(KGTV) - Suspected drug smugglers were rescued by U.S. Coast Guard crews this month after their vessel erupted into flames before sinking.Crews from the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO), the U.S. Navy ship USS Zephyr, and the Colombian Navy ship ARC "07 de Agosto" detected the high-speed vessel on April 7 in the eastern Pacific Ocean. As crews prepared to intercept the vessel, the suspected smugglers allegedly began abandoning their cargo and jumped from the boat as it caught fire.Crews rescued four suspected smugglers and spent 90 minutes extinguishing the flames."There was no doubt in our minds what needed to be done to salvage the evidence needed for a successful prosecution even if it meant laying Zephyr alongside a burning hull, with the intense heat and acrid smoke hindering our 90-minute firefight," Lt. Cmdr. Grant Greenwell, the commanding officer of the Zephyr, said. After putting out the fire, crews say they recovered about 1,080 pounds of cocaine. The four suspected smugglers were transferred to custody aboard the Zephyr. The suspected drug vessel was severely damaged and sunk as it was a hazard to navigation. 1195

(KGTV) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says voters who may be sick or in quarantine due to COVID-19 on Election Day should take steps when breaking quarantine to vote. The agency says that any COVID-19 patients who head out to vote should ear a mask, stay at least six feet away from others, wash their hands and use hand sanitizer before and after voting, and let poll workers know that they are sick when arriving at the polling location."Voters have the right to vote, regardless of whether they are sick or in quarantine. Voters who are sick or in quarantine should take steps to protect poll workers and other voters," the CDC says. The CDC also recommended that patients bring their own supplies to vote, including pens and sample ballots or registration forms. The CDC's recommendations for all voters can be read online. 850
(KGTV) - Did a welcome to KC sign really have a typo that turned the word "annually" into "anally?"No.The picture of it is a fake. The actual sign does say "Kansas City welcomes 25 million visitors annually." 220
(SAN DIEGO, KGTV) -- Ahead of next week's United Nations Climate Summit, 10News is taking a deeper look at the effects of climate change. Since 1900, global sea level has risen 8 inches, dramatically increasing the odds of coastal flooding and damaging floods from storm surge. According to Climate Central, nearly 5 million people live less than 4 feet above high tide across the United States, and scientists expect roughly another 2 to 7 more feet of sea level rise this century.Imperial Beach is one of the most vulnerable in California to sea-level rise as it experiences flooding during periods of extreme high tides and winter swell. 10News looked into a program designed to give people ample warning, called The Resilient Futures program. The goal is to create a flood alert system through a network of instruments to measure local wave and water levels monitored by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography giving scientists and emergency managers a 3 to 4 day head-start to help determine where extreme tides may occur."It is something people are concerned about, and they want to know how often is this likely to occur. As sea levels continue to rise, what’s the change and risk as time goes on.” says Mark Merrifield, the Director of the Coastal Data Information Program at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He goes on to say, “just like it helps to have a weather forecast if there’s going to be an extreme rain event or wind event coming up. More and more there’s going to be the value of an ocean flooding event.'A bouy is already two miles off the coast of Imperial Beach transmitting data back to scientists and they hope to one day expand the program to other beaches. 1696
