OCOTILLO WELLS (KGTV) - Two people died after a crash in Ocotillo Wells Saturday night, according to Cal Fire. Two cars collided just after 7 p.m.near Highway 78 and Quarry Road. Two people died at the scene, Cal Fire confirmed. The road is closed in the area for an unknown amount of time to investigate the accident. Cal Fire asks that people avoid the scene of the accident.There is no word on what caused the accident at this time or how many other people were in the cars. 500

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Defense attorneys for 15 Marines accused of human smuggling said they hope the judge dismisses the case.The attorneys argued that the Commander illegally used his power to discipline the Marines publicly, and therefore influenced the outcome of the case.It was a very public display of discipline.Fifteen Camp Pendleton Marines were cuffed and taken away by NCIS agents in front of an 800-person battalion formation in July. They were accused of human smuggling and conspiracy.But now, attorneys representing a few of the accused Marines said the public arrests violated their rights. Now, they are filing what's called an "undue command influence" motion against the Battalion Commander who led the formation."Anytime you have a Commander who is in a position of leadership who potentially affects a subordinate's rights to a fair trial, that can be viewed as potential 'undue command influence,'" military attorney Gary Barthel explained. "This motion for 'undue command influence' was made against the Battalion Commander for making comments and parading the 15 individuals out for what was supposed to be a recognition, and they were ultimately arrested." Barthel is a former legal advisor to Camp Pendleton's Commanding General. He said a Commanding Officer's job is to maintain good order and discipline their command. But in military law, they also wear the prosecutor and jury selector hats."Those two hats can clash," Barthel said. "That's why it's important for Commanding Officers to be careful what they say with regard to their views of the military justice system, or their views of a particular individual who has been accused of an offense."The defense team said the Commander used his power to influence the outcome of the case unfairly. But Barthel said in his experience with 'undue command influence' cases, he believes the military has likely already taken the Commander in question off the case."You can take the individual that allegedly made the statements involved out of the process, and that keeps the process fair and impartial," Barthel said. (KGTV) - The Rugby team at MiraCosta College has qualified for the National Championships in Pittsburgh.The Spartans Rugby program is in its first full competitive season, and due to the lack of Junior College teams in Southern California, they play a schedule that consists of NCAA 4-year schools.The MiraCosta Rugby team is made up of around 40 players, many of whom have backgrounds in football and wrestling.The team doesn't lack for experience, as a few players have been playing for over 10 years, like Ian Crilly, who says he's pleased with the team's progression."I've been playing for about 12 years now, so it was a little rough with these first year players. Trying to get them up to speed but we got there," said Crilly.The Spartans begin play in the National Championships on April 21, and win or lose, they feel all there success this season has put the school on the map for athletics. They hope their success will get more kids, both men and women, to come out for the sport.  1028

Officers in New Jersey broke up a large house party in New Jersey with hundreds of people in attendance, authorities said.Police responded to a residence along Mill Pond Road in Jackson following a report of a suspicious incident around 8:30 p.m., according to Jackson Police Department.Officers arrived and spoke with several neighbors who said a house on the street was rented out to a group that was having a large party, causing a disturbance.Police contacted the homeowner, who said he had rented out the residence on Airbnb.The party expanded to about 700 people in attendance, with over 100 vehicles parked in the area, according to police.Officers began clearing the crowd from the residence and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office was contacted and authorized charges against the homeowner and party organizer for violating the state’s executive order in reference to the number of attendees allowed at a gathering.Officers from the Freehold Police Department, Howell Police Department, Lakewood Police Department, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, and New Jersey State Police also responded to assist and clear the large crowd from the residence and direct traffic as people left the area, according to authorities.During that time, police also received a call from a resident nearby reporting people who attended the party had broken into their residence and were damaging property.An investigation determined a family member of the caller was at the original party and had invited a large group back to their residence. The group was then dispersed, police said.It took until 1 a.m. for the officers to clear the residences of partygoers and all the vehicles from the neighborhood.The homeowner, later identified as 40-year-old Yaakov Weiss and the party organizers, 23-year-old Patience Guanue and 22-year-old Alicia Hinneh, were issued summonses.Gov. Phil Murphy referenced the party during his daily coronavirus briefing Monday while discussing flare-ups, particularly among young adults who attended recent house parties."You're looking for trouble, you're absolutely looking for trouble, no matter how old you are," he said of people who don't comply with social distancing orders.State Police Superintendent Pat Callahan attributed the large parties to the lack of bars and restaurants open due to the pandemic.“I do think the fact that bars and restaurants are close then create this underground situation, which is certainly not what we want," he said.In a statement, an Airbnb spokesperson said the company is in full contact with the company and is offering their support."We strongly condemn the reported behavior, which represents both a clear violation of Airbnb’s community policies and a particularly serious abuse during this public health crisis," Airbnb said.The listing has since been deactivated and the party organizers have also been removed from the platform, the company said.WPIX's Kristine Garcia first reported this story. 3005

Nurses at an assisted living facility in Glendale, Arizona are facing backlash for filming and making fun of elderly patients. The video ended up posted to the social media site 'Snapchat'. The incident occurred at the Glencroft Senior Living facility.  An administrator from Glencroft told Phoenix-based KNXV that the facility cannot discuss personnel issues, but did learn about the video Monday morning and is taking the situation seriously. The video shows an elderly woman using a walker as she advances toward the camera. She is obviously agitated, telling the workers she "almost fell" and is seen asking for her pills. Instead of helping the woman, the nurses continue filming as they watch the woman and mock her.The video came to light after a whistleblower saw it on social media and alerted KNXV, as well as Glencroft, and the Arizona state agency that licenses nurses.She is also a nurse and said she knows the woman who made the video from nursing school. "It just disgusted me that you would treat someone like this," said the whistleblower, who asked to remain anonymous. "This lady obviously has some dementia or something going on."The whistleblower also said she is worried about violations of the patient's rights under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.  KNXV has reached out to the Arizona State Board of Nursing but has yet to receive an answer on this topic.  1468
