United Airlines announced Wednesday plans to return 25,000 flights systemwide during the month of August in hopes that more people will resume traveling. Despite the massive number of flights being added to the schedule, United said that it will only run 40% of the number of flights it ran in 2019 in August.Domestically, United plans on adding 600 flights, meaning it will run 48% of its US flights in August. United projects that only 30% of US flights will fly in July compared to 2019."We're taking the same data-driven, realistic approach to growing our schedule as we did in drawing it down at the start of the pandemic," said Ankit Gupta, United's vice president of Domestic Network Planning. "Demand is coming back slowly and we're building in enough capacity to stay ahead of the number of people traveling. And we're adding in flights to places we know customers want to travel to, like outdoor recreation destinations where social distancing is easier but doing so in a way that's flexible and allows us to adjust should that demand change."On Tuesday, Delta announced the addition of 1,000 flights systemwide in July. Delta said it reduced the number of flights in the US by 65% in July. 1208

TULSA -- More details are coming out about the woman who police in Oklahoma say brutally stabbed her 11-year-old daughter Monday night. Friends and family of Taheerah Ahmad said they are in complete shock that the mother could do something like this. Those close to Ahmad painted two different pictures of her. One picture is of a caring mother who loves her children in the public eye, and the other is an abusive, unstable mother inside of her home.“Whenever she would talk about her kids, everything was always positive. She never said anything crazy,” said a former coworker of Ahmad. The coworker, who didn’t want to go on camera with Scripps station KJRH in Tulsa, said she always seemed normal enough.“She would go out with us," the former coworker said. "She would have drinks with us. She just seems like a very nice person.”But as her coworkers got close to her, they said they noticed something was off and would start noticing little things about Ahmad. “I know she went by at least four different names,” a coworker said. Her coworker said whenever a shooting took the life of one of Ahmad's friends last year, Ahmad changed and became sad.Her coworker said she brought up her children all the time and always talked about them in positive ways. But neighbors said that’s just what Ahmad was telling her friends.RELATED: Suspect in Amber Alert, stabbing of daughter seen smiling after arrestMultiple neighbors, who also didn’t want to go on camera, said they often heard screaming from inside the home and said there was something eerie about the house. One neighbor even said several nights in the past week, he would see Ahmad performing what appeared to be rituals late at night around a fire.“I really don’t know if there’s any reasoning behind this, but I just hope whatever is wrong gets fixed,” the neighbor said. The mother is in jail on one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, two counts of child neglect and one count of arson. The 11-year-old’s condition is still critical.  2103

Vice President Joe Biden told reporters this week during a campaign stop in Pennsylvania that he would take a potential coronavirus vaccine even if it costs him the election.Biden’s comments come as questions are arising over the timing of a coronavirus vaccine as President Donald Trump continues to hint that a vaccine could be ready before Election Day – a claim many top health experts say is highly unlikely."We're going to have a vaccine very soon... maybe even before a very special date, you know what date I'm talking about,” Trump said on Monday.Biden in Pennsylvania expressed concern that Trump is undermining trust in the public health system. But conceded he too is ready for a vaccine.“One of the problems is the way he's playing with policy,” Biden said. “He says so many things that aren't true, I'm worried if we do have really good vaccine, people will be reluctant to take it. So he's undermining public confidence, but pray God, we have it. If I could get a vaccine tomorrow, I'd do it. If it cost me the election, I'd do it. We need a vaccine. We need it now."Although several vaccine candidates are in Phase 3 studies, leading public health experts suggest a vaccine would most likely be approved around the end of the year or early in 2021.In late August, the CDC told states to begin to prepare distributing a vaccine by Nov. 1. But Surgeon General Jerome Adams said that just because states will be ready to help distribute a vaccine on Nov. 1 does not mean a vaccine will be ready by then."We've always said that we're hopeful for a vaccine by the end of this year or the beginning of next year,” Adams told Good Morning America."We want to make sure states are available to distribute it," he added.Dr. Anthony Fauci, in an interview with NBC News last week, agreed that he believes a “safe and effective” vaccine could be ready by the end of the year."I believe that by the time we get to the end of this calendar year, that we will feel comfortable that we do have a safe and effective vaccine," he told NBC News. 2051

Utah Sen. Mike Lee announced Friday that he has tested positive for COVID-19.In a statement released on Twitter, Lee says he experienced symptoms Thursday morning and took a test on the advice of doctors. The Senator says his symptoms are "consistent with longtime allergies."The announcement comes just hours after the news that President Trump and the First Lady had also tested positive for the coronavirus. On Tuesday, Lee met with Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. The two sat in chairs that were distanced several feet apart but took a photo before the meeting in which they were closer together. He also spoke to reporters after the meeting, removing his mask in front of the cameras as most lawmakers generally do.According to NBC News, Barrett tested negative for COVID-19. (Stefani Reynolds/Pool via AP) Video taken at the announcement of Barrett's nomination on Sept. 26 showed Lee hugging and kissing other people while foregoing a mask. Lee says he took a test at the White House event and was negative.Lee, who is in Washington, DC, says he will remain isolated for the next 10 days."Like so many other Utahns, I will now spend part of 2020 working from home," said Lee in his statement. "I have spoken with Leader McConnell and Chairman Graham, and assured them I will be back to work in time to join my Judiciary Committee colleagues in advancing the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett in the Committee and then to the full Senate." pic.twitter.com/V3kSLogoDP— Mike Lee (@SenMikeLee) October 2, 2020 This story was first reported by KSTU's Jeff Tavss in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Associated Press. 1889
