LUCIE, Fla. - The tourism industry is looking to bounce back after a tough spring and summer.One resort on the Treasure Coast is trying to appeal to people who want to mix business and pleasure with school.Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie, located along the St. Lucie River, is one of the few resorts in the country that offers all-inclusive packages.Now, they are starting new programs that have places for parents and children to get their work and school assignments completed.With many families now working and learning from home, Club Med wants area residents to consider a getaway without abandoning your responsibilities. WPTV Sophia Lykke, the general manager at ClubMed Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie, says the resort is working to attract families who can continue to work and attend online school. "We're open to anyone in the United States who want to make their way down to Florida," said general manager Sophia Lykke.She said they have set up two conference rooms that include one for kids to do their schoolwork.“We would have one of our mini club staff dedicated to chaperoning them. [They do ] not act as teachers but make sure they’re logged on [their computer] on time and doing their work," Lykke said. "We have a separate room for adults, which is basically like a working lounge where you can have coffee, snacks. If you need IT support, we have someone who can do it. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he would sign a pardon for suffragette Susan B. Anthony on the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.Susan B. Anthony was arrested in 1872 after she voted in a presidential election. She was arrested about a week later and eventually convicted of "knowingly, wrongfully, and unlawfully" voting without the right to do so. She was fined 0, a fine which she promised to never pay.While Anthony never did pay her fine, her conviction for voting illegally has remained on the books for nearly 150 years.Anthony died in 1906 — 14 years before the ratification of the 19th Amendment.Fourteen other women voted alongside Anthony in the election. President Donald Trump issued an executive order this week that states new federal buildings should be more like classical designs and “beautify public spaces.” The American Institute of Architects say they are “appalled” by the order.“President George Washington and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson consciously modeled the most important buildings in Washington, D.C., on the classical architecture of ancient Athens and Rome,” the executive order, titled “Promoting beautiful federal civic architecture,” states.It establishes a new council to advise the president on future federal buildings.The order says in the 1950s, government buildings were allowed to look more “contemporary” and created a “discordant mixture of classical and modernist designs.”“The new buildings ranged from the undistinguished to designs even GSA now admits many in the public found unappealing,” the order says.“New Federal building designs should, like America’s beloved landmark buildings, uplift and beautify public spaces, inspire the human spirit, ennoble the United States, command respect from the general public, and, as appropriate, respect the architectural heritage of a region,” the order continues. Then states that “classical and other traditional architecture” have “proven their ability” to “satisfy today’s functional, technical, and sustainable needs.”The American Institute of Architects has already come out in opposition of the order, saying the group “unequivocally opposes” the initiative. They also say they do not, “and never will, prioritize any type of architectural design over another.”“Communities should have the right and responsibility to decide for themselves what architectural design best fits their needs, and we look forward to working with President-Elect Biden to ensure that,” said EVP/Chief Executive Officer Robert Ivy, with the American Institute of Architects in a press statement. “Though we are appalled with the administration’s decision to move forward with the design mandate, we are happy the order isn’t as far reaching as previously thought.”The executive order applies to federal buildings including federal courthouses, agency headquarters, federal public buildings in the District of Columbia, and new federal public buildings that cost more than million.
