Seventeen days after voters went to the polls in Ohio's 12th congressional district, Republican Troy Balderson hung on by a 1,680-vote margin to win the seat over insurgent Democrat Danny O'Connor.The seat, previously held by Pat Tiberi, and before that current Ohio Gov. John Kasich, has been held by Republicans since 1983. The district has not seen a competitive race since then, as both Kasich and Tiberi typically won every two years by comfortable margins. But the district, which includes parts of Columbus' affluent northern suburbs, rapidly urbanizing Delaware County to Columbus' north, as well as several surrounding rural counties, became competitive after Tiberi announced his retirement. Polls leading up to the Aug. 7 battle showed a dead heat. On election night, Balderson held a nearly 1,500-vote advantage. O'Connor announced that he would wait on all absentee and provisional ballots to be counted before conceding. All of those votes have now been counted as of Friday. “I just called Troy Balderson to congratulate him on his victory in the 12th Congressional district special election," O'Connor said in a statement. "I want to express my deepest thanks to my campaign staff, our volunteers, and to everyone who cast a vote in the special election, whether it was for me or not."Balderson also issued a response on Friday. "Danny O'Connor ran a hard-fought race," he said, "but I look forward to earning the support of voters for a fourth time in November as I share my track record of getting things done for Ohioans."While both were gracious to each other on Friday, the affinity for each other will almost certainly be short lived. Both O'Connor and Balderson also are on the ballot in November. And with control of the House of Representatives hanging in the balance in November, there is no reason to believe that either candidate will let up on the attacks on each other from the special election. Democrats will need to gain 25 seats in order to flip the House for the first time since 2010. According to Cook Political Report, there are 30 toss-up seats up for grabs, with 28 of them currently being held by Republicans. St. Louis Zoo officials are trying to solve the mystery of how a 62-year-old ball python laid seven eggs without being around a male python for at least two decades. An expert at the zoo says it’s unusual but not rare for ball pythons to reproduce asexually. Pythons also sometimes store sperm for delayed fertilization. The zoo say the birth is also unusual because ball pythons stop laying eggs long before they reach their 60s. The python laid the eggs in July. Three of the eggs remain in an incubator, two were used for genetic sampling and snakes in the other two eggs did not survive. 599

Several countries have started shifting to a shorter quarantine recommendation.Places like France are now telling COVID-19 patients to quarantine for seven days instead of 14. Other countries like Spain, Belgium and Germany are having people quarantine for 10 days.The idea here is that a shorter quarantine is better than no quarantine at all. Some people may find it difficult to self-isolate and because of the long period, they may not attempt to do it.“If you have a job that requires you to be there, you’ll miss two weeks’ worth of work,” said Marcus Plescia, Chief Medical Officer at the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. “Even if you have a job with really good benefits, where you can take sick leave and they can accommodate that, even in that situation, it’s going to be difficult for most people.”Another idea that supports this is that many people will not need the full two weeks to develop COVID-19 symptoms. The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials says the vast majority of people are showing symptoms within four to six days.They do say that the downside to shorter quarantine is that there is the possibility they will miss some people who start showing symptoms later on.Utah is one state that has approved a shorter quarantine period under certain guidelines. The governor there has allowed students to return to school after seven days of quarantine, if they have not shown symptoms. That’s specifically for students who were wearing a mask and were at school when they were exposed.Some more states are also considering a shorter quarantine time for children in grades K-12.“They tend to be asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms, so there’s not a danger for the most part, there’s not a danger to the children themselves,” said Plescia.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently looking at shorter quarantine periods for college-age students.Depending on what they find, the CDC may be able to issue new guidance on self-isolation periods to get states on the same page. 2065

Southwest Airlines says it has canceled roughly 1 per cent of its scheduled flights as it carries out inspections prompted by an engine failure that led to a passenger's death last week. About 40 flights were impacted.The affected Southwest Boeing 737 took off Tuesday morning from New York, headed for Dallas. About 20 minutes into the flight, at about 32,500 feet, a fan blade broke off the engine and shrapnel shattered a window.Jennifer Riordan, 43, and a mother of two, was almost sucked out of the broken window and pulled back inside by fellow passengers.
