OCEANSIDE (CNS) - Two vehicles crashed Saturday on College Boulevard underneath state Route 78 in Oceanside, killing at least one person.The California Highway Patrol reported a blue Tesla and red sedan collided at 3:04 p.m., causing one of them to overturn and land on its roof on College.Medics and officers from the Oceanside Police Department were on scene trying to extract the two occupants of the overturned vehicle, the CHP said. Officers were shutting down traffic in the area.A San Diego County coroner was at the scene of the crash to investigate, the CHP said.No further information was immediately available. 629

(KGTV) -- A World War II veteran got a big surprise Saturday morning when dozens of cars drove up to her Oceanside home to celebrate her 98th birthday.Corporal Jeri Marcot wasn't expecting too much on her birthday — maybe a call or two. ."I woke up this morning and said, 'Oh well, it's my birthday,' but wow, you made it a wow event!" Marcot said in amazement.With the help of Honor Flight San Diego, her family set up a surprise.She was taken to her birthday throne, and car after car, she waved to many of her friends and family."Today is great," Marcot's granddaughter, Janelle Stettler, said. "It's another way we are getting around the COVID restrictions where we're having a drive-by parade to celebrate her birthday,"The 98-year-old wears many hats: mother, grandmother, book worm, but also, one of America's first-ever female Marines."I was 18 when I went in the service in WWII, so that seems like a long, long time ago," Marcot laughed.Back in 1944, enlisting in the Marine Corps as a young woman was not the "cool" thing to do. Marcot says women were barely recognized as being part of the Armed Forces. But the aviation lover knew it was her duty. Since she had already taken flying lessons before enlisting, she ended up working on airplanes.Her two-and-a-half years in the service inspired people like Holly Shaffner, who served 24 years in the US Coast Guard."These women Marines, they lead the charge," Shaffner said. She now works for Honor Flight San Diego."We served, and it was great," Marcot said. "It was our turn to do that, so I'm happy I got the chance."Even after her military life, Marcot continued a life of service as a children's librarian until her retirement."She was always at the forefront," Marcot's daughter, Linda, said. "Forefront of the Marines, the forefront of starting a library in El Centro. [She's] one of these women that is an inspiration."She is such an inspiration that many of her fellow WWII veterans came by to thank her for her service and wish her a happy birthday."Look at all my friends," Marcot said. "Oh my goodness, you could write a book about all of this."Maybe when the Corporal returns to her usual peace and quiet life, the former librarian will get around to writing down her own amazing life story. ORLANDO, Fla. - A baby born at 22 weeks and weighing just 12 ounces is going home after spending six months at the Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies.Doctors said in a press release that baby Diana Peguero is the tiniest baby to ever survive and graduate from the hospital's NICU. Today, she weighs over 7 pounds and is currently thriving at home.According to the Orlando Sentinel, Diana's mother, Jomary Tavarez, was starting to dilate when she went in for a routine checkup in April at 20 weeks pregnant.Doctors then admitted Jomary to Winnie Palmer, and on Mother's Day, Diana was born weighing 12 ounces and was nine inches long.However, after examining her size and development, doctors believe Diana was younger than 22 weeks since gestational age is just an estimate.From May 10 to Nov. 6, Diana spent her first six months of her life in the hospital's NICU, but doctors said she never needed any life-saving surgeries.A few days after giving birth to Diana, doctors discharged Tavarez from the hospital, the newspaper reported. For six months, the couple traveled from their home in Ocala, Florida, to the hospital to see their daughter.According to the newspaper, doctors initially told Tavarez and her husband Federico that most babies, Diana's size, didn't survive the first three days, which Diana did.Diana's medical team continued to set more goals for Diana, which she continued to pass, the newspaper reported.By the end of June, her parents could carry her for the first time. In July, they got to hold her, the paper reported.Diana's parents are thrilled to finally take their first and only child home, especially for Federico, with her coming home a day after his birthday."It's a bittersweet day for us in the NICU," said Dr. Thais Queliz, a neonatologist at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer. "We're sad to see Diana leave since she and her parents have been with us for so long. OMAHA, Nebraska — The family of Nikko Jenkins wants answers as to why he was able to swallow a set of keys over the weekend while in prison.Sophia Jenkins, Nikko’s older sister, tells KMTV television station in Nebraska that she went to visit him at the NDCS Prison in Lincoln on Sunday but was not allowed to because he had swallowed a set of at least seven handcuff keys. He reportedly was strapped to a bed when he obtained the object before ingesting them.The NE Dept. of Corrections says Jenkins, a Douglas Co. safe keeper, was involved in misconduct resulting in injury. He was by the NDCS medical staff and did not require outside medical care.This is one of a handful of bizarre instances where the convicted killer has mutilated or harmed himself while at the prison. In the last year, Jenkins has cut his face, tongue, and mutilated his genitals several times with razors and other items. A badge was obtained off of a guard’s uniform to cut his genitals. "It really did it was disturbing, it was heartbreaking, it was unbelievable. I couldn't even imagine like really he swallowed some keys let alone seven keys? I don't even know how that happened,” Sophia said. "He's mentally deteriorating, my brother, and I feel that the mental health professionals are lacking with showing no compassion for their patients."He is currently confined 23 hours a day and is under constant surveillance, though his competency is still in question. He was ordered to go to the Lincoln Regional Center, the state’s only mental hospital, in August 2014 but they refused to take him because of safety reasons. LRC doctors have also concluded on multiple occasions that Jenkins is faking mental illness, while his defense team’s doctors have said he suffers from schizoaffective/bipolar disorder.LB 424 was a special investigation initiated by the NE Judiciary Committee to look into the handling of Jenkins before he was released from prison in August 2013.  Shortly after he was let out, Jenkins murdered Jorge Ruiz, Juan Pena, Curtis Bradford, and Andrea Kruger.The Nebraska Department of Corrections & Director Scott Frakes declined multiple interview requests by KMTV this week.State Senator Ernie Chambers says Frakes should resign because nothing has been improved and he’s overwhelmed with the job."But an individual who has been found to have mental problems of various kinds continues to engage in self mutilation in several instances it's done with equipment or material which belongs to a staff member out there or a guard. It looks to me like this is a scheme which is designed to result in that kind of activity.  When it happens this many times it establishes a pattern and any competent director of a department would never let it happen but the fact that it continues to happen. "He's (Jenkins) in a very narrow, restricted, supposedly always under surveillance location and these things continue to happen,” Senator Chambers described.In a written statement the NDCS said, “NDCS reviews incidents such as this to determine if policies and procedures are appropriate or need to be changed. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for NDCS staff and inmates.  We are committed to providing the best possible care and program opportunities for all inmates.”Jenkins is still awaiting a death penalty hearing.  A date has not been set. 3448

OAK PARK, Mich. — The city of Oak Park, Michigan will host its annual Boo Bash Halloween event next Wednesday, but they are not allowing anyone to come as a clown.On the event page, the city says people can bring children in their favorite Halloween costumes, collect candy down the trick-or-treat street and enjoy cider and donuts. They also say that clown costumes are not allowed.Oak Park Recreation Director Laurie Stasiak told the Oakland County Times the ban stems from fear and anxiety over clowns for some children."In the past few years, many clown costumes have been given a very scary and evil look. Many scary and horror movies are centered around these types of characters. About three years [ago] there were national incidents in the news where people were dressing up as clowns and scaring people and in some cases assaulting them," she told the Oakland County?Times. "Many people have phobias and anxiety about clowns. It’s because of this that we asked people not to dress up as clowns for this community event.” 1067
