SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community members rallied Thursday to send a message to developers looking to build in Barrio Logan. This comes after a developer tried to bring an 80-room hotel to the area, but neighbors opposed it.Neighbors are worried the developers coming in would change the culture of the community. "I don't feel good at all. I think in the past, Barrio Logan has been assaulted and insulted," said resident David Heaney. "I'm afraid that they're going to go against the plan again, and there will be some kind of shenanigans where there the City Council will say it's done."Heaney has been living in his Barrio Logan home since 1998. It sits directly across from the proposed development site on Newton Avenue. Last summer, a developer wanted to put a hotel at the location, but due to opposition from the community, it will now be a mixed-use space. Community members say there is simply no room for a project like a hotel or other large businesses because of the lack of parking in the area. Neighbors must have parking permits to park in the area. 10News reached out to developer Douglas W. Hamm, who initially proposed putting a hotel in the space. He sent a statement that read, in part: "I conveyed that I have zero interest in trying to build a project in their neighborhood that the community is not supportive of, much less opposes. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the rescue is taking place on the 12000 block of Torrey Pines Park Road. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, people in San Diego are looking back at how companies in this city helped NASA achieve the historic flight.You could argue that, if not for San Diego, the moon landing would never have gotten off the ground, or landed safely on the moon.Ryan Aeronautical Company built the lunar radar system that helped guide the lunar lander as it touched down on the moon's surface.General Dynamics built the Atlas Rockets that took some of the flights into outer-space."They didn't take them all the way up to the moon with the Atlas, but they helped set the stage to move forward to doing it," says San Diego Air and Space Museum Marketing Director David Neville.The museum has an Atlas Rocket on display at Gillespie Field, towering above the skyline. It also has the Apollo 9 capsule at Balboa Park.One of the docents at the museum worked on the antennaes that helped the capsules stay in constant contact with mission control."I can bring people over here and point to it and say that's what I did," says Ronald Pitcher, who volunteers at the museum and was an engineer working on the Mercury capusule, the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. "It's a proud moment to be able to do that."Pitcher says he feels privileged to have played a small role in landing a man on the moon. He wishes the US had sent more people up."There's no question in my mind that we should go back," he says. "We should have done it when we had the technology and the poeple and experience and facilities in place."Saturday night, on the 50th anniversary of the landing, the Air and Space Museum will host a party to celebrate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Businesses in the Gaslamp District were evacuated Saturday due to a natural gas leak. San Diego Fire crews evacuated several business in the area of Fifth Avenue and E Street in the heart of the Gaslamp District. All streets within a one block radius, from F St. to Broadway and Fourth Ave. to Sixth Ave., have been blocked off. Police are asking pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area.No injuries were reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the temperature rises and more businesses, like movie theaters, are reopening San Diegans and people from neighboring counties are flocking to get a dose of normalcy."We sold out today which is great news for everyone, we sold out today very quickly." General Manager of Theater Box Donnie Eversole said.He said it was wonderful 'being home' back in the theater, "we haven't been in the theater for 90 to 120 days so it's like a new adventure."He said it helps that the week they opened, two blockbusters, Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Bill and Ted Face the Music, are screening.While they're capped at 25% Eversole said you can make sure you claim your seat by reserving online. They are working to add more showtimes while abiding by the new guidelines.Last time San Diego had sweeping reopenings, there was a huge spike in coronavirus cases. Eversole said they are doing everything they cna to prevent another spike, "every cdc guideline is followed to the letter, we do not bend, we do not break. We follow the rules because not only is our business affected, everyone else is and we want to make sure everyone is getting a fair shake and able to recoup some of the summer that's been lost."San Diego is the only lower tier county in Southern California with the ability to have so many re-openings, drawing attention from our neighbors.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher spoke at Wednesday's press conference, urging everyone to do their part to prevent another spike, "One of the most dangerous settings is indoor gatherings, it is house parties, it is people gathering together in an indoor setting and there really is no way for us to enforce that or prevent that other than the public's help and cooperation."He said if there are gatherings and another spike in cases, businesses, like Theater Box, could shut down once again. 1857
