SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An emaciated dog found Friday in Bandy Canyon remains in critical condition but has shown some signs of improvement, the San Diego Humane Society's animal care staff reported today.A county resident brought the 2-year old male pit bull mix to the Humane Society's Escondido campus after finding him extremely dehydrated and cold, with pressure sores on his hips and knees. Humane Society veterinarians are working to feed and re-hydrate the dog slowly so as not to damage his body in its current fragile state.According to the organization, it could take between seven and 10 days for the dog to turn a corner and begin to recover. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Thursday for help in identifying a motorist involved in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian last week in a Chollas Creek-area neighborhood.The 48-year-old victim was standing next to a parked vehicle along the west curb line of the 5300 block of Chollas Parkway shortly before 1 a.m. Friday when a dark-colored car traveling to the south at high speed on the wrong side of the street hit him, according to San Diego police.Following the fatal impact, the motorist stopped momentarily, then drove off, Officer Robert Heims said.The victim, whose name has been withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.Surveillance cameras captured images of the vehicle -- a four-door sedan, possibly a Lexus or Toyota with a lowered suspension. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - At least three vehicles were burned Wednesday morning when a carport caught fire in the parking lot of a Mountain View apartment complex, but firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to the apartments nearby, authorities said.The blaze was reported at 5:10 a.m. in the parking lot of an apartment building on Benfield Court, off South 45th Street between Ocean View Boulevard and Imperial Avenue, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Firefighters responded and found a carport engulfed in flames along with at least three vehicles in the parking lot, a SDFRD dispatch supervisor said. Crews knocked down the flames within 20 minutes and no adjacent structures were damaged.No injuries were reported.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 792

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who allegedly gunned down another man during an altercation in Lincoln Park pleaded not guilty today to a murder charge. Michael Ortiz, 31, is accused in the Nov. 7 killing of 25-year-old Eziquio Ruiz-Saucedo of National City. Ortiz faces 50 years to life in state prison if convicted of murder and an allegation of discharging a firearm in the killing.Police received reports just after 9 that night of gunshots fired in the parking lot of a shopping center at 300 Euclid Avenue, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said. According to the lieutenant, the men were involved in a physical fight and at some point, a handgun was brandished and both men were shot.At Ortiz's arraignment, Deputy District Attorney Jeff Dort alleged that Ortiz brought a gun to ``what was probably going to be a fistfight.'' The prosecutor said Ortiz was shot with the same gun used to shoot the victim, but did not elaborate on how that occurred.Ruiz-Saucedo died at the scene, and Ortiz was hospitalized with non- life-threatening injuries, police said.Ortiz was being held on million bail and his next court date is a Jan. 12 status conference. 1145
