A simulation program to train nurses is gaining in popularity. Shadow Health is using virtual patients to train real people in hopes of quickly bringing those real students into the workforce.From pediatrics to maternal health, the future of nursing school is happening now.“The technology is so good, you’ll get an answer. You might not get the answer you’re looking for; you’ll have to rephrase and that’s the way it is in real life too,” said Lorrie Rilko, an assistant professor at George Washington University’s School of Nursing.She was a nurse practitioner for 30 years and then decided it was time to help the next generation of nurses.“My greatest responsibility is to prepare future nurse practitioners in the art of accurate history taking and skilled physical exam and then putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together to come up with a clinical diagnosis,” Rilko said.She says George Washington University was already using this simulated technology when the pandemic hit. The pandemic put the program in the perfect position to continue training new medical professionals and it allows them to learn, practice and fail on computers rather than on real live patients.“It's kind of like telehealth,” Rilko said. “We’ve had telehealth and until we had to really rely on telehealth, there were a lot of barriers to overcome."Brent Gordon is the managing director for Elsevier's nursing and health education business, which recently acquired Shadow Health.“One of the challenges in higher education institutions, specifically in the United States and this is true worldwide, is that they have challenges meeting the demand, they have capacity constraints,” Gordon said. “One example is shortage of clinical space. Digital simulations help solve that problem.”He says one of the real problems that the virtual education solves is that of communication, which he says can be at the root of medical malpractice claims.“Nurses are increasingly graduating, passing the (National Council Licensure Examination) NCLEX but not entering practice with the clinical reasoning skills they need to be successful on day one," said Gordon.Rilko said her students enjoy the virtual interaction, and they like training on their own time. A ninth victim has died after a Florida nursing home failed to evacuate its residents, who suffered for days in oppressive heat with no air conditioning, after Hurricane Irma, according to the Hollywood Police Department.The 93-year-old died on Tuesday, adding to eight who were found dead last week at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, or who died after being evacuated to a hospital.The exact cause of death has not been reported, but a number of the 141 residents who were evacuated were treated for heat-related issues. A new report from the Government Accountability Office released Thursday criticizes the federal government for sending out .4 billion in stimulus payments to dead people.The independent watchdog report says the Treasury and IRS sent almost 1.1 million payments totaling nearly .4 billion to deceased individuals around the country.“IRS announced that if a payment was issued to a deceased or incarcerated individual, the total amount should be returned,” read the report. “However, the IRS does not currently plan to take additional steps to notify ineligible recipients on how to return payments.”The GAO is an independent investigative agency that reports its findings to CongressThe agency found that the IRS failed to access death records maintained by the Social Security Administration before sending out the payments.“Typically, IRS uses third-party data, such as the death records maintained by the SSA to detect and prevent erroneous and fraudulent tax refund claims,” read the report. “However, Treasury and IRS did not use the death records to stop payments to deceased individuals for the first three batches of payments because of the legal interpretation under which IRS was operating.”J. Tilden, who lives near Indianapolis, was surprised when he got a ,200 paper check in the mail for his mother, Lillian. A storm system causing severe weather Sunday along the Gulf Coast is forecast to move off the East Coast, turn into a nor'easter and threaten the Northeastern United States on Monday night into Tuesday.The storm's exact path remains a bit uncertain, but the system will bring precipitation and wind in what will be the third significant winter storm in the past 10 days.A winter storm watch is in effect for 8.5 million people in New England, including residents of Boston and Portland, Maine. A record number of women are projected to win seats in the House in a massive night for female candidates across the political spectrum.As of Thursday morning, CNN projected at least 100 women would win House races, with 35 women newly elected to the House and 65 female incumbents. That bests the previous record of 85 representatives, according to the Congressional Research Service.
