ORIENTAL, N.C. – A Navy veteran says his Chihuahua mix saved his life.Rudy Armstrong was on his houseboat in Oriental, North Carolina, when he suffered a stroke, according to CarolinaEast Health System.Luckily, Armstrong’s dog, Bubu, was there and sprang into action.“He and Bubu have a special bond and when Rudy couldn’t get to his phone to call for help, he looked his little friend in the eyes and said ‘I need help. Go get Kim,’” wrote the hospital in a Facebook post.Immediately, the hospital says Bubu ran off to get Kim, the area dockmaster, who called 911. They ultimately saved Armstrong’s life, with the help of paramedics and the staff at the hospital.On Aug. 7, the hospital says it was able to orchestrate a reunion between the veteran and “his best girl.” It was an emotional moment for everyone there. Armstrong, who has reportedly sailed all over the world and “has stories for days,” said he was very appreciative of the care he received at the hospital. 980

Of all the campaign slogans for 2020, Allison Ali is following motherly advice from her childhood.“My Mama always said, ‘if you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice,’” she said. “So, it’s put up or shut up.”Ali is taking those wise words on the road and also taking voters to the polls for free.“It’s important to me, because everybody needs to be heard,” she said.This election season, Ali is one of hundreds of people working for the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America during a campaign called “Roll to the Polls.”“We have a real opportunity to impact the elections,” said NACA CEO Bruce Marks.Marks’ team has 100 vans in Atlanta and 50 more in Houston with a goal of getting 100,000 voters from their houses to their polling locations free of charge.“It is very emotional because we’ve been through a lot,” Marks said of these free rides. “We’ve seen the voter suppression and we’ve seen how people’s rights are taken away. Not since 2005 has the Atlantic basin seen so many storms in a hurricane season. The year 2020 now eclipses the old record, with at least 12 of those storms making landfall this year in the U.S. alone.“Those two years are quite similar. They are anomalies,” said Lewis Link, a professor at the University of Maryland who studies hurricanes.An increasing number of hurricanes are becoming major ones, which means their wind speed falls into a Category 3 hurricane or higher.“Partially, it could be attributed to warming, higher sea surface temperatures, which are the fuel for generating hurricanes,” Link said.It’s not just coastal areas that bear the brunt of concern during hurricanes. More and more often, the effects from these storms may hit the coast first, but they are being felt far more inland and in many more states than ever before.A recent map put together by the National Hurricane Center showed all the counties impacted by hurricanes and tropical storm winds this year. The effects of those storms reached inland states like Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia and Vermont.Yet, the effects from these storms go beyond just high winds.“The biggest problem we have is with flooding, is inland flooding,” Link explained. "And some of that is attributed to tropical systems that continue to dump a lot of rain, long after they cross the shoreline.”That’s an issue, he said, because many areas don’t have the infrastructure in place to deal with the heavy, quick downpours that are associated with tropical systems.“Not only are they old, but they’re just not up to the task. That’s a serious problem. How do you change that?” Link said. “We’re not set up well to change our infrastructure based on changing conditions.”It is a change that may have some communities rethinking exactly what it means to be in a hurricane zone.While the official hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, occasionally some tropical storms do develop outside those dates, including some that formed this year in May.
