SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Frustrated business owners are speaking out after a rash of break-ins at local wineries and breweries.Lisa Miller, the co-owner of Koi Zen Cellars in Carmen Mountain Ranch, says her heart sank after she arrived at her winery one morning a few weeks ago."The plant was move to the side and the window was completely shattered. My heart started pounding. I got very anxious," said Miller.Inside, she tasted more anxiety. Police believe the intruder was looking for the cash register, something Miller doesn't have. Instead, the burglar grabbed 40 pieces of consignment jewelry valued at more than ,000."When the detective arrived, he said this has been happening in other wineries and breweries in the area," said Miler.Longship Brewery in Mira Mesa in early April: surveillance video shows a person in a hoodie breaking a window, then crawling through the window. Two days later at the Black Plague Brewery in Oceanside, an intruder wearing a mask and hoodie kicked through a window, slipped in and raced right for the cash drawer, before leaving and driving off in a white Jeep Patriot. Detectives told Miller some 18 breweries and wineries targeted in the past few months. "This makes me really sad, mom-and-pop places put their heart and soul into their business no matter what their business is. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Heavy rains and wind across San Diego County hit one Coronado business particularly hard.The Coronado Tree Farm had only been open for about a week before Thursday's Grinch of a storm rolled through the area, heavily damaging the small farm at the ferry landing. The farm posted on Facebook that it would have to close for the season, before it could fully deliver some Christmas joy."Sad to say that the Tree Farm has to be closed down," the farm wrote. "The rain destroyed all our inventory and commercial props, generator, hay, games, prizes, tables, fencing, tents etc... We would have to start all over again in order to run it."Steve Albert, co-owner of the Coronado Flower Lady, told 10News they tried to curtail any damages but the weather simply took hold."I started trying to get everything I could under the big tent, and while I was doing that, one would break lose, and then another one," Albert said. "The whole thing is just kind of anchored together. The whole thing just went."Some of the trees and decorations are in good condition and will be offered up to anyone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of Transportation Security Administration workers in San Diego are just some of the local federal workers impacted by the government shutdown.Of the more than 3,000 TSA employees between San Diego and San Luis Obispo represented by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 1260, about 600 employees work in San Diego, the union told 10News.The impact of the shutdown has been "immense" on many employees, AFGE says.RELATED: Government shutdown delays investigation into man's death at Yosemite National Park"The impact has obviously been immense, especially considering it began during the holiday season and into the new year when many employees had already purchased gifts for their families, incurred debts, and still had to worry about upcoming bills," AFGE Vice President Bobby Orozco Jr. says.Orozco pointed to the fact many federal employees live paycheck-to-paycheck as a cause for concern, noting that TSA frontline employees make an average of ,000 annually. Daily expenses like buying gas, lunch, and affording child care are some of the immediate impacts employees are facing.10News spoke to several TSA workers at San Diego International Airport off-camera, who said they, too, feel the pinch. One man said he was one of the fortunate people who have family support in case of an emergency. But his co-workers are not so lucky. Another employee told 10News that he is struggling as he enters his third week without a paycheck. Unable to pay his bills, he is charging everything onto new credit cards. "This shutdown, as all others prior, forces employees to use credit cards and other emergency funds, if applicable, in order to make ends meet until a resolution is met," Orozco said. Call-outs at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport increased by 200-300 percent, according to one local TSA official.Some are calling this phenomenon the "Blue flu," in reference to the TSA uniform colors. 10News asked TSA workers here if they were seeing an increased number of call-outs recently. A few people said they had not noticed a drastic difference, but come next week, it may be a different story.While wait times could be affected by an increase in call outs, TSA spokesman Michael Bilello told CNN they don't expect a lapse in security or wait times."Call-outs began over the Holiday period and have increased, but are causing minimal impact given there are 51,739 employees supporting the screening process," Bilello told CNN. "Security effectiveness will not be compromised and performance standards will not change."Union officials told CNN the call outs were not part of an organized action, but could increase as the shutdown persists. 3988
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For breast cancer survivor Cindy Swan, group therapy sessions have been an integral part of her fight."At first, I thought I don't need that. That's not for me. I'm a 27-year veteran Navy wife. I can handle anything," she says."But people (in the group) really know what you're going through. They understand it. And seeking help does not make you weak."Cindy has been a regular at Sharp Grossmont group sessions since 2018.But the coronavirus pandemic forced the hospital to cancel all in-person sessions this past March."It was a little bit scary," Swan says. "Because now you have no lifeline that you have been holding on to, to learn your way."Social workers at Sharp scrambled during the first few weeks, trying to find a way to make sure cancer survivors, who are a high-risk group for COVID-19, could still meet and get the emotional support they need.They started to hold virtual group meetings, working through the kinks and quirks of sessions online."Coming to the group was important; maintaining those connections was important; normalizing what was going on for everybody was really, really important," says Sharp Grossmont Oncology Social Worker Linda Hutkin-Slade."But it feels different," she says. "You can't read the room like you do when you're in person. And you don't get the same (non-verbal) cues that you're getting when you're only seeing somebody from the shoulders up."The online sessions were a near-instant success. Within a few weeks, the groups, which are open to anyone, had grown. Cancer patients from all over the world started to join. And people who used to miss meetings because they were feeling ill or couldn't make the drive became more regular participants."It's never going to be the same as the in-person," says Hutkin-Slade. "But it is at least something. And it's a connection. And it helps normalize what people are going through."For Swan, it's been just as helpful as the in-person sessions."We still get to talk to each other," she says. "We get to have the guidance of our social workers, and all of that still helps you feel connected, even when you're not physically connected to other people."When the pandemic ends, Sharp says they'll make group therapy a hybrid of in-person and online, to let people access therapy in whatever way is most comfortable for them.That way, whether it's virtual or face to face, cancer survivors know they're not alone.For more information about Sharp Grossmont's online group therapy, click here. 2510
