Former President Barack Obama made a thinly veiled jab at President Donald Trump on Friday evening, saying it was wrong to use a position of power for attacking others as "enemies of the people and then suddenly pretending that you're concerned about civility.""I would like to think that everybody in America would think it's wrong to spend all your time from a position of power vilifying people, questioning their patriotism, calling them enemies of the people and then suddenly pretending that you're concerned about civility," he told a cheering crowd.Trump has repeatedly called the media "fake news" and "the enemy of the people." Following the discovery of multiple packages sent to people whom the President has spoken against as political enemies, as well as a suspicious package in CNN's New York bureau at the Time Warner Center on Wednesday, Trump tweeted Thursday that "a very big part of the Anger we see today in our society is caused by the purposely false and inaccurate reporting of the Mainstream Media that I refer to as Fake News." 1061

Former FBI Director James Comey sat down with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday for a wide-ranging interview that touched on President Donald Trump, the Russia investigation and...red wine."When you were fired, you say in the book that when it was over, you flew back on a plane to the east coast drinking Pinot Noir in a paper cup," Colbert said during a Tuesday afternoon taping of CBS' "The Late Show."He then pulled out the bottle of wine and two paper cups and made a toast with Comey."To the truth," he said.CNN was granted exclusive access to the taping of the interview, which is set to air in late night on Tuesday. "The Late Show" is Comey's latest stop in his book tour for "A Higher Loyalty," a new memoir that offers insight into his termination as FBI director by President Trump. The book, which officially went on sale Tuesday, is shaping up to be one of the biggest best-sellers of the year. Comey's publisher printed 850,000 copies to meet the expected demand from buyers."Of all the people to be fired by Donald Trump, my guest tonight is definitely one of them," Colbert said when he introduced Comey, who walked out on the CBS stage to a standing ovation. The two talked for more than 30 minutes with Colbert kicking off the conversation by asking Comey for his loyalty and if he has insight into the Russia investigation that isn't public yet."Yes," Comey replied."Can you tell me?" Colbert asked."Uh, no," Comey answered."Okay, drink some more wine," Colbert said. The conversation moved quickly and culminated in a lightning round of questions."What happens if [Special Counsel Robert] Mueller gets fired," Colbert asked. "Does the investigation go on?""I think most likely it goes on. I think you would need to fire everyone in the Justice Department and the FBI to stop that investigation," Comey replied. "I think it would be very hard to shut that down by firing [Mueller].""Well, it's hard to fire the FBI director, too," Colbert said."The Late Show" had some fun hyping the interview by tweeting out a mock promo earlier this week that parodied ABC News' ads for its exclusive sit-down.Colbert's promo used footage from Sunday's ABC interview and put Colbert in the seat of anchor George Stephanopoulos. It billed "The Late Show" conversation as Comey's "first interview since that other interview" and had Colbert "ask" Comey questions like "You have to choose one superpower. Is it invisibility or flight?" and "Are you a cop?"Comey will continue with his book tour on "The View" on Wednesday, "The Lead with Jake Tapper" on CNN and MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show" on Thursday and he will participate in a CNN town hall on Friday.Colbert's relentless mockery of the Trump administration has helped him top his rivals in TV ratings by a sizable margin. Ratings reports on Monday showed that Colbert averaged 4 million viewers in the first quarter of 2018, which amounts to a 20% spike compared to 2017 and a staggering 1.2 million more viewers than rival Jimmy Fallon. With numbers like that, it's not likely that Colbert is going anywhere. An audience member on Tuesday asked him ahead of the taping if he could have any job in the Trump White House, which one would he want."I don't think I'd be a good president, but I'd be a better president," Colbert said. "Just nothing in HR." 3353

For the first time, we are all about to experience a holiday season during a pandemic. Industry experts are reporting it will be drastically different this year, especially for holiday shoppers.“The traditional Christmas holiday sale season is pretty chaotic,” said Bill Thorne. “There's not going to be a whole lot of that chaos this year.”Thorne is with the National Retail Federation. He’s has gathered key insight into what the holiday shopping experience will instead be like this year.“It is going to be an entirely different experience,” Thorne reinforced. One of the biggest changes is that many retailers have reevaluated Black Friday traditions, starting with staying open on Thanksgiving Day.“There are a number or brands, large brand that have already announced they are not going to be open on Thanksgiving Day and I believe that is for a number of reasons,” explained Thorne. “Primary among them are to give those associates and employees an opportunity to be at home, be with their family, to celebrate the most important thing that they have, which is each other.”Some of the retailers that have announced they will be closed this Thanksgiving include: Best Buy, Boscov’s, Foot Locker, Home Depot, JCPenney, Macy’s, Target, Walmart, and Costco. Most of those retailers will reopen the day after and some will offer a “Black Friday” sale, but the shopping experience will still be very different.“I don’t believe the vast majority will be opening at excessive early hours,” said Thorne. "I think they are going to greatly discourage people from lining up and if there are lines, they will be socially distanced, you won’t be able to just storm the store.”The number of people allowed in a store will be limited, as many retailers report crowd control will be a huge focus on Black Friday and throughout the holiday shopping season. So much so that companies like Walmart, Target, and Home Depot are trying to reduce the crowds, nearly two months in advance, by offering major Christmas sales this month.“There are several brands that have indicated they are going to do Black Friday sales every Friday until Christmas,” Thorne explained. “You are going to hear retailers reinforcing the deals you would normally get post-Thanksgiving you are going to get starting tomorrow.”The National Retail Federation believes Black Friday sales spread over three months, versus one day, may not only be a safer shopping experience, but it may ensure shoppers actually get the gifts they want before stores potentially and abruptly close again. Another rise in COVID-19 cases has some cities mulling over that idea. 2623

Former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has been picked by President-elect Joe Biden to run the Energy Department, the Associated Press confirmed and was first reported by Politico. The department plays a key role in helping develop the technologies needed to fulfill Biden's pledge to move the country off fossil fuels.Granholm served two terms as Michigan's Governor and is experienced in dealing with the auto industry, which could be an advantage as the president-elect seeks to speed up the roll out of electric vehicles and the network of charging stations used to power them.If confirmed, Granholm would be the second woman to lead the department since its creation in 1977."She really worked very hard in 2016 to place herself as Energy secretary with the Clinton team," said Skip Pruss, the director of the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor, and Economic Growth under Granholm. "She’s really a student of the [energy] transition. If you were to ask me what was a limitation in Michigan, I would say that she was slightly ahead of her time."This article was written by Kellen Voss for WXMI. 1111

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A Fort Myers, Florida, parent says there is such a thing as being overly cautious when it comes to COVID-19 safety.Lexington Middle School told Sheila Gayle’s eighth grade daughter to quarantine for 10 days because of what they thought were COVID-19 symptoms. But, mom says it’s just “that time of the month.”Her daughter went back to school today, but not before taking a trip to see her doctor after she reported feeling tired. The district required her to either quarantine until October 23 or show proof that it wasn’t COVID-19.So, instead of dropping off her daughter at school Tuesday morning, Gayle had to visit to Physicians’ Primary Care for a doctor’s note saying her daughter’s menstrual cycle caused the fatigue.“This what it’s come down to, so every month I have to come when she’s on her cycle? It’s just ridiculous at this point,” she said.Gayle says Monday afternoon, her daughter told the school nurse she had just started her cycle and felt tired. No fever, no body aches, just tired.“Just to have fatigue, because you’re tired? That’s unacceptable,” said Gayle. The nurse gave the student a form, indicating her fatigue could be related to COVID-19.A spokesperson for the School District of Lee County referred us to their website, pointing out students can return to school sooner if a doctor proves symptoms are caused by something other than the coronavirus.Gayle said she had two options. Either quarantine her daughter, which would also mean quarantine her siblings enrolled in other Lee County schools, or take time off work and get the doctor’s note. She chose the latter, hoping she won’t have to go through this again next month.“I just feel like this whole system needs to be re-evaluated,” said Gayle. The district said as of now students are not required to quarantine if a sibling has COVID-19 related symptoms. Even though it may seem a bit extreme, a spokesperson for the district says they’d rather be safe than sorry. This article was written by Rachel Loyd for WFTX. 2027
