As we get closer to the end of this election cycle, voters will find many different fliers and postcards in their mailboxes.All sorts of groups and campaigns are trying to reach voters before November 3, so the mailers are not unusual. However, one voter in Kentucky got a postcard that didn't sit well with him. The handwritten postcard started with a simple greeting: "Allan, thank you for being a previous voter!"But the next few lines left the recipient, Allan Carr, feeling intimidated."Who you vote is secret, but who you vote for is public information," said the postcard. "After the election on Tuesday, November 3, local organizations may follow up with you on your voting record.""It didn't scare me, but I saw it as threatening," explained Carr. "So, I can see somebody else being threatened by it."Carr said he received the postcard about two days after he voted early."I didn't understand it a bit," said Carr. "I don't even know what side - which campaign - it came from."The postcard didn't come from a political campaign. According to the fine print on the front of the card, it was paid for by Indivisible Chicago Alliance. According to the group's website, Indivisible Chicago Alliance describes itself as "a group of Chicago-area residents alarmed by the 2016 election and committed to resisting the Trump agenda." According to its mission statement, the group "engages with public servants to create a just society by promoting progressive values and grassroots engagement."One of the group's projects is "Postcards to Swing States." They're using volunteers to handwrite more than 15 million postcards to voters in 14 swing states. Kentucky is on their list, and the group confirms 865,000 postcards were sent out to Kentucky voters."The messaging on our postcards is designed to encourage people to vote and uses language that has been tested and proven to do so," said Marj Halperin with Indivisible Chicago Alliance. "This is a nonpartisan message that does not ask or encourage anyone to vote for specific candidates."According to the frequently asked questions section on the group's website, volunteers can choose between two approved messages."Message A" is listed as a "social pressure" message. It is written to say: "Thank you for being a [previous/first time] voter! Who you vote for is secret, but whether you vote is public information. After the election on Tuesday, November 3, local organizations may follow up with you on your voting record."The message is very similar to what Carr received. However, unlike the approved message that should say "whether you vote is public information," Carr's said, "who you vote for is public information."Halperin said the group did not authorize the message Carr received."Unfortunately, this volunteer did not write our approved message, which is solely designed to encourage people to vote," said Halperin. "With many volunteers writing multiple cards, this would seem to be an error, resulting in a message that not only is contrary to our approved language but also doesn't quite make sense."The message on Carr's postcard is also untrue. Kentucky has a secret ballot system, so the Secretary of State is certain no one will know who a voter votes for unless that voter tells someone."Whether you're voting in-person or voting absentee, there's no way anybody knows who you voted for," said Secretary of State Michael Adams. "I don't know. The poll workers don't know, and certainly, some shady out-of-state interest group doesn't know who you voted for."While Indivisible Chicago Alliance says their postcard to Carr was a mistake, there are confirmed situations in other states where voters have gotten intimidating messages by other groups. In Kentucky, intimidating voters is illegal."A person cannot intimidate, coerce, or attempt to interfere with someone's right to vote," said Assistant Attorney General Alex Garcia.Garcia says the Attorney General's Office has received a complaint involving an intimidating message, and they're looking into it currently."That complaint received - the language that was used was really vague. It was from an out-of-state organization," said Garcia. "We are looking into it."Garcia encourages anyone who witnesses election irregularities or election law violations to call the state's election law violations hotline. Animal shelters across the country are taking part in a nationwide study that's giving animal lovers the chance to hang out with a dog.Participant Moira Hopkins loves a good happy hour. However, instead of getting a drink, Hopkins is picking up a dog at the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, D.C. She picks up a dog named Jackie, who is part of the shelter’s happy hour program. It allows volunteers to take dogs out of the shelter and hang out with them for a few hours to let the dogs escape from the stress of that environment. “You just sort of see the tension just dissipate,” Hopkins says. “A great happy is when they suddenly end up taking a long, long nap because they don't get good sleep in a shelter because it's noisy and chaotic.” The shelter is taking part in a national study by Arizona State University to examine how getting out of a shelter, even for just a few hours, can affect dogs. Workers at the Humane Rescue Alliance say they've seen how a short getaway can help lower stress levels and even make dogs more adoptable. “When dogs appear less stressed to a potential adopter, that makes adopters want to meet them because they're calm and they're lying in their den, rather than jumping around and barking and acting all stressed out,” says Jennah Billeter, who works at the shelter. The ultimate goal is for these happy hours to lead to happy outcomes. “It has really, really good outcomes for both the human and for the dog, because the human gets to have the love of a dog and enjoy them and sometimes maybe even end up adopting them, because they fall in love with them on a happy hour,” Hopkins says.For more information, visit the 1682

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, Long Island's largest, has filed for bankruptcy, according to the diocese.Reverend John Barres, the bishop of Rockville Centre, announced the "difficult" news in a letter posted on the diocese's Twitter account Thursday.Barres said the diocese filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code earlier in the morning.The bishop said the decision comes after more than 200 lawsuits alleging sexual abuse were filed against the Diocese of Rockville Centre in the year since the passage of the Child Victims Act. CA?ON CITY, Colo. – Thousands have come through the gates of the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility. But what happens when they walk out? The prison has dozens of programs meant to help the inmates become valued members of society. One program – involving dogs – is called the Prison Trained K-9 Companion Program. Lawrence Trujillo and Zachery Montoya are master dog trainers. They've have been training dogs at the corrections center for five years. “We are with these dogs seven days a week, 24 hours a day,” Trujillo said. They teach the dogs how to follow commands, and how to be on their best behavior. It’s a very coveted job. “Some of these guys haven’t seen a dog in 20 years,” Montoya said. However, getting into the program isn’t easy. “In order to be considered they actually have to apply for the job. They have to meet certain criteria – they have to have a GED – because we’re required them to read information and process it. And they have to be on their best behavior documented for at least six months," K-9 supervisor Michele Wayland said. According to Wayland, it takes about a year to achieve a master handler certification. “We get a dog buddy, and we learn from a master trainer. We go through about 14 months of book work, we have tests in their monthly – hands on tests with the dogs as we progress as trainers – and we have to pass each one of those tests to become a master trainer,” Trujillo said. The guys say they gain more than just life skills. They're also helping families who haven’t been able to effectively train their dogs. “Coming to prison is not so fun, but being able to give something back is very rewarding,” Montoya said. Since the program was created in 2002, inmates have trained nearly 13,000 dogs. A majority of them come from private families who help fund the program through boarding and training fees. “There is no taxpayer dollar supporting this program, so we have to float our own boat,” Wayland said. The program has seen a lot of success the past couple decades. Wayland says Colorado was one of the first, if not the first state to start K-9 training at prisons. Now, they're all across the country. “There actually is a K-9 program in prisons in every state of the union,” Wayland said. The positive results of the program can be seen in the inmates who are hired. “I didn’t have a lot of skills before I came to prison, so this is something I could definitely I could take with me and do out there. There’s been many guys who have left and have been successful doing this one the streets,” Montoya said. Whether working at a shelter, a kennel, or starting their own training business, both Montoya and Trujillo say they’d love to continue working with dogs once they get out of prison.
