding citizens from getting access wouldn’t have changed the outcome of that day,” said Richard Garcia, the director of training at Sportsman Elite.Garcia says he is a proponent of decreasing all types of violence but feels as a nation, we need to get to the core issue of why these things keep on happening.“I think we should be moving towards the actual root of the problem, which does back to the individual. What can we learn from the person who did this so we can prevent something like this from happening in the future,” said Garcia.Garcia says conversations need to be had and arguments need to be worked through so that we can come to a compromise on how to best address the issue.“I know there is no such thing as a perfect compromise, but that is what the laws in the books are for,” said Garcia.Escobar Gregory says she will continue to fight for stricter gun policies and vote for those who will support her wishes. Meantime, people like Loera, who fear his right to own a gun might get a little more difficult, are rushing to get a license to carry and purchase a firearm. 3018

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Several dozen students interrupted an event featuring actress Jenna Fischer at DePauw University Tuesday to protests recent racial incidents on and near campus.Many of them held signs with things claiming they are "afraid for their lives" after recent events. Fischer, star of the sicoms "The Office" and "Splitting Up Together" was at the university to discuss her new book, "The Actor's Life: A Survivor's Guide."University Spokesman Ken Owen, who was moderating the lecture with Fischer, said about 15 minutes into the program a group of students got up and began interrupting the event whistling, shouting and saying they were afraid for their safety on campus because of the recent racial incidents. Last week, a hateful message was found written in a bathroom at the university. The message, which read " All ******* must die -KKK," was written on a bathroom wall of the Inn at DePauw, a public building on campus. Another anti-Semitic and homophobic messages were also found. The video above was captured during the Tuesday evening protests by Shannon Samson. Another event being investigated by the university involves a hateful slur written in rocks at the DePauw nature park, which is owned by the university. Owen said there was a meeting with the school president Tuesday over the events and that have happened up until that point and they expect more meetings in the future. DePauw University issued the following statement on social media after the event.  1573

GARDEN GROVE (AP/CNS) - Mexican authorities say a United States couple missing for a week in Tijuana have been found buried on the property of one of their homes in Tijuana.Baja California state prosecutor Hirán Sánchez said Friday that the bodies of María Teresa López and Jesús Rubén López were discovered with the help of cadaver dogs. Authorities said they have arrested and charged the couple's son-in-law. Officials say the preliminary investigation suggests the motive was a monetary dispute over rent payments. The couple had crossed the border to collect rent payments for apartments they own in Tijuana."I don't have confirmation these are our victims,'' Garden Grove Police Department Lt. Carl Whitney said. "[Tijuana investigators] have not talked to our detectives."Investigators in Mexico have been tight-lipped about the investigation. But Whitney said he has seen reports from Mexican news sources that during the execution of a search warrant on the couple's property Friday, they found the bodies buried in a patio or courtyard area.Lopez and Guillen drove a pickup to Tijuana last Friday to collect rent from tenants at properties in Mexico, Whitney said.The two were due back last Friday afternoon, but when their daughter could not get in touch with them, she called police about 7:10 p.m. last Friday, he said.The daughter was tracking the two through a "find my phone'' online service for iPhones, and it showed that the couple was still at their Tijuana property, but a relative there said they weren't around, Whitney said. GRAND BLANC, Mich. - A 17-year-old is in trouble with Michigan State Police and, most likely, his parents after being clocked doing 138 miles an hour on I-75 in near Grand Blanc.The incident happened at around 8:45 p.m. on November 23.Troopers clocked the 2012 Chevy as it was in the left lane of Northbound I-75. Troopers say the driver tried to "duck off" onto E Holly Road but was caught by the trooper.According to MSP, the driver said he was "traveling so fast and passing other cars and sucking in and out of lanes" because he was late for his 9:30 curfew.MSP says the trooper "gave the kid a break" on a reckless driving charged, but did give him a ticket for going 138 mph in a 70 mph zone and "the SMH award."His ticket carries an unknown fine and four points. 777

Gina Haspel was confirmed Thursday to be the first female director of the CIA with the help of votes from a half-dozen Senate Democrats.Haspel was confirmed in a 54-45 vote, the culmination of a roller-coaster nomination that appeared to be in danger at several points after she was abruptly selected by President Donald Trump in March.Three Republicans opposed Haspel's nomination: Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Jeff Flake of Arizona and John McCain of Arizona, although McCain did not vote because he's battling brain cancer at home.But Haspel secured enough votes to win confirmation with the backing of six Democrats, including Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee.Most of the Democratic votes in favor of Haspel came from senators who are up for re-election in November in states that Trump won in 2016, including Sens.
