BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares advanced to a five-month high Friday on the gains of gold producers and nonferrous metals.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 3.13 percent, or 83.09points, to close at 2,738.74.The Shenzhen Component Index gained 3.86 percent, or 442.83 points, to end at 11,911.37.Combined turnover stood at 283.42 billion yuan (42.43 billion U.S. dollars), up from 183 billion yuan the previous trading day.Gainers outnumbered losers by 814 to 41 in Shanghai and 1,025 to 47 in Shenzhen.Most Chinese stocks proved resilient Friday after the stock markets were closed from Oct. 1 to 7 for the annual National Day holiday.Gold producers rallied Friday after international gold prices hit a record during the Chinese holiday as investors sought an alternative investment to the U.S. dollar, which slid to an eight-month low against the euro on Thursday.Zijin Mining Group, China's largest gold producer, surged by the 10- percent daily trading limit to end at 8 yuan per share. Shandong Gold Mining, a big producer of gold based in east China's Shandong Province, rose by the daily limit of 10 percent to 61.46 yuan in Shanghai.Nonferrous metals also posted widespread gains after copper rose to 8,326 U.S. dollars per metric ton on the London Metal Exchange on Wednesday, the highest level since July 2008.Jiangxi Copper Co., the country's leading copper producer, jumped 9.9percent to 34.23 yuan per share while Yunnan Copper Co. gained 9 percent to 24.52 yuan per share.Other energy and raw materials stocks also rebounded Friday because of international commodity gains during the weeklong holiday.China Shenhua Energy Co., China's biggest coal producer, climbed 9.28 percent to 25.8 yuan. GUANGZHOU, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers combing the mud-slide debris found more than a dozen bodies Friday, bringing the death toll of typhoon Fanapi to 70 in south China's Guangdong Province, while 65 people remain missing, local disaster relief authorities said.The bodies were recovered after work crews entered towns cut off by mud-slides such as Magui Township in Maoming City, the provincial flood control authorities said.Helicopters were dispatched Friday to send relief goods -- bottled water, food, and tents, to floods-isolated areas in the hardest-hit counties of Gaozhou, Xinyi and Yangchun, the authorities said.About nine tons of goods have been delivered on Friday.By 6 p.m. Friday, about 99,500 people in Guangdong were evacuated for the Fanapi-brought disasters. Some 3,765 houses collapsed, 42,190 hectares of farmland were damaged, and the economic loss reached 2.4 billion yuan, latest official data show.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south.No casualties have been reported in Fujian.

BEIJING/FUZHOU, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- A plane chartered by the Chinese government flew 14 Chinese fishermen illegally seized by Japanese authorities from Japan to the southeast China port city of Fuzhou Monday afternoon, after China's repeated solemn representations.The fishermen were detained after the trawler they were aboard collided with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol vessels near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea last Tuesday. DALIAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday called on the young in Russia and China to pass on the friendship forged during World War II.Medvedev made the call in a meeting Sunday morning with more than 20 veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), part of WWII.The Russian leader, who arrived in the northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday morning, first laid flowers at a monument commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs.In the following meeting with Chinese and Russian veterans, Medvedev said Russians and Chinese forged profound friendship in their joint fight against the Nazis, and such friendship constituted the solid foundation for the relationship between the two countries.The Russian President thanked Russian and Chinese veterans for their contributions to peace.He also thanked China for renovating the memorial, which was one of more than 70 memorials commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs throughout China. All those memorials had been refurbished to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory of WWII.Dalian was the first stop of Medvedev's three-day visit to China. BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged Tuesday the European Union (EU) to objectively and fairly treat the RMB exchange rate issue as that would benefit the EU, China, and the world economy.Wen made the remarks while meeting the Euro Group troika, including Euro Group President and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn.The meeting took place on the sidelines of the two-day eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels as China is under external pressure to appreciate its currency.Wen said China would further reform its formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to increase the currency's flexibility.China's central bank has announced on June 19 a series of steps of reforms. The Chinese currency has so far strengthened by about 2 percent against the U.S. dollar.China would also continue to expand import from the EU and strive to balance the trade, said Wen, adding that China was committed to transforming its economic development pattern, restructuring the economy and increasing domestic demands.Wen called on both sides to develop healthy ties from a strategic perspective as the EU has become China's largest trading partner while China stands as the EU's important exporting market.As the world economy was gradually recovering with uncertainties still hovering high, China and the EU should work together to combat the international financial crisis, Wen added.The Euro Group leaders appreciated China's support for the euro and the euro zone, saying the EU and China were good partners and enjoy extensive common interests.They also said the EU rejected both trade protectionism and currency war, and agreed differences and problems should be solved by dialogues.In a speech to the Greek parliament on Monday, Premier Wen said China supported a stable euro and would not reduce its euro-bond holdings.The three Euro Group leaders also held talks with China's Finance Minister Xie Xuren and central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan here on Monday.
