(KGTV) - A San Diego-based rancher says their business has grown as the corporate meat industry struggles.In the past months, Doug Lindamood, of SonRise Ranch, says they've seen their ranch experience a surge in business.“Surprisingly, in an odd set of circumstances, we’ve had a ranch that’s been very successful during these times,” he said. He said their business has easily tripled since the beginning of the pandemic. They’ve seen more people seeking food safety, so they’re buying meat in bulk. The ranch typically sells about 10-12 half or full cows a year, but that’s recently increased to 10-12 a week. This boost comes as the industrial meat industry is hurting across the country. Lindamood said a handful of companies produce a majority of the meat in the U.S. and the big players have been hit with sick employees, causing closures and less supply. “Highly consolidated plants being affected by basically a pandemic which then has the potential to shut down a vast portion of our production,” he said. Lindamood adds this has been a ticking time bomb that needs to be addressed. “For every one of those small plants that shut down over the last 20 or 30 years, we lost a small piece of our soul with respect to connecting to our consumers,” Lindamood said. “We need not one or 10 of me — which there are maybe five or six of us in the Southern California region. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): In the wake of Starbucks and Disney doing away with plastic straws, environmental groups in San Diego want the city to do the same.The Surfrider Foundation is sponsoring a proposal that the San Diego City Council will vote on in September to require restaurants to only offer straws to customers who request them, instead of giving them out with every drink.They're also pushing for a ban on Styrofoam take-out containers.Natalie Roberts-Decarli, the Interim Executive Director of I Love a Clean San Diego, says her group wants people to be more conscious of the waste they create in their daily lives."Straws kind of fly around easily, they blow away easily, and they're not able to be recycled," she says. "So they end up in our landfills or just litter."At one ocean clean up event last year, I Love a Clean San Diego found 6,000 straws on the coast in just a few hours. Roberts-Decarli says plastic straws are always in the top ten items of trash they find."There's no perfect answer right now. Everyone is still trying to work together to come up with the best solution," she says.Many local restaurants have already taken that step. According to Surfrider, more than 100 restaurants in San Diego County are certified as "Ocean Friendly," meaning they follow a list of criteria for recycling and avoiding plastic. They compare it to the reusable grocery bag change that happened in San Diego over the last few years.However, not everyone supports the idea. SAN DIEGO, Calif. — As we work to manage the pressure of the pandemic, a new device could take away some of the stress.San Diego State University (SDSU) engineers, biologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and public health experts have worked together to develop a wearable device to detect early, remote detection of lung function abnormalities.“Knowing the current status of our health, I think that will give a lot of benefit," said Kee Moon, a researcher, and professor of mechanical engineering at SDSU. The size of a Band-Aid, the wearable device contains medical-grades sensors, collecting more than 4,000 data points per second. Placed on a person’s chest, it monitors heart and lung health, looking for problems in real-time.The device can detect abnormalities in the lungs before a person shows COVID-19 symptoms, alerting doctors before there’s a true emergency and hopefully preventing hospitalizations.By monitoring heart health, users can also get a better sense of their stress levels.“Understanding the level of stress you’re getting is important, as important as the other physical health monitoring," said Moon. Moon was already working on the technology before the pandemic to monitor other health conditions like asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, and lung cancer. But COVID-19 accelerated and pivoted the focus of the research.The team hopes to license the technology to a company that can produce and sell the device, likely at a price of around a few hundred dollars.“Seeing that would be a tremendous joy for me," said Moon.Moon is hopeful the wearable could be sold next year and that it will continue helping patients after the pandemic is over, delivering a sense of control in a time of such uncertainty. 1740
