BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Sunday stressed it would assure that there is a stable supply of farm produce amid ongoing icy weather as the nation's most important traditional festival approaches.The ministry urged local authorities, in a notice on its website, to make every effort to ensure continued agriculture production as the freezing weather threatens abundant supplies, which are critical during the Spring Festival, the annual season for family reunions.Temperatures and humidity in vegetable greenhouses and corrals should be kept at proper levels, while exposure to frigid weather by poultry and livestock should be minimized.The ministry also asked local departments to facilitate the smooth transporting to markets of fresh farm produce.Freezing weather in south China has forced the evacuation of at least 58,000 people from their homes over the past week, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Southern China will experience more icy rain and snow from Sunday to Thursday, where freezing weather has hit since the New Year's Day, the National Meteorological Center reported Sunday.

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will increase grain supplies to meet people's needs and stabilize market prices, the nation's grain authorities said Friday.The government will also sell a set amount of cooking vegetable oil and soybeans from its reserves beginning next week, in addition to the weekly policy-oriented sales of wheat, rice and corn that has already begun, the State Administration of Grain said in a statement posted on its website Friday.The authority will also send groups of staff to major grain production regions to inspect and guide purchases of autumn grain and regulate business practices, according to the statement.The move was in line with the government's efforts to protect farmers' interests and maintain moderate prices in the grain market, the statement said.China's State Council, or the Cabinet, said Wednesday that it would impose temporary price controls on important daily necessities and production materials when necessary, and urged local authorities to offer temporary subsidies to needy families.It also ordered efforts be implemented to ensure market supplies and strengthen market supervision.These steps were introduced after China's consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. FUZHOU, Nov. 11 (Xinhua)-- Alibaba.com Ltd., operator of China' s largest online-commerce site for businesses, said its paying members in the third quarter exceeded 1 million for the first time, as shown in its unaudited financial figures for the quarter, released on Thursday.Alibaba boasts 56.7 million registered users, 8.2 million storefronts and over 1 million paying members, up by 25 percent, 35 percent and 30 percent respectively, year on year, according to the report."We specifically stepped up our efforts in enforcing a trusted and safe environment in our marketplace by eliminating paying members who committed fraud, as well as those who have a high probability to commit fraud. BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Traffic congestion has eased "obviously" in Beijing since authorities launched a string of new, stricter traffic rules and opened five new subway lines last month, a local transport official said Wednesday."On average, the duration of traffic jams has been reduced by more than two hours per day, from 3 hours and 55 minutes before the new year to the current 1 hour 45 minutes since Jan. 1," said Li Xiaosong, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Committee of Communications.Li's committee has unveiled an index system of Beijing's traffic congestion, the first for the city.According to the system, 0-2 signified traffic was "smooth," 2-4 "generally smooth," 4-6 signalled "slight congestion," 6-8 "moderate congestion," and 8-10 "heavy congestion," Li said."Before the New Year, Beijing's congestion index usually stood above 8.2, but it has been 6 since Jan. 1," she said.Li attributed the improvement to the new traffic rules and subway lines.Massive traffic jams have long been a headache for Beijing, a city of 20 million people and 4.8 million vehicles. Last year, an average 2,000 new cars hit the city's streets every day.On Dec. 23, authorities in Beijing announced they will slash new car registrations to ease traffic gridlock. This year, the city will allow only 240,000 vehicles to be registered, about a third of the number of last year.Moreover, Beijing municipal government agencies and public institutions were prohibited from increasing the size of their vehicle fleets over the next five years.Other measures include higher parking fees in the city's central areas, and stricter traffic rules for cars registered outside Beijing.An odd-even license plate number system was introduced to allow cars to be driven every other day in peak hours in some congested areas.Beijing opened five new suburban subway lines on Dec. 30 with a combined length of 108 km, bringing the city's total number of subway lines to 14 and the total length to 336 km.Beijing was building more subway lines, Li said.The number of lines in the city would reach 19 by 2015. Then, their combined length would total 561 km.
