A 55-foot Christmas tree originating from Colorado’s Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests was lit on Wednesday night in front of the US Capitol. The annual ceremony, which typically draws thousands of spectators, was held without a crowd due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the event was live streamed, and still contained some pomp and circumstance as congressional leaders joined in the annual ceremony. The tree was officially cut on November 5 before making the cross-country trek to Washington, DC.While tonight’s ceremony was held without spectators, those who are in the DC area can view the tree nightly. The tree will be illuminated every evening from nightfall until 11 p.m. through January 1. 740

(KGTV) — With back to school season upon parents, many are already planning how to provide their kids with the best possible path to success this school year. For some, this may include setting up tutoring or extra study sessions outside of normal class hours. The good news is there are a variety of ways parents can connect their kids with extra help in specific or broad areas of study.MORE: Back to school resources for parentsMany times, schools have the resources and experts to accomplish this. Some, however, find help online through local searches. Help from within family networks is always an option too. Here are a few beginning tips before searching for the right tutor for your child:Figuring out the area of concern...Before beginning your search for a tutor, assess the underlying concern affecting any educational performance. This will make it easier to work with tutors when it comes time to develop a curriculum. Knowing how to address learning difficulties also helps tutors know how to address challenges and track your child's progress.Talk to your child's school...Speaking with those who work directly with your child is a must. Teachers and counselors will be able to connect parents with services offered through the school, including after-school study sessions. There are also opportunities outside of the school through the U.S. Department of Education your child may be eligible to receive.Peer tutors...Peer tutoring services have been available for years at schools and in neighborhoods; often times, schools will enlist students to tutor fellow classmates. Searching for local students who may tutor outside of school hours is also an option for parents to seek, just be sure to check their qualifications and make sure they're the right fit.Tutoring agencies...One trip onto Yelp will yield a variety of local and national tutoring services in your area. These agencies vet their educators and can often provide tutoring for specific areas of study or broad areas of concern for your child. Websites like noodle.org connect parents with local tutoring agencies.Consider online learning...In some cases, services offered online may be the key. Parents can work together with their child on lessons in the comfort of their home. Online lessons may offer extra services and ways for students to continually practice lessons outside normal sessions. 2440

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Burrous family. Chris loved sharing the stories of Southern California and connecting with our viewers. He will be remembered as a great journalist and a wonderful friend to many. He brought a kindness to his work and will be deeply missed by the entire KTLA family.” 315

(SAN DIEGO) -- Earlier this week we shared an alarming story about a stabbing in Balboa Park. It involved a homeless man, and in our interviews with experts, we found the number one concern for San Diegans is no longer the drought, it's our growing homeless problem.RELATED: 29-year-old stabbed on bench at Balboa ParkA study released in January by the statistics portal shows San Diego has the fourth largest homeless population in the Country, behind New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle. 65 percent of our homeless are mentally ill, and 10 percent are severe. So we asked you, do you feel less safe living in San Diego than you did five years ago?Email from Robert:  685

“Caught on camera” moments are fun to watch.  They can also be important evidence when they show people breaking the law.Radius Security in Vancouver, Canada, has developed new technology to help police catch suspected criminals in the act."Every single night we are getting one or two apprehensions on one of our sites across the country," said Joel Luyt, a site security specialist with Radius Security.“We have 15 computers inside our unit,” said Luyt.  Radius Security’s cameras use those computers to scan for humans.  The technology disregards other things that might move, like tree branches, animals and rain, that would normally set off a false alarm."So they're looking for oscillating arms. They're looking for head movement, torso and they're deciphering, 'is that a human?'"  said Luyt.By reducing the number of false alarms, more officers are available to respond to an actual crime.Car dealerships and construction companies hire Radius Security to keep watch for burglars, who can make off with expensive spools of wire or copper tubing worth thousands of dollars.Bernie Godler runs Performance Construction and says the new technology has proven more reliable and cut down on false alarms."A full-time manned security gets very expensive. It seems that you know, having a full-time manned security would actually be better but it isn't because we're finding that we get guards that end up falling asleep on the job site. We actually had one job where the manned security was in cahoots with the people who were stealing the stuff off the job site," said Godler.A study said false alarms cost the U.S. nearly billion dollars.  94 percent of alarms turned out to be false, tying up valuable police time when there is no burglar.Radius says it helps police capture the bad guy, like one man who hid in a porta potty, about 60 percent of the time. This technology also lets the security company route a live feed from the security camera to law enforcement's cars."They can punch in a four-digit code into their vehicle while they're driving to the site and they can see live what our monitoring station is seeing so they'll know where the criminal is on the site and they'll see what he is doing live on video and get there in an even faster time.,” said Luyt.Right now, this technology runs upwards of ,000 a year, which is too expensive for many.  But, Luyt expects that eventually, the computer system will get smaller and be more cost-effective to keep your home safe. The company plans to expand this year to the United States, both in San Francisco and Chicago. 2639
