SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans are signing up to build accessory dwelling units, or granny flats, in numbers that haven’t been seen in years. According to the city’s development services department people, more than 200 people went through the permitting process in 2018. “It fits for us to build an additional unit, the ADU since the council changed their ordinances,” said San Diego resident Efrain Conrique. Efrain Conrique has been in the same house since the 1960s but is now planning to build a 1,100 square foot accessory dwelling unit in his backyard. The house is for his granddaughter. "When you build a custom ADU it ads on to the square footage,” said Gregg Cantor of Murray Lampert Design, Build, Remodel. “The resale value is much higher.” Gregg Cantor says he’s working on several projects that wouldn’t have been possible without the recent regulation changes. He says since the City of San Diego streamlined the ADU process, nearly half calls he gets are people looking to build. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County officials are once again sounding the alarm, asking San Diegans to follow all health guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19.On Wednesday, local leaders held a press conference to discuss the county's latest numbers and their placement on the state's colored tier system. The county stayed in the red tier, but was dangerously close to slipping into the more restrictive purple tier. In fact, County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said San Diego County was only two cases away from the purple tier."Yesterday we dodged a bullet. We could not have gotten any closer without tripping into the purple tier," County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said at Wednesday's press conference. "But we don't want to live or die on the tiers by how many tests we've done."The county's unadjusted case rate is 7.7, while the adjusted rate is 7.0. Officials said the county's testing efforts allowed for that adjusted number. The county's health equity metric also improved, going down from 5.7% to 5.5%; the metric looks at the most undeserved, impacted communities.On Wednesday, health officials reported 263 new COVID-19 infections and six additional deaths, raising the region's cumulative totals to 53,263 cases and 863 fatalities.Six new community outbreaks were also reported Wednesday, two in businesses, two in restaurants, one in a restaurant/bar setting and one in a healthcare setting. In the past seven days, 32 community outbreaks were confirmed, well above the trigger of seven or more in a week's time.A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.Wooten said the best way to keep cases down is to continue following all health guidelines in place, like wearing a mask, staying home if you're sick, social distancing and avoiding indoor gatherings. The county is also looking ahead to Election Day, urging San Diegans to vote via mail-in ballot, but also reassuring in-person voters that it will be safe to cast a ballot. County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu is asking all in-person voters to wear a mask and be patient on Election Day. Vu said all 4,500 election workers will undergo two days of training before the election so they can handle sanitization procedures and how to direct crowds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Lifeguards and firefighters responded to Blacks Beach on Sunday to rescue an injured paraglider from a ravine.The 27-year-old woman, who is a pilot, was teaching an advanced training course for paragliding when she lost lift and her parachute collapse, according to lifeguards.Witnesses told lifeguards that the woman tried to brace her impact with her legs as she landed into a ravine next to a popular trail called "Citizens Trail."Lifeguards say the woman was far from the trail when she landed and San Diego Fire-Rescue was called to perform a technical rescue to lift her up the trail.The pilot was taken to a nearby hospital, though the extent of her injuries was not clear, lifeguards said. 734

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are investigating reports of a person being shot in the Mount Hope area Friday.San Diego Police said they were investigating reports that a 27-year-old Hispanic man showed up to Scripps Mercy Hospital with gunshot wounds just before 2 p.m. The man was rushed into surgery for life-threatening injuries.Soon after, police responded to the scene of 41st and C streets to investigate the location of the reported shooting.SDPD said based on the evidence gathered, the victim was in an altercation with man when gunshots rang out. The suspect they are searching for is a Hispanic male adult, approximately 29-30 years old who fled the area in a green pickup truck. He was last seen wearing a blue and yellow hat and a green jersey.The vehicle was last seen fleeing southbound on 41st St.SDPD Gang Detectives are investigating the shooting.
