SAN DIEGO — The race between two Democrats vying to become San Diego's next mayor is neck and neck, according to a new scientific poll. The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll shows State Assemblyman Todd Gloria leading City Councilwoman Barbara Bry 39 percent to 38 percent, with 24 percent undecided. The results are well within the SurveyUSA poll's 5.3 percent margin of error. The race is even closer now than it was a month ago, when a similar poll showed Bry leading Gloria 37 percent to 34 percent, also within the margin of error. While both are Democrats, the poll showed Bry getting a majority of her support from Republicans and Independents, while Todd Gloria retained a lead among Democrats. "Barbara Bry is talking about neighborhood issues and slowing down the growth of San Diego, whereas Todd Gloria is talking about addressing housing and doing some growth," said Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego. "That finds a political divide over growth that often separates moderates from liberals, or Democrats from Republicans even though both of these candidates Barbara Bry and Todd Gloria are both strong Democrats."Gloria took home 41 percent of the vote in the March primary, with Bry coming in second with 23 percent. She beat out Republican Scott Sherman by 1,189 to get into the top-two runoff, and his voters appear to be supporting her. SurveyUSA's poll shows 46 percent of Republicans voting in the mayor's race are supporting Bry, while 46 percent of independents voting in the race also plan to support Bry. Meanwhile, 24 percent of Republicans and 27 percent of independents voting in the race are supporting Gloria. Gloria's support is coming mostly from Democrats, with 53 percent of members of his own party planning to vote for him, compared to 27 percent for Bry. The remainder are undecided."There are different shades of blue within this city and this mayoral race is all about deciding what kind of Democrat San Diego will be governed by," Kousser said. In a statement, a spokesman for Gloria said they were focused on November 3. “The only poll that matters is Election Day," he said. "Our campaign will continue working hard to reach every San Diegan in every community and to earn every vote.”Bry's campaign also released a statement, saying the results were in line with their internal polling, showing the race in a dead heat. "We’re confident once voters understand the very real differences between the candidates – on issues ranging from protecting residential neighborhoods to re-starting our local economy and being independent from City Hall special interests – that we will prevail on November 3," the statement said. The poll surveyed 547 likely voters and was conducted between Oct. 1 and Oct. 5. 2762

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The mother of a U.S. Navy veteran from California sentenced to 10 years in prison by the government of Iran said Tuesday he has lost his appeal and she is worried that he is being forgotten by the U.S. government.Michael R. White was convicted of insulting Iran's supreme leader and posting private information online. He was the first American known to be imprisoned in Iran after President Donald Trump took office. Few other details are known about his case.Joanne White, speaking through a family spokesman, said she was disappointed Trump did not mention her son or other Americans held in Iran when he spoke to the United Nations General Assembly.RELATED: Wife of Imperial Beach man arrested in Iran recalls suspicious behaviorFamily spokesman Jonathan Franks said Joanne White has not had any way to communicate with her son and she relies on officials with the Swiss government who meet with him when possible. She wants to ask the Iranian government to let him call her. The White House has not contacted her, he added."I think her feeling is it is now time for his case to get as much attention as those in which the president has successfully brought people home," Franks said.Trump has secured the release of a dozen Americans held hostage or unjustly imprisoned overseas since taking office.Franks said Michael White, 46, recently had surgery to remove melanoma and his mother is concerned about his health, especially in the poor conditions in which he is being held in Iran.ORIGINAL STORY: Navy veteran from Imperial Beach being held in IranThe family has been raising money through a GoFundMe page to send to the Swiss government to get him adequate food, Franks said."We're exploring all opportunities and continue to hope that President Trump will personally show interest," the family's attorney, Mark Zaid, said in an email to The Associated Press.Joanne White said her son, who lived in Imperial Beach, California, went to Iran to see a woman she described as his girlfriend and had booked a July 27 flight back home to San Diego via United Arab Emirates. She filed a missing person report with the State Department after he did not board the flight. She said he had been undergoing treatment for a neck tumor and has asthma.White worked as a cook in the U.S. Navy and left the service about a decade ago.It remains difficult for Americans to get visas to Iran, 40 years after the Islamic Revolution and the U.S. Embassy hostage crisis, but Franks said Michael White traveled there legally with one.Others being held in Iran are:— Iranian-American Siamak Namazi and his octogenarian father Baquer, a former UNICEF representative who once served as governor of Iran's oil-rich Khuzestan province. Both are serving 10-year sentences on espionage charges.— Iranian-American art dealer Karan Vafadari and his Iranian wife, Afarin Neyssari.—Chinese-American graduate student Xiyue Wang was sentenced to 10 years after being accused of infiltrating the country while doing doctoral research on Iran's Qajar dynasty.— Nizar Zakka, a U.S. permanent resident from Lebanon who advocated for internet freedom and has done work for the U.S. government. 3185

Sad news, coconut water fans. Coca-Cola is stopping production of Zico, according to multiple reports. It’s part of ongoing efforts to slim down the company’s beverage offerings."This decision was not made lightly and comes at a time when we are focused on delivering on our consumers' wants and needs while driving scaled growth across a total beverage portfolio," a spokesperson said in a statement to CNN.Coca-Cola bought Zico in 2013, but it never seemed to catch on, according to media reports, like competitors have. Among them, Vita Coco has reported sales spiking during the pandemic. In March, some stores reported coconut water, touted as a hangover cure or post-workout recovery, flying off of shelves.Coca-Cola has nearly 500 brands around the world. This summer, they said they hope to cut that number by more than half. The company announced earlier this summer it would discontinue Odwalla smoothie drinks and other “zombie brands,” or those not showing growth.A spokesperson this week told media outlets other brands that are being reconsidered include Diet Coke Feisty Cherry, Coke Life and pulling Hubert’s Lemonade from retail stores. They are also looking at discontinuing regional soda brands like Northern Neck Ginger Ale and Delaware Punch, according to the Wall Street Journal. 1308

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego was the site of the first big outbreak at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s 221 detention centers. The origins of the outbreak are uncertain, but in interviews with The Associated Press, workers and detainees reveal shortcomings in how the private company that manages the center handled the disease: There was an early absence of facial coverings, and a lack of cleaning supplies. Symptomatic detainees were mixed with others. Some workers at the center quit; the Mexican consul general, responding to complaints from detainees, raised concerns about how the facility handled the outbreak. One guard at the facility told the Associated Press employees were discouraged from wearing masks because it would frighten detainees and make them think they were sick.According to ICE, there have been 168 detainees at Otay Mesa that have tested positive since the start of the outbreak. Four detainees are currently under isolation or monitoring and one detainee has died due to the virus.ICE adds that 11 ICE employees have also tested positive at the facility.More than 30 CoreCivic workers have tested positive, the AP reports. 1196
