SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County officials created a Dia de los Muertos altar to honor the lives of 891 San Diegans who died from the coronavirus, and put a face and heart into the fight.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez championed the altar as a way to send a message."We wanted to honor those families and honor those lives lived and acknowledge the tremendous impact it's had, but also pay particular tribute to the impact that covid has had on the Latino community," Fletcher said.Saying more than half of those who died in the county are Latinos. This is extremely disproportionate considering only 30% of the population is Hispanic, according to the 2019 Census."When we start looking at the actual human toll and our relatives who have moved on now as a result of this virus it becomes more real and reminds us why it's so important to stay so vigilant," Gonzalez said.Vigilance is what Treasure Felder said would have saved her mom Ronda."She was our angel on earth and is now our angel in heaven, that's how we like to refer to her," said Felder. Felder says her mom was a social worker with the county, caring for foster youth and a strong woman in her 60s."She was never really ill, in the hospital, or hurt. Even if she had a little pain she'd always push through. So to see her in a place where she could barely stand up and also having to be put in a chemically induced coma was something that none of us prepared for." she said.She said she walked into her mother's room on July 4th and found she couldn't stand and was breathing heavily. She called an ambulance, even though her mother didn't want to go to the hospital, and never saw her again.Felder said her mother always had her hand out to help others and is so incredibly proud of how her mother led her life. She hopes sharing her story of pain and emptiness, now that her mother is gone, will stir others to take steps like wearing a mask and social distancing to stop the spread of the coronavirus.The altar will stay up through Tuesday morning. 2048

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Consumer spending in San Diego was down nearly .3 billion between February and April 2020, showing just how badly the COVID-19 pandemic crippled the local economy.Since stay-at-home orders began in March, SANDAG says taxable sales in the region dropped from an average of .3 billion to billion in April.The largest losses in the region were seen at apparel stores (an 83% decrease in sales) and restaurants (down 67%).On the other side, big-box retailers like Costco, Target, and Walmart have fared well, SANDAG says. Grocery stores and pharmacy, though, were actually down 10% in taxable sales. Home improvement sales were also up, likely due to stimulus checks, SANDAG adds."It is interesting to learn that grocery stores and pharmacy sales are actually down by 10%, while home improvement sales have spiked," said SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "We can assume that during the pandemic, people had more time to work on outdoor landscaping, gardens, and other home beautification projects. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Call them the ghosts of summer vacations past: two mostly empty cruise ships remain anchored off the coast of San Diego, waiting for the green light to resume operations as the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.Celebrity’s Millennium and Eclipse cruise ships have been anchored in San Diego since March, when the CDC suspended cruise ship sailings around the country March 14. That order has been extended to at least July 24.Several cruise ship companies have announced voluntary delays until September.After thousands of passengers disembarked from the Eclipse in late March, test results came back showing several passengers were COVID-19 positive.More than a month later, in May, 63 passengers remained quarantined on the Eclipse with hundreds of crew members.A third ship, the Disney Wonder, was anchored in San Diego for the first few months of the pandemic, but departed May 30, said Brianne Page, a public information officer for the Port of San Diego.For now, the Millennium and Eclipse are ghosts of their former selves. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Data obtained by ABC 10News showed there were more than 150 complaints made to 211 involving a Pacific Beach gym’s violations of public health orders.The data regarding The Gym was compiled starting April 8; overall, there were more than 9,300 complaints from that time period involving violations of public health orders throughout San Diego County.Troy Kahle said he and his husband have been members of The Gym, located on 2949 Garnet Ave., for more than 20 years. Kahle is also a COVID-19 survivor, and he said he’s not sure how he contracted the virus.Kahle has not been to The Gym since he went to the hospital. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say they are taking aggressive measures to contain a flu outbreak at San Diego's migrant shelter. At least 16 migrants have shown flu-like symptoms; all were recently flown to San Diego from Texas by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Three migrants tested positive with a rapid influenza test."In order to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease we've become more aggressive in treating everyone with symptoms, regardless of when those symptoms started," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, Deputy Public Health Officer for the County.RELATED: Flu outbreak sickens over 30 migrants at border centerBefore being admitted to the shelter, migrants undergo medical screenings.Migrants with flu-like symptoms are being isolated off-site in hotel rooms, along with their family members who are receiving preventative medicine.On Thursday, County Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Nathan Fletcher expressed their continued frustration with the federal government's handling of the migrant crisis.
