So, he works to make sure the voices of this tiny community aren’t lost in the massive landscape of southern Utah.“I think our voting system is designed to favor people who live in metropolitan areas, and on their way home, just walk a block or two to a polling place to cast their ballot there," he explained of America’s current methods of voting.Van Wetter works with the Rural Utah Project, which helps ensure those living off the beaten path have the same options as the rest of America.On a typical election day in Boulder, the only polling location in Garfield County is hours away."You have to drive two-and-a-half hours to the west to county seat, where you can vote in a courthouse," explained Van Wetter.The seclusion of life in this part of America makes voting by mail the preferred option.In fact, all of Utah has voted by mail since 2018. That year, the state saw midterm voter turnout rose by 52 percent.As many parts of America worry if the United States Postal Service (USPS) can handle all the ballots, Van Wetter fears in the most rural corners of the country, there is a larger room for error."You have to work in advance and be proactive to get your ballot in," he said.For those who worry a ballot could be lost or won’t arrive in time, they could be out of luck.“I don’t trust it. I think the votes can be screwed up big time when they all get counted so I don’t like it," said resident Larry Ripplinger, who has called Boulder home for decades.The only place to turn in your ballot by hand or vote in person is at the Garfield County Clerk’s Office, which is about a two-hour drive.“If you’re working, or maybe you’re an older person who doesn’t feel comfortable making that drive, it just means you don’t get your ballot turned in, and that’s happened more often than you like to hear about," said Boulder resident Peg Smith.The USPS is recommending voters nationwide turn ballots in at least a week before the election deadline.Van Wetter, along with The Rural Utah Project, wants local leaders to provide ballot drop boxes across Garfield County."It would enable us to drop off the ballot a day or two before the election," he said.Garfield County Clerk Camille Moore says the drop boxes likely won't happen for the election in the fall, citing confidence in years of mail-in voting. LITHIA, Fla. — A Tampa Bay teenager is thankful for the device on her wrist after suffering a scary medical episode at The Crossing Church in Brandon, Florida. "I didn't know what was going on at all and it was just out of the blue," Deanna Recktenwald said. A warning appeared notifying the 18-year-old that her resting heart rate hit 190 beats per minute. "It was alarming that the watch was telling us to seek medical attention," said Stacey Recktenwald, Deanna's mother. "I didn't even know that it had the capability of giving us that alert."Stacey Recktenwald is a registered nurse and did not initially question the accuracy of the watch's reading. Staff at a walk-in clinic confirmed the teen's rapid heartbeat. "I was surprised, it was right on," said Stacey.The Recktenwald's said the watch saved Deanna's life. After arriving at the emergency room, doctors at Tampa General Hospital soon discovered Deanna suffers from chronic kidney disease. Both kidneys are only operating at 20 percent and she will likely require a future transplant. "Instantly started to pray and thank God for her having that watch," said Tom Recktenwald, Deanna's father. The high-tech Christmas gift came to the rescue, uncovering a serious health problem that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. "Now that we have some answers to why this is happening we can prevent something major from happening down the road," said Deanna. Stacey Recktenwald recently wrote Apple to thank the tech giant for its life-saving feature.  1601

(KGTV) -- La Mesa businesses that were damaged or looted during protests that turned violent in late May can receive financial assistance through a special fund.According to the East County Economic Development Council, the La Mesa Disaster Recovery Fund “was created by the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce Foundation to help businesses damaged or destroyed in the aftermath of opportunistic violence and looting following peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstrations in La Mesa.”The fund raised ,000 on its first day, and then 0,000 by the second day. The fund has now reached nearly 0,000.Fund organizers said they want to be “fast, fair, and equitable” with the distribution of money to the affected businesses.A flat stipend amount will be distributed to each verified business starting the week of June 29. Three-quarters of the money will be distributed during this Phase 1.The remaining 25 percent will be distributed during Phase 2 (no exact date given), with the intention of closing the fund by the end of July.To be eligible to receive funding, businesses are being asked to upload photos of damage and include verification of the address and ownership through an online form.
