A federal jury in Oregon on Friday acquitted an FBI agent accused of lying to authorities about whether he opened fire during the fatal shooting of LaVoy Finicum, one of the leaders of the occupation of federal property in 2016.Agent W. A Department of Education team that had looked into fraud and abuse by for-profit colleges has been dismantled to the point that it has "effectively killed investigations" into institutions where top hires of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos once worked, The New York Times reported Sunday, citing current and former employees.The team has gone from about a dozen lawyers and investigators looking into advertising, recruitment, and graduate employment claims of several institutions at the end of the Obama administration to just three team members today, the Times reported. Current and former employees, including former team members, said the team's mission has been reduced to processing student loan forgiveness applications and examining smaller compliance cases, the newspaper said.An investigation into DeVry University, now known as Adtalem Global Education, "ground to a halt early last year," and later, over the summer, DeVos picked Julian Schmoke, a former dean at the school, to be the team's supervisor, the Times reported. 1046

A gunman and three female hostages were found dead at a military veterans home in Northern California on Friday night, officials said, a grim end to a standoff that lasted nearly eight hours.Shortly before 6 p.m., officers stormed into the room where the gunman had held the hostages at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, said Chris Childs with the California Highway Patrol.They found the gunman and the three hostages dead, he said. The coroner's office identified the victims as Christine Loeber, 48; Jennifer Golick, 42; and Jennifer Gonzales, 29.  577

A man assaulted his elderly father when he came home from work and found that dinner wasn't ready, police in Pennsylvania claim.Frank Steinetz, 50, of Taylor, Pennsylvania, repeatedly punched his 83-year-old dad in the head and face on Monday night, according to Scranton's Times-Tribune.The newspaper reported that when Steinetz came home at 5:45 p.m. he got mad because his father had not prepared a meal for him.A neighbor called police after hearing screaming from Steinetz's house. The neighbor told officers he could hear Steinetz asking, "Oh, does that hurt?" along with what sounded like a physical assault.Steinetz's father, who was described as "extremely frail" by police, had bruises on his face, arms and leg after the incident, according to the Associated Press."He beat me up," the 83-year-old victim told police, according to The Times-Tribune.Steinetz was arrested on charges of aggravated and simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment. A father accused of killing his three children during a domestic dispute near Sacramento, California was arrested on Thursday, ABC News reports. Robert Hodges is in a California jail while he awaits formal charges. ABC reports that he is being held without bail until he faces a judge on Monday. The Yolo County Coroner told ABC News the children were 11 years old, 9 years old and 8 months old when they were allegedly killed by Hodges Wednesday evening. Police said that the children's mother was injured during the domestic assualt. Her injuries are unknown. Neighbors reported to dispatchers a domestic incident to police around 9 p.m. local time Wednesday. Several people who knew Hodges and the victims said they were unaware of any domestic violence in the family. "The kids seemed jolly most of the time, seemed happy. I never saw any child abuse or parents fighting or anything like that," neighbor William Crawford told ABC. "I never heard them fight, never heard the parents argue, ever....I got the impression he loved his kids, got the impression the kids loved their dad."To read ABC's full report, click here.  1198
