There are new concerns about people's ability to understand information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.Dartmouth College researchers found many health agencies are publishing coronavirus information at a 10th grade reading level.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the American Medical Association and National Institutes of Health say information should not be published at more than an 8th grade reading level.Researchers say it could lead to more people missing information.“If high quality information, in terms of content, like with the CDC, WHO and other official organizations put out, if that is difficult to access, difficult to understand, then that does create a potential or an incentive for looking at less trustworthy sources,” said Joseph Dexter, Neukom Fellow at Dartmouth College.Researchers say health agencies need to use short and direct sentences when writing health information. They should also use short paragraphs, avoiding jargon and technical terms.It's also important to think about how information can be presented visually on a screen.Right now, it's not required that states follow these guidelines, but it is highly recommended. 1192

Three people trapped in an inactive West Virginia mine for several days were rescued on Wednesday, state officials said.The three West Virginia residents were brought to the surface and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, Samantha Smith, a spokesperson with the West Virginia Department of Commerce, told CNN late Wednesday.Kayla Williams, 25 of Artie; Erica Treadway, 31, of Pax and Cody Beverly, 21 of Dorothy, were alert, talking and walking without assistance, Raleigh County Sheriff Scott Van Meter said in an interview. He said the three had snacks and water with them."It's a miracle they were found alive," the sheriff said.Williams, Treadway and Beverly were among a group of four people who were reported missing Saturday after an abandoned ATV they were believed to be riding was found near the entrance of the Rock House Powellton mine in Clear Creek, according to a statement from West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice.One person, Eddie Williams, 43 of Artie, emerged late Monday, according to the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training.He said the three people left trapped were alive and gave authorities details of their location, according to Justice's office.Rescue teams failed to find them Monday and Tuesday. But had been removing standing water from the mine and pumping in fresh air, and by Wednesday, more access space had been cleared, allowing more rescuers to enter, Justice's office said.The underground mine is inactive and sealed, Contura Energy, whose affiliate Elk Run Coal owns the property, told CNN, adding that the person who made it out "was apprehended by law enforcement."This is the second trespassing incident at an abandoned mine reported in the last two weeks, Justice said in the statement.Van Meter said the three who were found alive on Wednesday could possibly be charged because they were not supposed to be in the mine.But first, the sheriff said, "they need to enjoy being rescued." 1973

TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) -- Mexican authorities said a Chula Vista woman and her friend were gunned down at a family gathering in Tijuana. Investigators said the suspect is a Tijuana firefighter who shot at the two during a jealous rage.The victim was identified as 32-year-old Roxana Diaz."She was always smiling, she was kind of crazy," said Diaz' cousin Ivett Corral. "A happy lady."Tijuana investigators said Diaz went to visit a family friend, 39-year-old Carlos Roberto Trujillo, in Tijuana Aug. 15. They and another female friend met with several Tijuana firefighters at a get-together.Early the next morning, the three friends headed to Trujillo's home at Colonia Union. Police said the three firefighters ambushed the group, shooting at Trujillo and Diaz, and kidnapping the other woman.Trujillo died just outside his home. Diaz underwent surgery at Tijuana General Hospital but died Aug. 20 after she was transferred to UCSD Medical Center. "I start crying a lot because she was like a sister to me," Corral said. "She was more than a cousin. We grew up together."Police said after the firefighters kidnapped the woman, she screamed for help at a toll plaza on the way to Ensenada. Officers were alerted and arrested the firefighters.Mexican investigators said the alleged shooter, identified only as 27-year-old Ricardo N., is the boyfriend of the woman he and his co-workers kidnapped. They said he was jealous that she was socializing with her ex-boyfriend Trujillo and Diaz.Corral said Diaz was a long-time employee at Kentucky Fried Chicken on 3rd Street in Chula Vista. She worked hard to provide for her 16-year-old son.Trujillo's family said he worked at the Tijuana Town Hall. He leaves behind three children."We just want justice," Corral said. This is typically one of the most exciting times of the year, with high school football getting close to kicking off the season.Unfortunately, COVID-19 sidelined football and a bunch of other sports."It's a concern," says Caledonia, Michigan, clinical psychologist Dr. Nicole Beurkens, "because surveys throughout this pandemic have shown that student-athletes, in particular, are showing rates of anxiety and depression that are steadily increasing and rates of physical activity that are decreasing."It's a combination that Dr. Beurkens says can cause some serious problems."People often underestimate how connected those two things are," she says, "But the research shows us over and over again that getting some form of physical movement, physical activity, or exercise in on a daily basis is critical for supporting our mental health, and that's especially true for children and for teens."So, with many sports in a timeout, Dr. Beurkens says parents should be looking for signs of mental health issues."I think that if parents start to notice that their child is withdrawing more and more, not participating in things that they used to participate in, withdrawing more from the family, getting a lot more irritable, maybe feeling more anxious about things, expressing more hesitation to do things that they were comfortable doing, those are signs that anxiety or depression may be an issue."She says keeping your kids active during this time is invaluable."For kids still to be involved in physical activities around weight training practice, many of the schools are working on how to safely have kids together to continue to participate in drill training, in working on things that they work during the season, even though they won't be competing. That's a great way to provide not only structure but also those relational kinds of opportunities."And above all else, Dr. Beurkens says, keep talking."Open communication is one of the things that really helps kids to work through this types of challenging situations.
