SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five baby foxes were rescued from a South Bay construction site after a worker spotted them below a pile of cement rocks set for destruction.A construction worker at an Otay Mesa work site alerted his manager to the a Grey fox and her five babies this week, before crews were set to break down the pile with a jackhammer, according to San Diego Humane Society.Humane officers responded and removed the large blocks over the den with the help of construction workers. The days-old babies — two males and three females — made it out safely, but their mother fled over the commotion.Officers tried to lure the mom with fox pup sounds and her babies to no avail. Monday morning, SDHS says they were able to trap the mother. The babies and mom were brought to SDHS's Project Wildlife center for care, before being transported to Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona. 894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Father of three boys, Ben Walrath, was excited when he heard baseball practice was starting up again."There's only so much Fortnite they can play," Walrath said, his son Austin, 10, chiming in, "before I get bored." "Before we have to do something different," Walrath continued.He had a talk with his boys about how practice is going to be different to protect them from coronavirus.When quizzed, his sons answered correctly, "no dugout during practice," Austin said. "Stay six feet away." Walrath reminded them, "we're not going to be doing high fives and stuff like that... and no games right away."While Austin wasn't enthused about the new protocol, he was excited to see his friends for the first time in months at practice Monday.President of Sweetwater Valley Little League Arturo Maldonado said they are rolling out practice in three phases. Monday was the beginning of phase one with kids ages 10-15. This weekend phase two will start for kids ages 7-10 and as soon as June 26 the youngest ball players ages 4-7 will get to come back to practice."Everybody's learning how things are going to be done out in the field and that's why we're doing it in three different phases so that we can make adjustments," Maldonado said.He said managers and coaches will be wearing masks, but the kids don't have to. He said the kids will be encouraged to socially distance.There won't be any hugging, high-fives, or sunflower seeds and hand sanitizer is always close by. The dugout will be expanded to the stands, Maldonado said, to accommodate for social distancing.Parents aren't allowed at practice yet and sick players are encouraged to stay home.Monday Walrath said the boys played wiffleball, just as they would any other day."We're not going to change the game of baseball. We're changing how we're watching the game of baseball," Maldonado said.Walrath said safety is a priority for every family. "There's always health concerns in sports, whether that's normal injury concerns. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighting cameras are blanketing California, shattering its goal of installing 650 cameras across California by 2022, thanks to the efforts of a UC San Diego professor and his team.The camera system, called ALERTWildfire, came from a need to confirm the ignition of a fire, and coordinate assets to be the most efficient and safe for the community.Geology Professor Neal Driscoll at UC San Diego is the Co-Director of ALERTWildfire and said just a couple of years ago it was a slow process confirming a fire sparked in the county."We’d have to send an engine to a mountaintop or launch an aircraft to verify ignition," Driscoll said.That wasted valuable time. ALERTWildfire allows fire command centers to find and assess a blaze with a few clicks on a computer.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said they look for key information from the cameras, "really just trying to hone in on where this fire is, what its potential is and who might need to be evacuated."The system launched in 2017 and now San Diego has 35 cameras across the county.The cameras pan, tilt and zoom on command and have a time-lapse function."The technology isn’t just good situational awareness, it’s also using that data and that information in real-time to evacuate people and save some more lives," Shoots said.Driscoll said they are continuing to grow the program, "locally I think we’ll cap out at 45-50."Shoots said they're working to grow to more than 1,000 cameras across the state by 2022 and Driscoll hopes to expand to other states like Colorado and Idaho.Driscoll advises the public to get familiar with the website, so in case of an emergency, you can be aware of your surroundings and evacuate safely.Driscoll also advised the public to RAP: Reduce risk, Activate your alerts, and Practice your plan.
