BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A well-known economist said Monday that the biggest problem in China is not inflation, but shifting its economic structure to maintain sustainable growth."The biggest challenge faced by China is economic restructuring in order to shift the economy to a more balanced way that will provide sustainable economic growth," Stephen Roach, former chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia, told Xinhua."In the post-crisis environment, the shift means to build a consumer-led economy, and that is the overriding challenge in China," said Roach, who currently serves as non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia.Residents' incomes in China remain at a low level. "People's incomes are only 42 percent of the GDP, whereas in the US the rate is 86 percent. So the government should raise the income of the citizens, especially when China wants to stimulate domestic private consumption," said Roach."Of course, that does not mean the Chinese government should ignore the risk of higher inflation," he said.Official data showed that China's October Consumer Price Index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high at 4.4 percent."There is a certain amount of momentum to inflation, so it's likely to be the a problem over the next 12 months. If the government acts quickly, it will be able to limit the problem, or else China could be facing this problem in 2012 as well," said Roach.Roach suggested China should take broad and comprehensive approaches in dealing with inflation, and the medium-term goal of the shifted economic structure need to be maintained."The government has to demonstrate its resolve in dealing with inflation, and property market assets. It's a challenge, but I think the government is up to the challenge," according to Roach.

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Wu Di, working as a secretary at a department at the elite Peking University, has to sacrifice privacy for lower rent.She now shares one room of a two-bedroom apartment, furnished with two single beds, and splits the monthly rent of 1,500 yuan (224 U.S. dollars) with a female friend.Wu moved to the new apartment two weeks ago. She used to share a two-bedroom apartment with a family of three, after she graduated from college in June 2010."I paid 1,250 yuan monthly. It was too much for me as I only earned 3,000 yuan a month," said Wu. "Besides, the family next door was very noisy."Although the current rent relieved her financial difficulty a bit, she hoped to pay less."Nearly one-third of my salary goes to rent. I am always very careful about spending money," she said.A survey done by the China Youth Daily Survey Center in December last year showed that 81.6 percent of 4,060 surveyed tenants around China thought that their rent had increased, and 80.6 percent said the soaring rent has greatly affected their lives.More and more young, white-collar Chinese have found themselves in an embarrassing situation: they have to bear a heavy financial burden from soaring rent and housing prices while not qualifying to enjoy preferential policies the government offers to low-income people, such as low-rent apartments.Lu Wei, a programmer working at a leading portable website, witnessed the housing rent increasing over the past four years."It would cost nearly 1,000 yuan less per month for a midium-decorated two-bedroom apartment in 2006," he said, now sharing a two-bedroom apartment with a friend near Beijing's downtown.Liu Qingzhu, research fellow with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, argued that housing rent has taken up too much of young people's income."Spending one-third or even a half of their income in housing rent is too much. CHANGSHA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Central China's Hunan Province began building the country's third National Supercomputing Center (NSCC) on Sunday, where the world's fastest supercomputer, the Tianhe-1A, will be installed. BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A survey conducted by an information center affiliated to Beijing's commerce bureau revealed that retail sales jumped at more than 3,500 stores in the Chinese capital during the 3-day New Year holiday ending Monday, nearly reaching 2.5 billion yuan (about 378 million U.S. dollars), up 17.1 percent from the same period last year.The Beijing Commercial Information Consultation Center surveyed 3,568 stores in Beijing regarding their sales volumes during the past three days, finding that various holiday promotions had brought notable results, pushing up sales to over 2.49 billion yuan.The survey results also showed that consumers in Beijing were passionate about buying gold, since gold prices have kept rising during the past year. Consumers buy gold for investment purposes or to preserve their personal wealth amid the rising Consumer Price Index.Sales volumes at the Caishikou Department Store, which is famous for its gold products, surged 64.1 percent during this holiday from one year earlier.Besides gold, consumers also showed great interest in rabbit-figured toys and commodities with rabbit pictures on them, as 2011 is the year of rabbit in traditional Chinese culture.
