SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Finding financial freedom in San Diego can feel impossible when you're weighed down by crippling debt. Credit cards, students loans, and car payments are some of the biggest drivers.Vista resident Amanda Williams felt the pain of debt back in 2014. She and her now husband Josh were facing over 3,000."I got mad and said I had enough, I hit my breaking point and had to do something," Amanda said. This was around the time she earned her Bachelor of Arts and was working for an IT company making around an hour. Before that, Amanda had been working odd part-time jobs. Amanda and Josh's debt broke down to these main drivers: 658

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Doorbell cameras show teen pranks getting more destructive and some wonder if the cameras themselves could be sparking some of the damage. Videos of young kids playing 'Ding Dong Ditch' with doorbells are nothing new, but some teens are now taking it to another level. "Very disturbing," said Lilly, a homeowner who lives on Hilltop Drive in Chollas View. In the last few months on three different occasions, rocks or bottles have been thrown at her home and car. Her car's back window was shattered during one incident. "All the kids were laughing and running away," said Lilly. Each time, she caught at least one middle-school-aged boy running from her home. Several cameras are clearly mounted on the front of her house. In one video from the past week, a groups of boys walks past her lawn and one of them rips out her solar lights. Last Tuesday night in Lemon Grove, three teens are seen walking in front of a home. Suddenly when one walks toward the door, motioning to his leg. With a big smile on his face, the teen kicks the door forcefully and runs off. The homeowner posted on the Neighbors by Ring app that it caused major damage to his frame and paint. In that case, the doorbell camera was again in plain sight. They're meant to deter crime and they often do, but could surveillance camera in these cases be adding to the motivation for these teens? One San Diegan posting on the app about 'truth-or-dare games' in his neighborhood with young kids and dares involving surveillance cameras."Really scary to think these are younger kids with young minds making horrible choices ... They know they can be caught and do it anyways," said Lilly."Some teens can be drawn to doing stupid things in front of thee camera because of the thrill and excitement, and because that age group is more prone to not thinking about the consequences," said Dr. Mark Kalish, a forensic psychiatrist. 1920

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters in San Diego are rallying around a beloved firefighter suddenly in the fight of his life, after a cancer diagnosis."His nickname is 'Big Joe,' because he's bigger than life," said firefighter Russell Castillo.Castillo says Engineer/Paramedic Joe Odom, 49, is known as the light switch in a room."His smile lights up a room. His energy lights up a room. He makes everyone feel valued ... It’s our time to return that love," said Castillo. It’s been an emotional time for the 23-year veteran of San Diego Fire-Rescue. He recently discovered some swelling in his groin area. Doctors diagnosed him with lymphoma, cancer that begins in the immune system. He’s awaiting more testing for a prognosis. It comes as Odom’s wife Lisa battles serious health issues, including a lung condition and lupus."She’s giving me inspiration for what’s she’s been through," said Odom.Lisa is immunocompromised. Odom, as a paramedic on the front lines, has been trying to keep her safe, while still serving the community during a pandemic."It's scary for a lot of folks. I just want to be there, anyway I know how ... Just feel like I need be out there," said Odom.A help now on pause as he begins his cancer battle, and he’ll be far from alone."I feel like I'm in this dark places but God is bringing all these people to me," said Odom.Firefighters from Odom’s Station 26 in Oak Park have helped organize a fundraiser, including a meal train, along with countless messages of support."It's our time to show how much we love him," said Castillo."I'm speechless of the support I’m getting. Puts a smile on my face, happiness in my heart. Making it a little easier to get through this. I’m embracing that," said Odom. 1730

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Disney officials say they do not believe Disneyland or California Adventure parks will reopen before 2021.During an earnings call on Thursday, Disney Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy said the Anaheim theme park will likely remain close through the end of the fiscal first quarter, which ends in late December."While some of our parks are open with limited capacity, we currently anticipate Disneyland resort will remain closed at least through the end of the fiscal first quarter," McCarthy said.RELATED: San Diego County businesses sue amid rollback in reopening restrictionsMcCarthy added that the company does not have any indication of how long restrictions on theme parks will last.California introduced reopening guidelines for small and large theme parks in October. Small theme parks with a capacity of less than 15,000 visitors can reopen in the state's moderate (orange) tier while large parks like Disneyland can reopen in the minimal (yellow) tier.Orange County is currently in the red tier and would need to post two weeks of orange tier data to move forward. The county would need to do the same to move into the yellow tier. Disney's Anaheim parks may then need time to prepare for visitors if able to reopen.RELATED: California rejects San Diego's request for reopening tier changeDisney CEO Bob Chapek said on the call that California's "arbitrary standard" for COVID-19 guidelines is hurting employees and surrounding businesses.“Unfortunately, we’re extremely disappointed that the state of California continues to keep Disneyland closed despite our proven track record,” Chapek said. “Frankly, as we and other civic leaders have stated before, we believe state leadership should look objectively at what we’ve achieved successfully at our parks around the world, all based on science, as opposed to setting an arbitrary standard that is precluding our cast members from getting back to work while decimating small businesses and the local community." 2007
