President Donald Trump is expected to grant new authority to US troops on the Southwest border with Mexico to protect Customs and Border Protection personnel from migrants if they engage in violence, according to two defense officials and another US official directly familiar with the plans. An additional administration official tells CNN that the authority will also authorize protection of federal property.Currently troops do not have any authorities that would allow them to intervene if CBP personnel came under attack unless they need to act in their own self-defense.There are 5,800 to 5,900 troops assigned to the border mission.The move could be announced as soon as Monday evening, officials said. The mission will be characterized solely as "protection of CBP" personnel, according to the administration official.This comes as Department of Homeland Security officials said Monday that they had started to get information from "multiple sources including individuals in the Mexican government" of potential waves or groups of individuals who were discussing an incursion into legal ports of entry in California by attempting to pass through vehicle lanes.Any potential use of force by US troops to protect CBP personnel must be "proportional," the official said.It is expected the Pentagon and US Northern Command will amend the current document detailing the rules governing the "use of force" on the border mission.All three officials are adamant that the change is not abfut troops firing weapons at migrants crossing the border. Instead the new rules will be aimed at providing the basic authorities to allow for protective measures. Previously troops did not have any authorities that would allow them to intervene if CBP personnel came attack.The Pentagon has been working for the last several days on options for how troops can protect CBP.The defense officials are also emphasizing that National Guard forces activated by governors, as well as state and local civilian law enforcement authorities in a given area, should be relied upon as much as possible.DHS spokesperson Katie Waldman told CNN, "As Secretary Nielsen has said, we will not allow our frontline personnel to be in harm's way. We will do everything we can to protect those who defend our nation's sovereignty and secure our border. (KGTV) — Poway officials unanimously approved the use of outdoor space for fitness classes and religious services, after the state banned indoor activities at gyms and placed of worship this week.Wednesday, Poway City Council leaders voted to allow Poway park space to be reserved for fitness- or religious-related activities as part of the city's Sharing Outdoor Spaces, or "SOS," initiative. "Last week we offered restaurants a lifeline through the simple act of loaning picnic tables and the outpouring of support in Poway was overwhelming. POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - Family and friends are mourning the tragic death of a man in Poway this weekend. Thirty-eight-year-old Michael Walker died after a stray bullet hit him in the stomach as he slept early Saturday. It happened at the Sofi Apartment complex on Midland Road. Christina Walker said her husband was sleeping in the spare bedroom so his snoring wouldn't wake her. "All of a sudden, I heard this loud thud, and I didn't know what it was, I ran out of bed, I thought he fell and he was just standing there and I don't think he even knew what was happening, but he was just laying there in bed and got shot," said Walker. She said they didn't realize what had happened. "I'm looking and I'm just seeing this hole in his stomach and then I look over and there's a hole in my wall," said Walker. She rushed him to the hospital, but he died around 3 a.m Saturday ."I think we were still just disbelief, really not knowing, you just don't think, we don't have a gun, it's not like either one of us has ever been shot before, you just don't think, why would you think you have a bullet in you?" said Walker. "Until I heard that they got the person, I couldn't even cry until then, not really, and then I just lost it," said Walker.The Walkers were married less than three years. Christina describes her husband a kind and gentle man. "When I say and stress just how amazing he was, he didn't even know how amazing he was, he was always there when somebody needed him, he was very compassionate, he was an incredible human, he just poured out love for me, and I just hope that I was able to give that to him," said Walker.Her husband worked at Jeromes.
