GUANGZHOU, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen fishermen were confirmed missing Thursday after a fishing boat on the sea near Shantou City of south China's Guangdong Province went missing, a spokesman of the Nanhai Rescue Bureau under the Ministry of Transport said.The spokesman said the boat "Yueyangxi96160" along with several other boats, were being used for fishing on Wednesday afternoon, but was discovered missing when the others returned to port.The bureau sent a search team out at about 4:15 p.m. Thursday after it received an emergency call from the other boats, the spokesman said.The rescue work is ongoing.

BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Industrial enterprises in China's 24 regions reported combined profits of 690.8 billion yuan (101.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter, more than double the figure of the same period last year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement Wednesday.The NBS did not provide reasons for the 102.6-percent profit surge. The figure was down 21.1 percentage points for the first two months of the year, the statement said.Analysts attributed the growth to a low comparison base during the first quarter of 2009 when the country's economic growth was dragged down by the global economic downturn. The economic recovery, backed by government stimulus measures, also helped lift profits.The People's Bank of China, the central bank, said in a statement last week that industrial production in the first quarter had accelerated and profits of enterprises continued to expand on growing domestic demand.Altogether 38 of the 39 major industrial sectors saw year-on-year growth in profits, with profits of the steel industry up 3,380 percent and those of the power sector up 1,540 percent, the statement said.

HARARE, May 31 (Xinhua) – The Communist Party of China (CPC) and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote political exchanges and cooperation between the two parties.This was disclosed by Wang Gang, vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee and member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, who is leading a high-powered delegation to Zimbabwe.Speaking during a meeting with Zimbabwean Vice President Joice Mujuru and senior Zanu-PF officials on Monday, Wang said the agreement will enable the two parties to consolidate relations and work together in exploring new ways to enhance ties."Guided by this memorandum of understanding for the next five years, our party-to-party relations will have a more in-depth development," Wang said, adding the MOU will see the two parties increasing high level exchange visits and sharing experiences."We very much cherish the friendship between Zimbabwe and China. JINAN, May 3 (Xinhua) -- A pipeline owned by China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) resumed operation Monday afternoon after it leaked 240 tonnes of oil in east China's Shandong Province.The company immediately shut down the cracked pipeline and blocked the leakage site after the leakage was spotted, said a spokesman with Sinopec.It recovered 220 tonnes of oil, which had leaked to nearby farmland and roads, the spokesman said.The leakage, which was discovered at 6:12 p.m. Sunday, occurred at a section of the Dongying-Huangdao pipeline near Jiulong Township in Jiaozhou City."The influence of the leakage on the farmland could be controlled within the minimum level," he said.Testing results from the local environmental protection authorities showed the leakage didn't contaminate the nearby water sources.An initial investigation showed the pipeline crack was caused by a digger driver who unauthorizedly excavated the earth above the pipeline to bury the waste at a construction site in Jiulong Township.Police are searching for the driver, who fled after the accident.
