BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Tuesday that China would coordinate its national family planning policy, stabilizing an appropriately low birth rate and improving the quality of its population."The fact remains that China has a large population. The issue of population is always a major issue for China's social and economic development," said Li at a seminar marking the 30th anniversary of the Family Planning Association of China in Beijing.The government must solve the issue in a way that takes into consideration the whole picture of China's long-term social and economic development, he said.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded.The Chinese government adopted a family planning policy in the late 1970s which basically permits most urban households to have only one child.The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.Li said the government would make efforts to improve the quality of the population, optimize the population structure and spur the rational distribution of the people, so as to turn the pressure of the population into an advantage of human resources.He also said the government would launch measures to narrow the widening ratio of men to women and address problems arising with an aging population.The population aged at or above 60-years-old will top 200 million by the end of 2015, government reports showed.

YUZHOU, Henan, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a coal mine gas leak in central China's Henan Province has risen to 32 after six more bodies were found, rescuers said Monday.Some 300 rescuers are still racing against the time to search the five miners remaining trapped despite slim chances of survival as they were feared buried in coal dust.More than 2,500 tonnes of coal dust smothered the pit after the gas leak, which hampered the rescue, said Du Bo, deputy chief of the rescue headquarters.The rescue efforts, however, are speeding up after the underground transport, power and ventilation systems have been restored, said Du.The gas outburst happened at 6:03 a.m. Saturday when 276 miners were working underground in the mine in Yuzhou City. A total of 239 workers escaped but 21 were found dead and 16 were trapped.An initial investigation showed that 173,500 cubic meters of gas leaked out in the accident.The mine is owned by Pingyu Coal & Electric Co. Ltd., a company jointly established by four investors, including Zhong Ping Energy Chemical Group and China Power Investment Corp..

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Saturday wrapped up a fruitful visit to France, opening a new chapter in the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.With Hu's three-day visit to France, which started on Thursday, the heads of state and top legislators of the two countries have visited each other's country within one year for the first time.Earlier this year, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, visited China. TOKYO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Visiting China's special representative on Korean Peninsula affairs Wu Dawei said Tuesday that Beijing plans to put forward fresh measures to resume the stalled six-party talks at an early date.Wu made the comment to reporters after meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada, but he did not elaborate on what measures China will propose to bring Pyongyang back to the negotiation, which have been suspended since December 2009.Wu, who chairs the six-party talks involving Democratic People' s Republic of Korea and South Korea, China, Japan, Russia and the United States, said China needs to discuss the proposal with these member states and wants to hear their views about it.The Chinese envoy held talks with Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku after meeting with Okada.The Japanese side agreed with China that the stability and peace of the Korean Peninsula are in the interest of all parties concerned, and vowed to continue push forward the six-party talks. Both sides said they will work to restart the stalled negotiation as soon as possible.Wu arrived in Tokyo on Saturday for a four-day visit to Japan after visiting Pyongyang and Seoul.

WENZHOU, Zhejiang, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- At least 246 tourists remain stranded on an island in east China's Zhejiang Province Tuesday as tropical storms and a typhoon cut off ship ferrying services Monday, local authorities said.The tourists, including six Russians and 26 students, have to stay in hotels in Nanji Island, a popular tourist destination in Wenzhou City of Zhejiang, after local transport authorities suspended ship services Monday due to strong gales triggered by two approaching tropical storms and typhoon Kompasu.Officials have said that room charges have been cut by up to 86 percent, to 40 yuan (5.9 U.S. dollars) per day, for the tourists. Also, local government workers are trying to help the Russians solve visa problems and book new flight tickets.Ship routes are expected to reopen after the wind weakens.
